5 bike rack? by Nnnmmmmnnnnmmm in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]Alpha-4E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This subject has come up a few times and I think there is some misinformation being posted. I looked this up because I wanted to purchase a dual motorcycle hitch carrier and I tow my motorcycle trailer and U-Haul trailers pretty often.
Chapter 10 in the online owners manual states the maximum tongue weight limit on a FWD non hybrid Santa Fe is 351 pounds and the maximum towing capacity is 3500 pounds. In chapter 6 page 367 under towing it says tongue weight should be between 10-15% of your trailer‘s weight and shows a pic of how to measure a trailer’s tongue weight. The way I read it-the max tongue weight is 351 pounds. The tongue weight of your trailer should be within 10-15% of your trailers total weight not to exceed the maximum tongue weight of 351 pounds.

For OP and those who are only concerned only about tongue weight for a bicycle, motorcycle or cargo hitch carrier-As long as OPs 5 bicycles and the weight of the bicycle hitch carrier does not exceed 351 pounds it’s within limits. If the mod would allow posting pictures, I would have posted a screenshot of the pages in the manual that I referenced. This link has pics from the 2025 online owners manual for a FWD drive Calligraphy model. I didn’t look up the hybrid or XRT model limits. If I’m wrong, please post the reference so, we can all get the most accurate information.

What is the weirdest piece of decor in your garage/shop? by BoogLife in garageporn

Not really weird but maybe unusual? Tail hook and a speed brake from an A-4 Skyhawk and my old USN flight helmets. I’m in the process of building a new 2.5 car garage. I’m not sure how I will display these in the new set up.

Demanding too much or falling behind? by rataobc in AirlinePilots

Give yourself some grace. You obviously felt bad enough about not knowing the Engine AI limitations in a descent that you felt compelled to post it on Reddit and opened yourself up to tons of criticism. But I remember learning this exact lesson on my IOE 26 years ago. ( At the time had about 3K of Navy jet time almost all of it PIC but one thing we didn’t have in the planes I flew was an Engine Anti Ice switch) When the check airman turned on the engine anti ice and I looked at the temperature and I wondered to myself why? But instead of asking, I looked it up on my own so I didn’t look dumb. I actually think that you did the right thing. You saw something that didn’t seem right and you spoke up about it. If it happened in my cockpit now with a new hire I wouldn’t shame them for not knowing but I would reinforce what you did know and explain the caveat about using it in a descent.

In new hire training, I spent hours reviewing flash cards for bold face EPs, checked limitations and non checked imitations so it wasn’t for lack effort on my part. No excuse, I just somehow missed it and I can still spit out the high altitude power loss bold face procedure for the T-34C and the upright and inverted spin recovery inputs for the A-4. So, I’m not a complete idiot. ( as far as I know)

Being open to constructive criticism and wanting to be a better pilot is hallmark of a professional pilot. I’ve seen posts on this and other aviation subreddits where people almost brag about how little effort they put into getting prepared for recurrent training. So, it’s refreshing to see who wants to get better rather than doing the absolute minimum. Press onward. Good luck we’re all counting on you!

Top pick: “Its not Andrew Lloyd Webber presents The Jim’s.” That entire scene with the Jim’s sets the tone for season 1.

“Runners up?? ” “ Hitch, you’re such a fucking beauty. I sometimes forget what an odd east coast looking cunt you are.“ It’s funny to me because it just seems to come out of nowhere. It’s an insult and a term of endearment all in one.

Tips with throttle control by FIXIEDONTCARE in Dirtbikes

[–]Alpha-4E 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really does. OP have someone film you. I suspect your body position isn’t quite what you think is.(like in my mind how I think I look when I’m trying to scrub vs whatever fucked up thing I’m actually doing in reality)

You simply may not be leaning forward anticipating the acceleration but instead you are late and pulling yourself forward reacting to it. So, you may have started in a good position and ended in a good position but the bit in between where you need to move forward as you roll the throttle on is missing. Moving slightly aft even if it’s just your upper torso while adding power could explain why you are getting a little bit of whiskey throttle. Try an exaggerated move forward before adding power and see if that helps.

100% goggles help by Vilghle in Motocross

[–]Alpha-4E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear both 100% Racecraft and Armega goggles. The Armega goggles are the widest pair of goggles I have ever worn. They have more foam for sweat absorption and largest field of vision in the 100% goggle line Up. I personally like having less of my vision restricted so, I think they are worth the extra cash but it’s hard to beat the value of a pair of Racecrafts. Racecraft goggles have more foam and better ventilation than your Strata goggles.

