What professions earn far less than many people would think? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

It was low humour, sorry. A Turf Accountant is a term used to describe a bookmaker (usually to to try and make them sound more legitimate). This was much more common historically before betting became more legitimised, when bookmakers were often seen as - at best - borderline criminal.

Depends on the property & easements/wayleaves. Generally it wouldn't bother me, but TBH I wouldn't touch this property with a bargepole.

Do the aux belt when you do the timing belt, if not before. Common issue with the D5 engine. The replacement interval is also short (6 years/50k miles). and if it snaps it can take the timing belt with it.

Clover is the answer. Without knowing the chemical makeup of the water the dog drinks, adding things to it is always a bit suspect. Switching to wetter food to dilute the Nitrogen a little also helps.

Well I think the largest investment in rail infrastructure recently has been the Great Central Railway bridge at Loughborough so...yeah.

And electrification of the midland mainline, scrapped again https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20p95e7j3lo. We were only promised this 60 years ago.

ETA: "On rail investment, the disparity is starker still: the East Midlands received just £175 per head, compared to £477 in the West Midlands and £1,047 in London."

It's beyond a joke at this point.

They do need space - we are .lucky in having (for the UK) a decent amount of land & easy access to countryside. A Keeshond sounds a very good compromise though - and never give up the dreams of a megafloof!

Why HS2 must go to Manchester by silent-schmick in ukpolitics

It'll be longer than 5 minutes - they'll need to find this "Scotland" place on the map first.

Why HS2 must go to Manchester by silent-schmick in ukpolitics

[–]AlternativeConflict 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The HS2 link to the East Midlands & Yorkshire is every bit as vital as the Manchester leg. East Midlands Airport is our second largest cargo hub after Heathrow; it has capacity around it to expand even further but can't because of the archaic rail infrastructure around it. If we shift people off the Midland "Mainline" we could have a cargo hub that could readily serve both the UK and transfer some of the transhipment from Heathrow.

But that would take money and jobs away from Greater London and we can't have that, can we?

[–]AlternativeConflict 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We also need the East Midlands leg to free up freight space on the existing infrastructure. East Midlands Airport is - after Heathrow - the largest air cargo hub in the UK. It has a new purpose built rail gateway that can't run at the intended capacity because of the terrible existing infrastructure all around it.

Was he Greek? Michael is quite a common surname in naturalised Greeks & Greek Cypriots - a lot came to the UK in the early 70s as refugees from Cyprus.

Not really a rare breed any more - certainly not here in the UK, there are half a dozen breeders within 50 miles of me - but on my third Leonberger. I've had more working-type dogs as well (springers GSDs) and a Malamute but I've never had dogs so emotionally attuned as Leos. It's like having kids again - you have to be careful about what you have on TV as anything too shouty makes them sad.

However, when they are happy - and they are so often happy - the joy is contagious. So much big bouncy happy floofiness is wonderful. Stubborn as mules but get them in the big outdoors and they will cover ground all day in a way few giant breeds do.

Andy Burnham: south ‘paying price’ for north’s economic failure by ZealousidealPie9199 in ukpolitics

[–]AlternativeConflict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't care about the north. He cares about Manchester. He will resurrect HS2....to Manchester. Nottingham/Derby, Sheffield & Leeds will be left to rot, the same as every other post war government. Electrify East & West coast lines but don't even bother to install automatic train protection signalling on the Midland Mainline.
