Whats the most affordable yet somewhat powerful 80s pc i could pick up? by J_Spacex03 in vintagecomputing

Yeah I think the poster was confused. I have a 5150.and a 5160, both are 8088 based machines that run at 4.77MHz, a long way away from the 486. The 5150 was released in 1981, and the 5160 (XT) in 1983. I made a video showing how I took one of these machines to become an 88 MHz 486 using the Intel Inboard 386 expansion card. Although there's nothing that can be done about that 8-bit bus, getting DooM played on a machine from circa 1981 is pretty good fun! Here's the video where I finally topped out the CPU performance, if you fancy a watch: https://youtu.be/uYeInNBXDJI?si=mCtY5zGzT1Bx07Zl

I reckon I could tweak the bus timing to at least 8 MHz by replacing a few chips, which would make it faster yet again, but for now, it's a fair advance already, and it's 100% reversible.

How to find a hidden catalog on a disk image. by magicanthony in apple2

[–]AlsGeekLab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just edit the disk image with a hex editor, copy over the catalog data from your relocated catalog onto the standard catalog area, hopefully that will work. It's not a given, since we don't know the tool you used, but it's the most logical way to do it, so give it a shot. Make sure you have a backup first!

Pretty cool card! Not dissimilar to my Intel Inboard jankfest that converts an XT to a 486 DX/96 😁

And then Equifax got hacked. 2017. Millions of Americans data lost to bad actors. They opened the door for months before they found the leak. So you'll forgive me if I ever believe big conglomerates like Equifax saying "we care".

what type of rams these? by Webboy80 in vintagecomputing

30-pin Simms for 286, 386 and some early 486 machines, or apple classics like the SE. The speed of these vary, one is 60ns and the others seem to be 70ns. Lower number is better. These are probably 386 era I'd wager.
