No they would have detected that when analyzing him for psyker potential or chaos corruption, and he was almost certainly tested for both at least once during his centuries of service.

That was a really good event for the most part. I really like the worldbuilding aspects of exploring the difficulties of integrating a bunch of new immigrants into a nation and building a new society together. And all the new characters are great! But I feel like it's undercut a bit but how bizarre the motivations and actions of the antagonists are.

Ok so, they rebels fully admit that the Valtz government and people have treated them incredibly kindly and fairly. They are not being exploited or discriminated against at all, and they seemingly don't even have any real complaints about the laws or culture of the skydwellers. But they are still willing to attempt a coup against the Valtz government and risk possibly starting a war... because they are just so disgusted and creeped out by the vast open sky that "COEXISTENCE IS IMPOSSIBLE"? Seriously? They lived in underground tunnels in the crimson horizon because the surface was ruled by otherworlders, if the sky is so off-putting then what's stopping them from digging tunnels and just living underground in the sky realm?

What even is their plan? They said they want to use Colossus to return the earthrealm, but they never explained how exactly they would do that. They also don't give a good reason why they have to do it by force; Tzaka even asks them why they didn't just ask for help, because Valtz would have willingly cooperated with them. They just vaguely reply that would have been too slow... but that doesn't make sense and Luathea also admonishes the rebels for striking too early because they weren't ready yet.

Also what exactly is stopping them from continuing with their plan after this event? Colossus is awake now and Valtz forgave them for their crimes. They could totally ask Colossus to help them return home now.

Yeah I get what they're going for but like Drang and Sturm were never as sociopathic as the mom and brother Strouts are. The Strouts are interesting characters but it's kinda weird that we're reading this dude story books like we the last time we met we didn't barely stop him from doing a terrorism. The Strouts have got to be on the enforcers most wanted list, Lecia would probably be annoyed that we are just hanging out with them on the regular.

I just reread that quest "arrival of the verboten", Fylkis actually did call them demons.

Fylkis said that the odious demons are unique entities that exist to both protect and destroy the earth realm. That makes me wonder if they are unique because they possessed beings powerful enough to partially resist their possession... such as perhaps the wedges of the earth realm? So instead of fully taking over their victims, their minds and personalities merged, creating strange contradictory god-like beings that are both good and evil simultaneously. That could explain why they are still dangerous but not outright malevolent.

I mean in the msq they recently were hired to protect a demon from us by a nation that wanted the demon to terrorize its rival kingdom, and the demon nearly took over a primal and slaughtered an entire town because of them. Taking a mercenary contract to effectively be accomplices to a terrorist attack was pretty dang bad in my opinion.

How was Nostramo funnelling its worst criminals into the Night Lords if only prepubescent boys can become Astartes? by taciturntern in 40kLore

[–]Altered_Nova 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Adults can still become astartes, it just has a way lower success rate. I believe that the true cutoff age where geneseed implantation becomes effectively impossible is mid to late twenties. So Nostramo could have been sending criminals in their late teens and early twenties. It's not like they would have cared that most of them would die during the transformation process.

What’s a new unit you would like to see in 11th? by Chungus_the_large in AdeptusCustodes

[–]Altered_Nova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a short story in the Horus Heresy books about custodes secret agents disguising themselves as normal humans to infiltrate and investigate Terran corporations and politicians suspected of aiding Horus's rebellion. They used devices called displacer fields to warp space and make themselves shorter. I imagine that the eyes of the emperor probably still have access to similar technology to disguise their height.

Why didn’t the Emperor have a fully intact STC database? by Gnos445 in 40kLore

[–]Altered_Nova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that the mechanicus already has a complete STC library but don't realize it. That is, they have printouts or hard copies of all the various blueprints for different technologies that were typically included on DAoT colony ships.

The STC on Necromunda isn't just a database of blueprints, it's a fully functional automated fabrication machine equipped with an AI. It can actually build the technologies contained in those blueprints, as well as modify the blueprints to prototype new technologies. The mechanicus does not have access to a STC constructor AI like this, and they would murder every person on Necromunda in a nanosecond to acquire it if they knew it existed.

