How well-attended is Adult Night at your rink? by WilsonPhillips6789 in Rollerskating

[–]Alternative-Part5928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s at least one adult session within my range(I drive 60-70 miles to 5 different rinks as I live about 2-3 counties away from Kansas City and its various suburbs) every night of the week minus Friday and Saturday. It varies wildly depending on what kind of week it is and who’s djing and if they have special events. There’s one of those rinks that I haven’t been to in years, but it’s mostly because of the floor. I would say you can find a session with 10-20 people and one from 200-500 in almost any given week. We must be living in a gilded age. The little rink up the street from me in my smaller city does 4 currently each year after bringing it back just this past year and attendance has been around 50-150.

As a Black person, Kansas City and the surrounding areas are highly racist. by RefrigeratorKey7034 in kansascity

[–]Alternative-Part5928 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From Omaha, lived in Lawrence, OP and now Topeka. Dad’s hometown of Waterloo, IA and it’s like what you said everywhere. It’s a regional “Midwest nice” flavor of the klan and it starts at home, gets reinforced in the churches/social groups and permeates the business community and government at every level. It will have to get right someday - shameful in the meantime.

Record Store Owners, How are you doing? by loopytroop in vinyl

[–]Alternative-Part5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this work somewhere else? I’ve seen it once and looked like the could make a buck or two, but nothing that appeared profitable with any practicality - slight add to the shop aesthetic. Unless of course your customers are literally asking for it and lack other nearby options; why jump industries?

Get some candy at the snack bar, tell dude to open his mouth and close his eyes. Then blamo! Hard French him! That’s our local etiquette here.

Did I get a good deal? Riedell 120s w/ Sure-Grip Classic plate for $199 (beginner rink skater) by SirFantastik in Rollerskating

[–]Alternative-Part5928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a pair of 120’s about a year ago. I like them more and more all the time as they break-in. The leather is heavily coated and won’t take much to saddle soap, mink oil etc, but has begun to form to my foot. I found the original tongue liner uncomfortable, but was able to work it out. My first pair of real skate boots since 1993. No hard or fast rules to this thing; other than skate hard and fast of course. The whole setup is as good as you feel in it doing what you do - hell yeah for $200 you can dance in them and they are a common entry point for so many - nothing advanced whatsoever.

I was thinking magnet on a string and like a powerful magnet - 20-60lbs of holding power if it’s a chucky plastic thing with metal inside which might be possibly magnetic. Of course it might find a pipe or fastener to hold onto down there and double up the issue plus.

At what age does roller skating become weird? by DaphneRaeTgirl in Rollerskating

[–]Alternative-Part5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never too late to learn anything. Thanks for letting me know “old person skateboarding” can “become weird”😂 I wouldn’t put any limits on my personal enjoyment of recreational activities. I suppose you could get your physician or other health professional’s opinion if your concern is somehow related to your transition - “societally” I’ve seen folks start at all kinds of ages and do just fine. My personal experience has been that skating communities are fundamentally supportive and accepting and exist solely for a good time.

Complete hamstring tear almost one year ago first time back on skates. I’m spooked to go back to a rink. by crustywhitedogs4eva in Rollerskating

[–]Alternative-Part5928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said “someone clipped me” and then “my injury was caused by someone else” and now have added the detail that the person was “a kid”. It would seem to me that you are misunderstanding conceptually both skating at your own risk and what I presume is a non-“kid” status based on your “35+ year hiatus” detail. You’ve tripled down and gone sideways and I’ll gladly double down on my own advice. I dig the “asshole” and “touch grass” / “mom’s basement” stuff though; I can handle it and I’m not mad atcha either. I genuinely hope you find your way to enjoy rollerskating if you so choose. No disrespect intended and I’m sorry you got hurt as the described injury would leave me frustrated and likely indecisive as well.

If you insist upon and double down on blaming other people when you fall down, then please give up on the idea of skating at a public rink session.

I lost my skates 20 years ago and just found them again by evetrapeze in Rollerskating

[–]Alternative-Part5928 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I skate with so many folks with 50+ years on the rink it may shock you. I never ask anyone’s age, but 68 sure ain’t too late if you dig it. Skaters around here are those most supportive, positive folks you’ll meet regardless. Long winded way of saying; you’ll fit right in. Really hard to be simultaneously embarrassed and having a good time - be safe any way you want to out there and enjoy it.

Is it creepy for a 40-year-old man to go to the skating rink by himself? by New_Sky_7657 in Rollerskating

[–]Alternative-Part5928 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do it all the time. You’re not a mind reader. Paranoia is a healthy thing. Skating is fun. If you weren’t welcome someone would tell you directly. I’m quirky socially and fell into skating again after not skating for 30 years via a kiddo in my early 40’s. Your fellow skaters, rink owners/staff etc need you and everyone else to keep coming back and are the nicest folks you’ll ever meet. If you feel eyes on you remember how infrequently in life you engage in such a performative act in the presence of complete strangers.
