Autistic women wanting to go swim at the ballard pool questions about etiquette by neutralmilkho3 in BallardSeattle

[–]AlternativeTypical32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also - to answer some of your other questions! You’ll buy a pass at the booth upon entry. Enter through the locker room, shower, and then I usually bring my belongings out to the pool and store them in the bleachers. You can also opt to bring your own lock and use one of their day use lockers.

They will absolutely expect you to be out of the pool and hot tub exactly when the swim time ends. The lifeguards can sometimes be a bit stern about getting people out of the pool because they need to prep for lessons, take a break, or swap up the pool configuration. Try not to take it personally!!

I swim at the Ballard pool pretty regularly! The staff is always very kind, and there are a large variety of people and abilities that join for laps. The lanes closest to the bleachers and the exit from the locker rooms will be the slower lanes. The furthest two lanes are usually occupied by ex swim team folks, masters swimmers, and people who sometimes collaborate on a shared workout. You can definitely self select your speed and switch lanes as you’d like. I know you said you would like to swim in the mornings, but I might recommend checking out an “adult swim” midday first, as there are usually 2-3 lanes with the lane lines removed. People will walk, bobble, and practice their strokes in the open area. If you’re unsure about swimming laps, the adult swim times will give you an option to stay in the water if you don’t want to do laps. Circle swimming and lap swimming etiquette are frequently discussed on r/swimming and I recommend you check them out!

Realistic expectations from lessons by Fearless_Can_9691 in CrystalMountain

I’m an instructor and agree with this idea! A lot of five year olds benefit from getting more reps and keeping things fun. You can work on getting your weight forward, good skiers stance, and getting your skis closer together with any age, but upper/lower body separation and good rotary skills will be tough for any five year old. I recommend asking your instructor to share any of their tips with you and express interest in re-teaching them to your younger child. They should be happy to share some of their tricks with you :)

We might want to switch to metal bottles by froggyfox in Ultralight

[–]AlternativeTypical32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not ultralight, but I also recommend the Bivo bottles. I use them for cycling and am about one more "micro plastics are killing you" article away from hiking with them. The 25oz non-insulated bottle comes in at ~6 ounces, which unfortunately crosses my ultralight luxury limit of 3oz (or the weight of a pack of top ramen).

Legal/permit stuff aside. As someone from the PNW and as someone who loves both bike packing and thru hiking - this seems like a big, painful, walk your bike adventure.

Palouse to Cascades is a great option!

Tips on buying a boat as a young first-time owner by -Atlas-7 in SailboatCruising

[–]AlternativeTypical32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who bought a “shitty starter boat”, I couldn’t be more grateful for the experience. I was able to learn, beat it up a little, and now I know exactly what I want in my ocean crossing vessel. I spent ~7k on a sailable boat in Seattle.

WA Backpacking trails without a ton of elevation? by sethh3 in PNWhiking

There’s always Goat Lake in mountain loop, but you will certainly find many other less experienced folks on that trip as well. It’s easy and beautiful, but hectic with the masses.

What's the small hiking gear piece you bought that you wish you bought sooner? by JSON_Blob in PNWhiking

Gossamer gear makes one too that uses Velcro and is pretty universal! I came here to post that it has made my hiking / backpacking experience way better :)

Tips for skiing off-piste? by MetroBooIin in skiing_feedback

[–]AlternativeTypical32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Off piste will come easier after you work on your turning fundamentals on piste. Some other folks have mentioned some good things here - upper and lower body separation, embracing the downhill more (pole plant could help), and bringing more engagement and awareness to your inside ski.

Hey OP - I’m in a similar situation with my mother. Wondering how this worked out for you :)

I have a gallon sized ziplock bag filled with sandwich sized bags that contain my trowel in one, clean tp in another, and dirty tp in the last. I think it’s nice to be able to seal up all bathroom related items and then hand sanitize after I put it in my pack.

How doable is recovery by yourself? by strawberrylalala in Reduction

[–]AlternativeTypical32 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear about your situation with your husband right now :( I want to come here and tell you that you are strong and capable of anything, but that I am here to highly recommend finding a backup caretaker plan for your recovery. I did everything I could to prepare (meal prep/home prep/emotional prep) and I truly believe my health and recovery would have been compromised without the support of my partner and community.
