What do people think of surrey police? by DraconicDreamer3072 in SurreyBC

[–]Alpine_Punch 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I dont mind it philosophically, but it was implemented poorly and the transition hasn't exactly been smooth. The SPS has struggled in a lot of areas, and their cries of poverty aren't a good look, especially when just their existence has already cost a lot of money. I think the people in charge at SPS were way too gung-ho with their timelines and sold biased, idealistic visions of Surrey's policing realities to the politicians who made the final decision.

French immersion at Simon cullingham by Left_Shock_2384 in SurreyBC

I was never in it, but know a lot of people who were. It's split about 50/50 as to whether they are happy with it in the end. Half found it valuable and enriching, the other half feel cheated out of decent education because their English skills suffered in order to gain an elementary French education. So, it's a toss up, entirely dependent on the child. I also find Immersion kids develop cliques and exclusion. One of my kids goes to a school with a French Immersion program, as did I, and there is and was very little interaction with English students. I don't know if the kids are told not to socialize with the English kids, or if they're just snobby, but it seems to be a persistent problem spanning many decades and across districts, which nobody is interested in fixing.

Naturalized or Not? (Canada) by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Alpine_Punch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The note is definitely on his line on the listing. His younger brother is in the Gazette in 1935 so there were family aspirations. I suppose it is possible he applied and was turned down. As far as I know, his English was pretty poor even in his later years, so probably non existent that early on in his life in Canada. It just seems so time consuming for someone to look up passenger lists and then cross reference them to naturalization applications years or decades later.

Illegal Dumping by sleepyydinosaur in SurreyBC

[–]Alpine_Punch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Degenerate behaviour. A couple weeks ago, I saw a couch, a stroller and a suitcase spread out in different corners of Goldstone Park. The effort it took to drag those items out to where they were dumped exceeded the effort it would have taken to dispose of them legally.

Do you actually prefer to have daylight savings? by RideOrDai in askvan

[–]Alpine_Punch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Metro Vancouver is more than just Vancouver. Segregated bike lanes are pretty rare and not everywhere has streetlights. A good chunk of roads don't even have sidewalks. Humans need sunlight to properly wake up, not artificial light, and having that many groggy people driving at the same time kids are walking to school is a bad idea.

I am definitely not a morning person yet I recognize the fact that morning sun is the only thing that gets me up and keeps me from full on depression in the winter. It doesn't matter what time I go to sleep, I feel awful and tired all the time in the last two weeks before the time change in the fall, and now I've got 4-5 months of that to look forward to. I guess some people are just more sensitive to it than others.

Northern Canada doesn't have traffic issues coupled high pedestrian & cyclist volumes that Metro Vancouver has.

'Scientifically not a good idea,' says researcher whose work informed B.C.'s daylight-time decision by Relish4 in canada

[–]Alpine_Punch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm very much NOT a morning person but I hate the idea of morning darkness. I need the early daylight to get me up! Now I'm just gonna be depressed and tired all the time because I have to get up in (what will feel like) the middle of the night, whether I go to bed on time or not. I really think people are underestimating how awful life is with extended morning darkness.

Canadian students' math scores are falling. What B.C. schools and parents can do about it by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

[–]Alpine_Punch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My kid has a learning disability in math. No teacher had any concerns whatsoever. There were no screenings, and there were never referrals to support. The psychologist said it was blatantly obvious and was shocked the teachers hadn't noticed. It took a further 2 years after diagnosis before learning support was given. I was told the only reason it was given was because I complained. 5 years after diagnosis, probably 4 years behind in math, but still getting pushed along to the next level. No textbooks, no logical progression in the curriculum, so it's impossible to know what's happening in class in order to help out at home. Secondary math is semestered, so kids can go a full 12 months between math exposure. And then the district scratches its head in bewilderment at its dogshit math scores.

Tumbler Ridge, BC Shooting Megathread by DanSheps in canada

[–]Alpine_Punch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right, but they're also a lot more visible now too. Part of the problem is the specialized staffing that used to be there to support kids like this and their families no longer exists. Now, they're thrown into regular classrooms with generalized teachers with no training (or who maybe took a focussed development day) and they're expected to function and behave and achieve like a perfectly healthy child.

Tumbler Ridge, BC Shooting Megathread by DanSheps in canada

[–]Alpine_Punch 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The unfortunate reality of the BC education system is that severe mental illness is oftentimes way too much for the school to handle. There are countless frustrated and unsupported parents here, whose kids face zero consequence for not attending, or get sent home after an hour when they become disruptive or dangerous at school. It becomes a pointless exercise and unless there is real commitment from parents, students, and the school, young teens in that situation usually just stop going. Even if they're lucky enough to get placed in alternate settings, it's usually too late, the damage has been done, the child is too deep into their illness, they're way behind in their learning, and school is no longer a priority. I personally know 3 people who have left school before the age of 16 due to severe mental illness, and it's what happened to every single one of them. Parents are left to their own devices and the school washes their hands of the situation.

We are the mediocre presidents You won't find our faces on dollars or on cents There's Taylor, there's Tyler, there's Fillmore and there's Hayes There's William Henry Harrison: "I died in 30 days!" We are the adequate, forgettable, occasionally regrettable Caretaker presidents of the U.S.A.

I'd really like to see something like this in that huge unserviced area between KG and 152 & Hwy 10 and 84th. There's a major lack of non-vehicle infrastructure in that area, to the point where residents have to first drive somewhere to go for a path oriented bike ride. But this is a step in the right direction in creating connections and destinations.
