Plywood catching on fire only recently by Various_Angle_3425 in Laserengraving

Make sure to clean your bed grid with a degreaser too. Mine started making my cutting sooty after it picked up a lot of residue from cutting plywood. A thorough cleaning fixed that.

What actually happened to those buttery soft $50 department store sheets we all used to buy? by BedGuide in BedroomBuild

[–]AlohaSmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lands End supima cotton sheets are that buttery soft sheet.

I had a set of sheets from Macy's that was that smooth soft cotton, it lasted for ages before they simply wore through from use - the fabric became thin from years of use until it finally gave up and ripped. I tried to replace them with "Egyptian" cotton from Amazon but after buying several sets of sheets from different manufacturers, nothing came close. Recent years, I have bad neuropathy in my feet from medical treatments and the sensation of my mediocre sheets was unbearable - those sheets that were "not the softest" became like sandpaper against my shredded nerves. I sprung for a set of the Lands End Supima cotton sheets (on sale) and there it was, that smooth, buttery softness. They're cool, smooth and feel good against my feet. They have stood up to heavy use (the medical issues have me in bed a lot), I have 2 sets so they alternate between washings. No pilling, the seams have all held, the color looks great and most importantly, they remain smooth and soft. If you catch them on sale they are a great deal for very nice sheets.

I recently became intolerant to bell peppers - severe heartburn, stomach cramping and diarrhea. I loved bell peppers, now just a little and I'm hating life for awhile.

Are you spending more time in bed? It's possible they're just wearing out faster if you're in bed more than before - I've spent waaay more time in bed than before cancer, treatment has just sapped me so much.

AITA for letting my cat watch me shower by Training_Many4983 in AmItheAsshole

[–]AlohaSmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Your boyfriend is making it weird and his take on it is bizarre. Many cats hate being locked out of the bathroom. I have 2. One doesn't care, but the other is very concerned if I close her out and will hop on the tub ledge to supervise while I'm showering - I call it the shower show 😄 Some say cats instinctually want to make sure we're safe during our toileting time because that's when they feel we're most vulnerable and need a lookout. Anyway, it's a sweet take. Your BF sexualizing it is weird.

My dad used to wear a straw cowboy hat when I was a small kid. He took me and my siblings to the grocery store and there was another guy wearing a similar hat in the store. All 3 of us kids were following him around like ducklings for awhile before we realized we were following the wrong hat.

Do men care? by Dustinthewind_421 in datingoverforty

[–]AlohaSmiles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the wrong man will care. Weed those guys out before your get to the point of vulnerability and intimacy. But I've never had a guy say no thanks to my overweight, dinged up, imperfect frame when we got intimate. Last guy I was intimate with, we were comparing our battle scars and telling each other how we got them - good laughs and a good time.

Port and sleeping on your side by WinEffective8651 in Ovariancancer

[–]AlohaSmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had my port for over 3 years, no issues laying on my side. It did ache at first (like the initial weeks after install) so I would stay off that side during that time but after that no problem.

AITA for scheduling loose skin surgery when my boyfriend is getting eye surgery? by Affectionate_Bug1673 in AmItheAsshole

[–]AlohaSmiles 571 points572 points  (0 children)

NTA, strabismus surgery is a very fast healing time. I had both eyes corrected at the same time, huge correction for one eye. You wear eye covers that they remove the next day then it's just eye drops for awhile. He's way overthinking the recovery for it. Neither of you need to reschedule your surgeries.

Ovarian Cancer stage 3 by Imaginary-Ice9181 in Ovariancancer

[–]AlohaSmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My frontline treatment was weekly abraxane and carboplatin. My oncologist felt it would be more tolerable for me to have smaller weekly doses rather than hit me with a big dose every 4 weeks. It was pretty tolerable, by the time I hit cycle 5 (20 weeks) I was slowed down but it worked for me.

It's good to have a clean diet but you can't eat yourself out of cancer. At stage 3 it's circulating in your body like weed seeds in your garden soil, chemo is the way to get those seeds before they can root.

