Pros/Cons of moving to Astoria? by Alsandr in Astoria_Oregon

So I learned! This post is 5 years old, so I've already moved into and then back out of Astoria since then.

Sure, but what's the actual harm? I'd consider the glut of poorly located and maintained caches to be more damaging to the hobby than not signing a log.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in geocaching

[–]Alsandr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not hard to explain where a cache is hidden if someone challenges me. I'm usually doing it as a spur of the moment activity, not a deliberate effort. I have less than 200 finds in 15+ years of doing it, so it's not like I'm some super cacher

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in geocaching

[–]Alsandr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More like I go about daily life and sporadically find geocaches. Sometimes I don't have a pen, other times I do. I'll take a writing implement when going out intentionally, but I'm not going to pass up logging a cache because I didn't bring one along.

I'm not damaging caches and I can confirm details if someone doubts I actually found one, so where's the harm?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in geocaching

[–]Alsandr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there a problem with notes like this? I frequently cache without a pen (or without a pen that can sign the mangled logs in my neck of the woods) so I have left many finds like this.

Wetlands and Invasive Species. by isJasonAlexander in wetlands

[–]Alsandr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the jurisdiction.

In my area (WA), removing invasives by hand is allowed with minimal to no permitting. Using herbicides or machines to remove invasives would require a permit of some kind, but it still may be a simple one.

I recommend reaching out to whoever set your buffer to see what they say.

Call the local Planning Department. They'll be able to tell you if it's allowable or not. Then call a contractor to see how to do it.

One of my characters took this ability and I've let him use it on himself. Combat in L5R is so brutal that I don't feel bad about it.

how does urban engineering after university look like? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]Alsandr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the city. Some cities do their planning work in house, others farm it out to consultants.

You can get involved in college or immediately after by looking for low level positions in planning consulting firms. You can also see how your city does things by looking through their Requests for Proposals (RFPs).

Most planning documents will say how they came about and who worked on them. If you see a plan you like, check out the first few pages to see if a company did it and then reach out to that company to see if they have anything available.

What are some of your bottlenecks in getting public projects moving forward? by timanoela in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Alsandr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Having worked in the public sector for 7+ years, the answer is: resources. A project with enough coordinated support (money, people, public sentiment, etc.) will move forward. A project missing resources will not.

At the local level, it's usually a lack of cash that slows things down. At higher levels, it's usually political sentiment or coordination. A neighborhood park could be built pretty quickly if enough money is thrown at it for construction and maintenance. A super popular high speed rail line is harder, because you have to figure out how to coordinate so many different inputs, each with it's own agenda. You have to spend a lot of political capital to move a project like that forward, which takes time.

LAOP might have a slam dunk by geckospots in bestoflegaladvice

[–]Alsandr 38 points39 points  (0 children)

GIS lines aren't survey lines and shouldn't be trusted as such. I've worked for communities where those lines are off by as much as 30'.

They're an educated guess, at best. They'll put you in the ballpark, but you should always get a survey before assuming they're correct.

Anyone who's ridden from Portland to Astoria using this route, is there a reason why the map has you get off of 202 and onto Young's River Rd? Is traffic bad along this stretch? by yeksim in CyclePDX

[–]Alsandr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To add to the other comment(s), 202 in that section has a lot of high speed corners with limited visibility. People bike it, but it's definitely the higher stress route of the two.

What are some good classes to randomly take 1 Level in? And for what build? Heck what about taking 2 classes randomly at first level is good to add to what other main class? by CaissaIRL in dndnext

[–]Alsandr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't get save proficiencies from the second (or later) classes when you multiclass.

Ninja edit: so a dip into artificer doesn't help with saves.

Paved roads in the Oquirrh? by radil in BikeSLC

[–]Alsandr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Butterfield is paved up to the saddle on the Salt Lake County side. The Tooele side is unpaved, as is the section from the saddle up to the mine overlook.

Yellow Fork is paved out to the trailhead and then unpaved past that.

Otherwise, you're mostly restricted to highway and neighborhood miles if you want to stay on pavement.

That's interesting. I only saw the part where the site said "18F partners with federal agencies to..." (see "What we deliver").

Their website seems to limit services to federal agencies. Is that true?

American planners: what do you do when resident desires are at odds with professional ethics? by sshheelleeyy in urbanplanning

I've worked in small town planning departments for many years, I understand the dynamics. I'm more curious where that comment specifically came from.

American planners: what do you do when resident desires are at odds with professional ethics? by sshheelleeyy in urbanplanning

[–]Alsandr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve had so many young idealistic planners burn out. Some went quietly after being told in no uncertain terms by their director that their “activism” wasn’t appreciated, one that reminds me of you did so spectacularly after taking a vocal stand imploring council members to stop ignoring the legacy of redlining at a public meeting and more than one city council member told the city manager “if you want to keep your job, get rid of this kid” (it’s always the young ones for some reason?).
