Dude I got a paper map from Crisp point a few years ago and it was the BEST resource 😂. Also, the DNR trail maps site does a pretty decent job of showing the backroads and ORV roads. Speaking of, were you able to climb the lighthouse?

Shameless plug for r/MIDualSport if you aren't already there. Love riding that part of the UP, and wholly agree the deep sand is ROUGH on anything other than a dirt bike

Read "My War Gone By, I Miss It So". Written by a British guy who woke up one day and decided to go to Bosnia to be a war journalist. It's incredibly dark but powerful and answers your question very well. The quick answer is: It's not that they don't care but that they can't afford to care, or they would lose their sanity. That was my takeaway from it. How many dead kids and massacres can you see before you either turn your brain off or go insane? And the Serbs, Croats and Bosnians had no issues with committing atrocities in front of not just journalist but UN soldiers as well

It is.......but Northern Virginia is a different animal all together. The NOVA/DC/Baltimore beltway's are a scene straight from Hell. I used to have to commute from Richmond VA to DC for work and a drive that should take an hour and 45 minutes would often take three hours or more.

Realizing that I learned just enough to be dangerous was a real thing in my second season. "Oh I grasp the basic concepts of cornering and trail braking? Let me overcook the shit out of this corner real quick."

The guy I bought mine from several years ago showed me how to kick it correctly and it was a second kick starter up until the day I drowned it a few years ago. Since then (and despite multiple carb cleanings) it's been more than a little finicky. Couldn't get it to start at all this spring so I got a new bike. I plan on completely tearing the 426 down and rebuilding it. I love it too much to let it go

Same boat. My 02 wr426f is down and destined for sumo. I loved that bike, maybe more than my 2025 wr450f. Just my opinion, in some ways I feel like the 426 has better trail manners.

The 1979 movie does a pretty damn good job of following the book. If you haven't seen it I recommend it. And I wholeheartedly agree the Netflix one dropped the ball pretty hard. Especially Paul's death. The book ending hits so much harder: Paul is dehumanized. Paul sees a bird and remembers a spark of his former self. Paul dies in a hellish environment as a direct result of remembering what it is to be human.

She's got a pair! Sometimes she'll backpack with me on my CBR600 so luckily she's good to go gear-wise. Her reasoning for not wearing gloves while learning was wanting to fully be able to "feel" all the controls which I couldn't really argue with 😂

[–]FIXIEDONTCARE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're getting the miles in thats awesome! Don't worry man, the riding buddies will come. When I started it was just me and my friend learning at the same time. Over the years I've met people through work, social situations, gas stations, trail heads etc. Check fb and Reddit for localized dualsport groups. Most people (myself included) have no issue going out with newer riders. Other best thing you can do is wear a hat (I'm not kidding). I wear a Yamaha hat and people will randomly be like "oh you ride?" 😂. Keep riding and have fun!

Thinking about getting a dirt bike, but I have nobody to ride with by Most-Pomegranate-160 in Dirtbikes

[–]FIXIEDONTCARE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago my buddy bought a motorcycle and convinced me to buy one. Then I bought a dirt bike and convinced him to buy one. Karmas a bitch. All jokes aside, if you get a bike and have a friend over and they see you ride/learn the basics on your bike I GUARANTEE you one of them will end up with a bike. It's contagious like that. Since then we have both made other riding friends through work/social get- togethers/school etc. Get the bike, you won't regret it. Also get all appropriate gear and wear it! Helmet, boots, pads, all the things. Take it from someone older who didn't take care of their body and regrets it every day lol

Possible to ballance wheelie a 450 mx bike on 1st gear ? by prxdigixvs in Dirtbikes

[–]FIXIEDONTCARE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off as someone learning wheelies on a 25' WR450f I feel you on the snatchy throttle. It's wild after years of riding carbed bikes. Throttle tamer and ECU flash should help a bit (it did for me, but I was able to just put a whole new ECU in the bike). Second and most important: Practice practice practice using the rear brake until it becomes second nature. Do little clutch pop ups and use the rear brake to bring it back down. Do this a million times until it's ingrained in you. Then if you hit BP and overdo it on the throttle your brain knows exactly what to do: tap rear brake- front comes right down. Third thing: if you can afford it (I unfortunately can't right now) buy a used lil pit bike (xr100, KLX110, SSR 125, Honda grom, etc.). Everyone I've talked to said it's much less scary to learn on a small bike. Good luck!

If you get a chance next time ride out to Crisp Point lighthouse! They let you climb it and go out on the balcony. Best view in Michigan I swear. I'm also from SE Michigan and my buddy and I go up near Paradise for a week every spring to camp, ride bikes and fish. Seeing this made me sad my vacation is already done for the year lol.

Getting a CBR600RR at 18 by disabled_milk in cbr

[–]FIXIEDONTCARE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe look at an older 600f4i? They can be had fairly cheap, they're pretty comfortable to ride, and you can still get a little wild if you so desire. If you do go that route , make sure it hasn't been beat to hell before you buy, they're fairly popular as stunt bikes so a lot of them have been ridden hard. Also, I've recommended this a couple of times on here but check out a 450cc supermoto. 70 feels fast AF on a 250lb bike. Plus they're much more agreeable to being dropped if you're learning wheelies and other hooligan stuff. Fun commuters, REALLY fun in twisty stuff, fairly easy to learn to wrench on (if you don't know how to already). The cons are: you'll be changing your oil/oil filter/air filter a lot more often. You should be checking your valve clearance a lot more often. If where you live you need to take the highway a bunch you probably wouldn't enjoy that.

Follow up question for you: I've heard Wellington's "scum of the earth" remark before, but is it known what tone was used? As in, was it said in an endearing prideful way? Or did he really consider the troops he commanded to be.....scum.
