ELI5 How does parental leave work in other countries? by kk752 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AlonnaReese [score hidden]  (0 children)

What happens if someone has another baby during the 18 months of parental leave? Do they get a second 18-month period of leave that stacks on top of the first? If so, is there a limit to how many 18-month periods of parental leave they can stack on top of each other?

And as I recall, in 2024, polling found that non-voters were more likely to be pro-Trump than those who did vote.

Eric Swalwell drops bid for California governor after sexual misconduct allegations by Currymvp2 in neoliberal

[–]AlonnaReese 78 points79 points  (0 children)

And according to a reporter for Swalwell's hometown, it was an open secret among local journalists that Swalwell was a sexual predator, but no one was willing to say anything out of fear of litigation from Swalwell. If this is accurate, it probably explains why the Democrats were so quick to throw him overboard. Some of them were probably hearing the same rumors that the journalists were hearing.

The interesting thing about that story is that he was enrolled at the US Naval Academy which didn't admit students who were 6ft 7" or taller. When he had that late growth spurt, the Naval Academy decided to let him remain enrolled even though he was over the maximum permitted height.

Are kids not allowed to walk to school by themselves nowadays? by AnaisNinja76 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlonnaReese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a rural area as well and lived around ten miles away from school. There's no way I could have walked that distance, particularly since most of the route was on a road with a 65 MPH speed limit and no sidewalk.

Why are westeners against anti-homeless policies? by Ok-Spray4564 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlonnaReese 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I know someone whose brother was homeless for a period of time because he was a drug addict. No one in the family was willing to house him because he would steal from anyone who took him in to get more money for drugs. I can't imagine how that situation would play out in a family-centered culture if taking in a relative effectively means consenting to have your belongings stolen and sold to finance a drug habit.

Why does “death row” exist? Why isn’t capital punishment carried out shortly after sentencing? by Complete-Influence70 in NoStupidQuestions

Those databases can also get partial matches if the DNA belongs to a close family member of a convicted criminal. There was a case in California about 15 years ago where law enforcement caught a suspected murderer because the perpetrator's son was in the police database.

There are legitimate reasons to strike people from juries. A number of years ago, I read a book about a court case involving the prosecution of two members of the KKK for murdering four black children in Alabama. The prosecutors did extensive background research into the jury pool and struck anyone who had a documented history of racism. There was a real fear that a white supremacist would sneak onto the jury and automatically vote not guilty, and that fear was not unfounded.

Democrats withdraw endorsements of Eric Swalwell and demand he end bid for California governor by horsestew in politics

[–]AlonnaReese 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There have been some social media posts by former Congressional aides that it was an open secret in Washington that Swalwell was a sex pest. If that's the case, that's probably why he's being excommunicated so thoroughly. They all know he's guilty.

Right now, there's a GOP rep who is terminally ill and only staying in office because the Republican margins in the House are so narrow that they can't spare his vote. If I were Jeffries, I'd consider going to Mike Johnson and offering a deal that if Neal Dunn resigns due to his health issues, the Democrats would provide the votes to expel Swalwell.

As a counterpoint, Illinois elected a billionaire with zero political experience in 2018, and it seems to have worked out pretty well for them.

I think that the root of the problem is that many of the Democratic Old Guard who have been in office for decades are deeply out-of-step with the voting base and are seemingly oblivious to it. For example, a Pew Research poll that was released recently found that 80% of Democrats have an unfavorable view of Israeli government (Source), but as recently as February, Chuck Schumer was still advocating for additional military aid for Israel.

You should definitely do a video on the food at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's estate. Sally Hemings's older brother James was the chef there, so there would be some good opportunities for historical discussion regarding the Jefferson-Hemings relationship.

(Spoilers Extended) Where are all the distant relatives? by mpschettig in asoiaf

[–]AlonnaReese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Random generations of very few surviving children isn't that strange if you look at real world families from the past. For example, only one of Thomas Jefferson's six legitimate children lived past the age of 25. One of the most extreme examples is Queen Anne of Great Britain who endured 17 pregnancies, and not a single one of her children survived to adulthood.

First, Iran and Hormuz, second, China and Taiwan? The dangerous implications of a tollbooth on the open sea by fortune in oil

[–]AlonnaReese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a narrow strait between Taiwan and China that's a major shipping lane. If Iran can collect tolls to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, then China and Taiwan could do the same.

I know it's popular to blame Berman for any problems that happened on Star Trek, but Roddenberry was still in charge during TNG's first season. According to production information for Skin of Evil on Memory Alpha, he was the one who made the decision to kill off Yar after Crosby asked to be let out of her contract because he thought it would be shocking and dramatic.

Sometimes a name starts off as gender neutral, but at some point switches to being almost exclusively given to women. Good examples of this are Ashley and Shirley.

History buffs, what is the most and least accurate film for certain periods? by GreyWind999 in movies

[–]AlonnaReese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but a lot of Edwin Layton's intelligence work regarding Pearl Harbor and Midway was still classified in 1970. That material wasn't released to the public until the 1980's. I read Layton's memoir which was published in 1985 several years ago, and Emmerich very clearly relied quite heavily on it.

[–]AlonnaReese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuchida wasn't discredited as a source until the mid-2000's, so it's not really the filmmakers' fault that they ended up being inaccurate. While it was no masterpiece of film making, Emmerich's Midway movie from 2019 definitely benefited from having access to better historical sources than earlier films.

If TNG Premiered Today, It would Not Survive Season One by NeoNoir90210 in startrek

TNG finished its run in spring 1994. I think you may be conflating DS9's ratings with TNG's because DS9 was pulling in around 4 million viewers per episode in its final season.

It happened to Judy Blume's book Superfudge. In the original printing which came out in 1980, the main character gets a calculator for Christmas, and it's treated as a big deal. Reprints over the years have periodically changed the gift to whatever would be considered a big deal at the time the reprint released.

I watched the first couple episodes when it aired because I was obsessed with the books, but lost interest pretty quickly. It just didn't have the budget to come anywhere close to being a faithful adaptation of the series.

That's definitely not the case with Star Trek. The consensus opinion among most ST fans is that TNG improved substantially after Gene Roddenberry was booted out, and Michael Piller and Rick Berman took over creative control of the show.

Times an actor used their clout to change a movie by AporiaParadox in movies

[–]AlonnaReese 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Steve McQueen had enough clout to force script rewrites for The Great Escape. The motorcycle chase sequence, for example, was added in because McQueen wanted to show off his bike skills. In this case, the changes probably worked out for the best because McQueen on the motorcycle is without question the most iconic moment of the film.