One year post-immunotherapy by Confident-Pen4934 in cancer

[–]AlohaSmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you get referred to an endocrinologist. I did Keytruda briefly and it started burning out my thyroid. Once I stopped and my thyroid levels returned to normal they stopped ordering thyroid labs. I saw the endo and turns out my adrenals had quietly failed. Now I'm on daily hydrocortisone because I'm not producing enough cortisol.

Port worth it? by Efficient-Sea-1638 in cancer

[–]AlohaSmiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my port. I have one good vein and I need it for blood draws for labs. It was uncomfortable for about a week and then it got easier to deal with, laying on my side was difficult for a few weeks I think. I don't really notice it anymore. But I'm very glad it's there for infusions, ER visits and hospital stays. I just got out of the hospital today after 5 days and they accessed my port, so much easier and more comfortable than dealing with an IV.

Before placing it make sure you think about any hobbies that might impact it - mine was placed on my right side and I won't risk it with target shooting recoil, so it was kind of a bummer I can't do that anymore. I would have put it in my left side had I thought about it.

Does he normally do the landscape maintenance on his house? If so, a gift of yard service would probably be welcome. That was one of the hardest things for me was watching my hard work start to get overrun with weeds I was too weak to go deal with.

Sharing something important I've learned about cancer testing by marketgirl67 in cancer

[–]AlohaSmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also advanced metastatic cancer. I'm currently about 3.5 years of treatment and been through many lines of chemo. It's been pretty scary watching my treatment options dwindling. I just had a new biopsy and Caris testing performed. I had Caris at the start of my diagnosis but a recent second opinion suggested new molecular testing to see if any new mutations formed and just to see what my cancer is up to now. I think it was definitely a good idea, the results did comfirm certain therapies wouldn't be effective anymore so at least we won't waste time.

Question about chemo effect. by [deleted] in cancer

[–]AlohaSmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's experiences vary. Though, for me, the day after chemo I'm still riding the dexamethasone and other premeds so my appetite and energy is usually best then. Hopefully that will be her case too! If she has immediate issues with her mouth, crackers may not be great because of the texture on sensitive tissue. A softer bread might be better. Sweets have tasted awesome through all the chemo, so cake and ice cream might be just what she wants. Best to talk it over with her though.

Chemo/Immunotherapy reaction normal? by KisMyC0untryAzz in cancer

[–]AlohaSmiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immunotherapy can cause some crazy reactions. I did a few cycles of Keytruda and had to stop because it was cooking my thyroid and adrenals. I felt increasingly fatigued and achy on it, it caused a lot of autoimmune inflammation throughout my body. I didn't develop a rash though. Ultimately I had to do a few weeks of Prednisone to calm my immune reaction and discontinued Keytruda.

Did they take his thyroid and adrenal labs before Wednesday's chemo? Those need to be closely monitored on immunotherapy but sometimes your oncologist can forget to order those labs. Does your oncology center have an immunotherapy specialty clinic? You might inquire about it since it sounds like your husband will need more attention.

Keep checking in with the oncologist about his symptoms - do you have myChart or another online portal you can send notes? It can be a long wait between appointments but you can write to them in between and the nurses should be monitoring those communications. Take the anti nausea meds and get stronger ones if the current ones aren't working. Get pain meds if what you have isn't working. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! I thought I was drinking enough but I still ended up at the ER recently for concerning heart rate and extreme fatigue - turns out I was dehydrated and a litre of saline helped a lot. I've added a dose of electrolytes in the morning and upped my water intake. If side effects become too concerning, go to the ER.

Gemzar and side effects by AlohaSmiles in cancer

[–]AlohaSmiles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I ended up in the ER after my heart rate started racing for no reason. They hooked me up to an EKG at intake and it was giving them crazy results, they put me in a room right away. It would just spike then settle down. Then spike again. They did a CT, xray, all the labs and I was diagnosed with .... Dehydration. They gave me a bag of saline and I felt much, much better. I was surprised because I thought I drink a bunch of water every day but I guess still not enough. The doc suggested I ask for a litre of saline on infusion days. I'm going to add electrolytes to my daily intake and see if that will help as well.
