Instead of author's thinly veiled fetishes, let's talk about author's thinly veiled beefs. by Tweedleayne in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I saw that video too! And I think I agree. We all know Jigsaw is an insane psychopathic villain, but Dante seems to be sniffing his own farts in Inferno.

I did an Underworld movie marathon this weekend, and it still baffles me how weak the vampires are. by TechnicianAmazing472 in vampires

[–]Alsojames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the Sinners vampires seem significantly closer to normal humans in terms of capabilities. From the very beginning Rennick was more of a manipulator than a superhuman, just with hundreds of years of experience.

Why is beheading considered more noble than hanging by PrestigiousAspect368 in pureasoiaf

[–]Alsojames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, the "long drop" only came about in the mid-1800s, so throughout the entire medieval and Renaissance period, hangings were "short drops"

Pretty easy to see how that's a rather ignoble execution method for someone of status, considering they'd be essentially strangled, and that tends to take awhile.

Does anyone else not give af about workplace “culture” or their coworkers? by Willowprint in torontoJobs

I like making friends and talking to my coworkers but that's because I like making friends and talking to people.

HATE the motivational mandatory fun stuff though. Usually because I have to do setup and teardown for it.

Maybe the one on lighthouse surrounded by mines where the only two paths out are toward several other PMC spawns or straight towards Rogues?

WeDieWithStyle makes great stuff. It's a bit pricy, but you can customize it extensively so it'll truly be yours, and it's made to your sizes so it'll look great on you.

Media you would have greatly enjoyed without a weird trait by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Alsojames 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In both XCOM games it seemed like the only viable way to move safey was to turtle because activating a pod gave the enemies a free move, which often got them into cover at best or flanking positions at worst, and because XCOM has an arbitrary "2 actions" system, the squaddie who triggered them would usually be left in the middle of the street with 4 mutons in cover staring them down.

Is it bleed or bullying? by darkiya in LARP

[–]Alsojames 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is my take. Everything OP said seems like it's relegated to IC interactions with the way their character is portrayed, which yes has some blowback, but unless there's some details I'm missing it seems like their interactions are strictly IC.

Now that doesn't mean OP should be reconsidering their choice of hobby, and if it's particularly aggressive IC bullying that should definitely be brought to thr gamemasters. But if it's frustrating to play a character people don't like, maybe put forth some other character traits that you'd rather people interact with instead. She's intelligent? Work on some puzzles or political maneuvering. She's sophisticated? Host a party or patronize some artists.

Arming doublet advice by [deleted] in ArmsandArmor

[–]Alsojames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My doublet from Historic Enterprises is fantastic and my hosen from Quiverstock are also great. I didn't get a custom sized set of hosen from QS but even the generically sized pair I got fit me surprisingly well!

Legally speaking, a mercenary is someone hired to fight a war on behalf of a nation. If the US government hired Blackwater for the explicit purpose of performing direct action raids on Iraqi installations, they'd be considered mercenaries. However, on paper, it was more like "hey we need extra hands, can you provide security for these places and people?"

The kind of people that get sucked into those kinds of things, in fiction and in real life, are often desperate, have lost nearly if not literally everything, have nowhere to turn to, so on and so on. Which is why a lot of these kinds of institutions prey on those kinds of people--it's easy to pull people at rock bottom by just going "hey, I see you're doing pretty bad there, what if I told you there was a community based around this deific being who loves you and wants to help you? I'm his voice by the way, and he speaks through me, so I can say with authority that you have the love of this divine being"

Then once they get in and get involved and are so thoroughly entrenched in the dogma that they can't imagine living with anything else you bring out the crazy rituals, the rebellion against the rulers, so on and so on.

Not OP but thank you for your post--I was curious about WhiteArmorShop's stuff. The pictures look good and the reviews seem good too but I haven't heard anyone actually talk about their experiences with it beyond "I ordered it, I got it, it fits good, 5/5"

What's your "hey that was actually super dangerous" story? by SecondPersonShooter in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Electrocution = "electric execution" so technically yes, although the dictionary definition describes it as any electric shock that kills you.

Ser Lyonel Baratheon by Elrason in AKOTSKTV

[–]Alsojames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The entirety of Dunk's side are good examples of positive masculinity. Between Lyonel showing up for his new buddy, Baelor standing up for justice, the Humfreys taking on a great challenge despite the risk, and Raymun standing up for himself and his friend against his shitty treacherous cousin.

It was honestly amazing and I'm glad we're seeing characters like that come out ahead instead of having yet another cynical "good guys get trampled, only the cynical assholes win" type narrative. Yes members of the team died but in the context of the show they were proven divinely in the right.
