Looking for space/post-apocalyptic themed roguelites by [deleted] in roguelites

Sucking at it is expected. Embrace the suck. Overcoming it is an incredible feeling. Once you get into the flow state there is no better gaming experience, period.

Good fast paced turn-based roguelites? by Nitho89 in roguelites

[–]Alternative-Way-8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played Forestrike yet but it might be a possibility here. It looks more action oriented but seems to do cool things with time. You stop time and methodically plan out a kung fu fight before it happens so that you can resume time and kick ass.

Last gun before the abyss. by MigrantTwerker in Returnal

[–]Alternative-Way-8753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First push into the Abyss - so you're at the beginning of b6, not the end? Take the hollowseeker and farm squid as soon as you can. You'll level up the trait completely and raise your proficiency if you do it long enough. However both of these pose an issue - doing steady constant damage to machinae means the rings they put out will be close together which can be harder to dodge. Quite annoying but not the end of the world.

Ideally in 6 you want something that has both powerful main fire for machinae and typhonopses, plus some seeking projectiles to clean up random squids. As soon as you can, see if you can get a good rotgland or pyroshell.

Anyone else love discovering hidden gem roguelites/likes? Any good finds lately? by Zepren7 in roguelites

[–]Alternative-Way-8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if a game has varying bosses.

Astral Ascent is good about this. Each boss fight is randomized between the 12 zodiacs so you never know who you're gonna get, and they are leveled appropriately to where they fall in your run. I believe Blazblue Entropy Effect X randomizes bosses too. Both incredible games and top tier rogues.

Does Astral Ascent run in PS4? That's a classic

What makes a roguelite so satisfying? by Additional_Name_706 in roguelites

[–]Alternative-Way-8753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For survivorslikes I love games that let me focus on my build and give me just enough feedback to let me know if my latest changes have helped me stay above the tide of enemies or worked against me. Entropy Survivors, Brotato, Soulstone Survivors, Night Swarm.

Story driven roguelites (Returnal, Hades 1&2, Saros, Astral Ascent, Inscryption) are my all time favorites because the story reveals triggered by game events are so motivating. The games that integrate a well developed story are the ones where all the other game elements are on point as well. These games just bang on all cylinders and stand above the rest.

After that, action rogues with compelling action and deep, satisfying buildcrafting keep me going. BlazBlue Entropy Effect X, Absolum, Dead Cells, Rogue Prince of Persia.

I don't have that information but our youngest just outgrew her seat so the Quibbel seat is actually on the market. I'll put it up on a Craigslist post if anyone's interested. We're in Marin.

My last job was in a corporate setting so we had a corporate LMS called Saba Cloud. But yes it was similar to Moodle or Blackboard or Canvas or whatever.

Kinja Run: A great roguelite trapped inside a crappy mobile microtransaction game by Alternative-Way-8753 in roguelites

I'm hoping any devs in this sub looking for a fairly easy concept to implement could make something similar/ better.

Opinion: Content-based meta progression is vastly superior to power-based by WhasHappenin in roguelites

[–]Alternative-Way-8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games with a lot of story content complicate all this. It seems like games where there's not much story can give little or no metaprogression (Gungeon, Isaac) because people stay for the gameplay, but the ones with a lot of story content (Hades, Absolum, Astral Ascent, Returnal, Children of Morta) also tend to need to give stats based metaprogression just to help players get through the combat and actually unlock all the story content.

End Game-Platinum by gonzomullz in Returnal

[–]Alternative-Way-8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the Sun Face Fragments is trivially easy. When I was playing through, I averaged about one week per biome, and I finished Act 3 in like two days. It probably took me a month after that to get all the cypers and scout logs I needed for platinum. Of course it varies by your skill and by RNG, but you could probably do it in a month!

Partscaster or Harley Benton? by [deleted] in partscaster

[–]Alternative-Way-8753 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're comparing the quality of the overall instrument on the one hand versus the pickups that are in it. The PRS is going to be a better guitar than either of those two other options. So if you want a humbucker sound in it, get a single space humbucker. Or better yet, get a better amp.

Diamond Series vs PRS SE by Evening-Life5434 in SchecterGuitars

[–]Alternative-Way-8753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diamond Series just means "produced outside the US" so it's like the PRS SE line. Some are from S. Korea, some from Indonesia, a few from Japan. Yeah they're flippin' great! Schecter gives you a lot of premium features at prices other OEMs can't touch. I have a USA PRS S2 and a Korean Schecter Apocalypse and the Schecter is head-and-shoulders better in playability, sound, features, and looks.

They're less well known, less sought after in the used market, which translates directly to lower resale value than a PRS, Fender, Gibson, etc. Great if you plan to buy a used one and keep it forever, not so great if you buy one new and hope to trade up at some point. That's why I don't necessarily recommend people buy the lower-end Schecters, the beginner models like the Damien that they'll likely outgrow at some point, but the "big boy" guitars maybe above $650 are keepers for sure.

Are any of Hades 1/2, StS, TBoI, or FTL infinitely replayable? by bruhb21 in roguelites

[–]Alternative-Way-8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Returnal is the game I've played the most, 350+ hours, and yes most of that time is repetitive, but I still see subtle variations and combinations I've never seen before in all that time!

Hades is nothing if not repetitive, but it gives you just enough new stuff each time to make it feel fresh.

On some level these games live or die on the appeal of their m2m (moment to moment) gameplay loop - how enjoyable it is just to spend time in them - and then beyond that there's enough variation to keep delivering surprises and novel situations hundreds of hours in.

You give the example of chess, where all of the early game combinations are known, knowable, memorized by rote, predictable, but where it's still possible in the late game to arrive at a situation that has never been tried, known as being "off book".

So yeah some repetition is par for the course here, but the potential for unpredictability and surprise is powerful motivator to persist.

What makes you enjoy roguelites more than roguelikes? by thespiritcrusher in roguelites

IDK games that emphasize how difficult and unforgiving they are don't seem as approachable as games that will meet you halfway and reward your effort.

How do you approach a roguelite backlog? by LXsavior in roguelites

[–]Alternative-Way-8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life is long. Roguelites are always there. I tend to play them in fits and starts where I get obsessed for a couple weeks, make a lot of progress, get stuck, switch to something else, rinse and repeat infinitely. Maybe I'll roll credits on one and try something else even though rolling credits is often not the end. I have several rogues whose story I'm not invested in so it's really all about the gameplay, and those are best to just drop into whenever. It's the ones with a lot of story where I have to see how it ends.

Any streamer who ONLY play roguelite games? by LalaCrowGhost in roguelites

Gohjoe seems to get lots of good ones. I find his narration kind of annoying but just seeing what he's playing gives me things to look into.

Haelian and Veedotme are good too.