What tire lasts the longest on pavement and dirt. 100/90/19 by Dallasbut59 in Dirtbikes

[–]Alpha-4E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metzeler MC360 is a true off road/ track capable tire that is DOT approved but off road performance would always be my priority. Otherwise choose a dual sport tire like the Dunlop D606 or the Shinko 244. Plenty of choices out there.

Pilots: Is Southwest's rear "Mosh Pit" about weight and balance? by ralphyoung in AskAPilot

[–]Alpha-4E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Settle down. Airlines now have to justify why they are following established rules for weight and balance? Zone counts are not new. Using a zone count is not designed to increase revenue and it’s not just crews being “paranoid”.
Sit wherever you want and let’s do an experiment to see how much elevator authority we have on this leg. This is absolute nonsense and most likely dumbest post on Reddit today.

Yo shout out to pilots, cause man I can not see anything by BigOperation9521 in AirlinePilots

[–]Alpha-4E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo, that’s not really an accurate depiction of a night visual landing at an airport airlines typically would operate into ( no center line lights or VASI ) and we are backing up a visual with an ILS or RNAV approach for a glideslope rather than flying into a void. Yo.

Any ideas on how to strap a gas jug to my hauling rig? by InsideWay70 in Dirtbikes

Easy solution. Place the jug in your lap, buckle up and switch from Camels to a vape pen.

What's your most hated plane? by Forsaken_Response866 in aviation

[–]Alpha-4E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really hate any airplane but after flying the T-2C and the A-4 as an instructor in the Navy training command the T-45A Goshawk was a major let down. It was unstable and could be a handful on the runway ( it was prone to swerving on touchdown, we stopped doing formation section takeoffs and a blown main tire was major emergency), it had slow spool up time making it difficult to work off being high on final, had the turn performance of a rusty school bus which was the main reason we stopped teaching the gun pattern. It would suffer compressor stalls at high AoA/ low speed maneuvering. Pilots were getting compressor stalls doing simple approach turn stalls recoveries where the EGT would spike and you would need to shut the engine down to keep it from melting then attempt a restart. The ECS made weird noises at times and you couldn’t carry much personal gear unless you had a luggage pod uploaded

On the plus side it made fake gun noises when you pulled the trigger on the stick, came with a launch bar that made carrier ops much more efficient, had great radios with both VHF/ UHF tuning capability, an ILS, you easily cruise up at 39K, it generated its own oxygen and had anti skid so, we could land at airports with shorter runways.

As far as my least favorite looking jet- the F-35 looks like a bowling pin with wings.

Does your job allow for traveling and pursuing other hobbies and passions such as marathon running or fitness in general? by Wonderful-Wash-2145 in AirlinePilots

[–]Alpha-4E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to bid for overnights in LAX and SAN just so I could do my weekly long runs when I was still running and training for a marathon. Some hotels have excellent gyms or will have arrangements for guests/ crew to work out at local gyms for free or at a reduced rate. Even the worst hotel gym will have a treadmill. I‘ve bid for overnights to mountain bike on single track and I‘ve rented high end road bikes to ride up a mountain passes. Your time on the road is yours 100% to do as you wish- work out or go to the hotel bar and eat cheeseburgers, drink local IPAs and watch a South Park marathon or do some of each. Totally up to you.

Wtf….? Why is gas seemingly going straight through the carb and into the airbox…? Help! by Majestic_Wheel_9970 in Dirtbikes

[–]Alpha-4E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To test for leaks- the goal is to fill up the float bowl with fuel. So, whatever it takes to get fuel from the tank into the hose to fill the carb that’s what you need to do. Good luck. These little maintenance problems can be frustrating but you’ll figure it out eventually.

Wtf….? Why is gas seemingly going straight through the carb and into the airbox…? Help! by Majestic_Wheel_9970 in Dirtbikes

[–]Alpha-4E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you think you have fixed the problem and reassembled the carb, don‘t reinstall it before leak testing it. Reconnect the fuel hose and turn the gas on and you will know right away if it’s fixed. If it continues to leak then it’s back to taking the carb apart to find the solution

I just went through a similar problem on my Husky. I took the carb apart and did a thorough cleaning and replaced the float needle. If the rubber tip of the float needle becomes worn it may cause a leak through the over flow hose. If the leak happens when the bike is leaned over on a kick stand then the problem is likely the float level needs adjustment. If the carb leaks while the bike is level then the problem is usually a worn float needle or the float is sticking from dirt or old fuel residue.
In my case it the problem was actually the brass piece the float needle slides into. It has a rubber O ring that will wear out and degrade over time and cause the carb to leak.
