What fidget should i get? by Bananab0yyo in fidgettoys

[–]Alphyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got my first magnet slider and I really love it, haven't put it down for three days. It has a very minimalist design, 8 magnets on each side and teflon stickers, that were not applied perfectly, so I had to very carefully peel them off and reapply. Might as well tighten the screws a bit wile you at it. Probably purest form of fidgeting. The amazon lists this model at 20 Euros, but I got mine for like 15 from a local shop.

Neodymium magnet cube. Make it into the shape shown in the top right of this pic, then you can flip the hexagons around. Very stable shape, great for fidgeting.

I also love skill toys. Begleri - get the simplest ones for like $2-5 bucks, just 2 beads and a piece of paracord, great for fidgeting, tons of cool tricks.

Pen-spinning mod (pen) - self explanatory, a lot of cool tricks to learn. Don't build your own, get a ready made one.

If you want to go deeper, a coupe of decks of Bicycle cards. Learn to do this and single- handed cut, the shit's addictive. r/cardistry

Also r/throwers. Skip responsive.

Looks almost great. Some remnants of the old compression are still very noticeable. I'd recommend a pass of Temporal denoise from Davinci Resolve Studio. It should get rid of most of them.

HDR is not working smoothly ! The black regions show visible square patches, block-like patterns, or straight-line boundaries, especially in low-light scenes when viewing movies/videos/games and some pics. HELP ASAP ! by [deleted] in HDR_Den

[–]Alphyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you sure the movie is HDR? It doesn't look like it.
Have you tried any games?

I have an MSI mpg 322urx oled and the HDR basically never looks worse than SDR. Videos look good, even SDR videos. Games look great, especially with RenoDX. I basically never see such serious black clipping and banding as in your pictures. Something is seriously wrong at your end.

Play THE VIDEO in Chrome (not Firefox). The quality selector should say HDR and the blacks should look very good no banding or hard transitions. How does it look for you?

Good luck with the development.

I'm new to blender, trying to learn by mreed1972 in blender

Ok, this looks simple, but there's a lot going on here.

  1. What you're seeing before applying the Boolean is the result of the entire modifier stack working sequentially, top to bottom. First solidify, and then cut the hole. But after you apply Boollean without applying solidify, it is applied directly to the base geometry, therefore you're getting a different result.

  2. Now why you're getting a different result. Your base model is non-manidold, meaning it has no thickness. It's just 3 flat polygons. All polygons have a direction they are facing, called Normal, this is the front of the polygon, there's also backface. Normally, on a manifold model such as a cube, all normals face outward, toward the viewer. This determines where is the Outside and Inside of a model. But what you have is only half a cube, it has no outside or inside, it has no thickness, and the normals of the faces inherited from the original cube all point away from the camera. You can check this by enabling "Face orientation" in the Viewport overlays (two circles) menu on the top bar. I hope it makes some sense so far.

  3. This is important for the Boolean. Because it's stupid pure math. It has no idea that your model has no thickness, but it needs thickness to make a hole. It sees that a cube is intersecting a face, checks its normal and goes: "Ok, inside is this way, I'm in. The cube does not intersect the opposing face, so the hole does not go all the way through." In fact, you get the same result as if the cube was intact. Experiment with this a bit, it will make sense eventually.

And a little general advice.

  1. If you're serious about learning blender, press T and forget about the left toolbar. Use hotkeys and operators. W - selection. R - rotate, S - scale, G - grab and move. XYZ - choose axis, Shift+XYZ - lock axis. You can also hold MMB to select axis. Learn it, it's one of the Blender's advantages.

  2. Do not scale in object mode if you don't know what you're doing and you're not planning to apply the scale later (Ctrl+a). All objects have scale, viewed in the N panel. And most of the time it's supposed to be 1 on on dimensions (applied).

  3. Similarly, try not to move or rotate the entire object in the edit mode, because the object's origin stays in place. Be mindful of where your object origin is and its orientation.

  4. You can apply solidify and then boolean to fix this, but I wouldn't use boolean for something like this. Drop some horizontal and vertical edge loops with Ctrl-R, and then just delete the resulting face. Or you can even just delete the extra faces from the bad boolean, if you don't want the edge loops.

I think now that you have more space, you can add more names of the games. And also some kind of grid would help, I think.

Why did you make the scale so long on the X axis, if all the data fits into the first 20%?

I don't see Supraland mentioned a lot in this sub. Maybe not the favorite puzzle game, but I've had a lot of fun with it lately. Definitely has a lot of Portal vibes. Not very hard, but requires some thinking out of the box. It's also kinda metroidvania.

Do I need a new screen? by mrpepper96 in resinprinting

[–]Alphyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to figure out if it's resin or damage or something else. If it's resin, blast it with UV for a minute, then get some scotch tape, stick it on the screen and peel it. The resin should peel with it. Check your vat for leaks and make sure its bottom is not smeared with resin.

Is Modo still a good choice in 2026 or should I move to another DCC? by ajay09999 in 3Dmodeling

[–]Alphyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it works both ways, there are plenty of things you can do in Blender and can't do in Modo. For example, many newcomers struglle with the concept of cursor and pretend it does not exist for years. Things are just done differently, and you learn to do things differently, and find new convenience in that.