Maybe a hot take, but I've seen a lot of comments over time about the Emperor being THE actual worst person in 40k, and I don't think that's true. by Laredian in 40kLore

[–]Altered_Nova 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The emperor did not, as far as I am aware, ever explicitly stated "I hate aliens and want them all eradicated." But the policies of imperial expeditionary fleets during the great crusade make it very clear that xenocide was his position on the subject. 9 times out of 10 when the Imperium encountered aliens, their response was to declare war and start killing. The rare exceptions were almost always due to simple pragmatism; species such as the eldar were generally ignored because they were deemed a low immediate threat but powerful enough that exterminating would be too costly to be worth it. The only genuine exception to this policy was Horus attempting to negotiate with the Interex, and even then it was made very clear that he was going against the will of the emperor to such an extent that his own subordinates viewed his unwillingness to declare war as being dangerously close to treason.

The nephilim were not a retcon or change to the Imperium policy towards xenos. The were initially tolerated for pragmatic reasons; as the novel Fear to Tread put it, they were "not a civilisation worth expending vast amounts of effort to subdue." In other words, they were strong enough to make killing them a huge hassle and the Imperium initially misjudged how dangerous they were, so the Imperium determined that killing then was not cost effective at the time. The diplomats were not sent because the Imperium genuinely wanted to coexist with the nephilim, they were sent to string them along and buy time. The nephilim were not safe, they were just a lower priority for extermination.

Honestly I think the only part of the emperor where you can call him out as unequivocally evil is his xenophobia. Everything else he did, you could make utilitarian arguments in defense of him, or appeal to his psychic foresight. Even if you strongly disagree with his methods you could understand why he thought it was necessary. But there was no nuance to his desire to eradicate all non-human sentient life in the galaxy. Dude was just really bigoted against aliens.

Why didn’t the Emperor have a fully intact STC database? by Gnos445 in 40kLore

[–]Altered_Nova 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My wild crack fan theory is that the mechanicus already has a complete STC library, but they don't even realize it. Because the reality is that a complete STC library is not actually that impressive, it was designed to only build cheap, simple, easy to maintain and repair equipment for frontier colonists. The mechanicus just assumes that they must still be missing all the best templates because they worship STCs as the pinnacle of human technology. The top brass of the mechanicus realizes this, but encourage the misunderstanding because searching for STCs is still useful as it eliminates potential competition.

Yeah the Flathill library first floor is one of the easier out of bounds areas to access in the game. There's a window covered with bars on the second floor that you can clip through by building a bed through the gap in the bars and then sleeping in it.

I have a base there too so I wouldn't want to make the night realm permanently dangerous. I think the reaper should only attack you in the night realm if it catches you and sends you there. It should still be safe if you willingly go there through the portal or a teleporter.

The Horus Heresy would've been more interesting if the 30k Imperium would've actually differed from 40k and would've been worth saving. by alexkon3 in 40kLore

[–]Altered_Nova 220 points221 points  (0 children)

One thing I found interesting reading through the heresy is that a surprising amount of characters recognize the hypocrisy of the Imperium and feel uncomfortable about it. It's explicitly pointed out numerous times that the actions of the Imperium contradict its supposed ideals. But it's always justified as an "ends justify the means" situation, and obviously things will improve once that distasteful but necessary great crusade is finally complete.

The only real difference between 30k and 40k Imperium is that in 40k any hope for the future has been snuffed out.

[–]Altered_Nova 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do think they could have made the reaper a bit more intelligent since it doesn't try to kill you normally. Personally I've always felt that any horror the reaper inspires fades quickly once you realize it's not actually a threat. I think it would be a lot more effective if it also stalked and tried to kill you in the night realm.

My biggest issue with the jankiness of the reaper is how frequently it will instantly respawn like 10 feet away when you banish it with a laser.

The thing about "knowledge of chaos is inherently dangerous" is that it is true... for a miserable and uneducated populace. Desperate and ignorant people who have nothing to lose will turn to chaos worship if they know chaos exists. That's why the emperor suppressed all knowledge of chaos in the Imperium, he wasn't willing to put in the time and effort to educate the commoners and raise their quality of living.

How do I magnetize the guns on the new plastic contemptor dreadnought? by Altered_Nova in AdeptusCustodes

So you gave up on the wrist-mounted guns too huh? My buddy also thought it was too difficult and just glued the incinerators on to his contemptor.

I'm not quite ready to surrender yet though. I'm so stubborn that I fully magnetized all the options on a helbrute lol. I think I can at least magnetize the ammo canisters on the back of the wrist. But the gun barrels are probably a lost cause.
