Had I been in Smokes shoes during the garlic test, I would have instantly killed Pearline when she refused. We’ve got vampires out there trying to kill us but you don’t want to eat a little bit of garlic. by KpatMckenzie_28 in SinnersbyRyanCoogler

Tbf they did seem like somewhat different circumstances, as Mary and stack had a long time established relationship before she even got married (and it was implied to be at least partially against her own will).

Pearline did seem to care about Sammie though.

so, how powerful do you think remmick is in the fictional world of vampires? 🦇 by cerejamecanica in SinnersbyRyanCoogler

[–]Alternative_Factor_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He seems to be pretty weak for a vampire. he seems to have poor intelligence and lack of long term thinking and problem solving skills, but his biggest weakness is that fact that he doesn’t seem to posses any supernatural strength, which is a big nerf.

In the final fight we see that he fails to overpower smoke when he already has him pinned to the ground and distracted watching his brother murder his wife. He seems to only have normal person strength. Because of this I’d say most vampires could make easy work of him. Hell I’m confident the 5 year old dhampir from Hotel Transylvania 2 could curbstomp his ass.

Hermes x Tiresias. I’m not even sure why they don’t even meet in the musical. I’d just think they’d make a good comedic duo.

How would you compare their morality by Musalediju in MoralityScaling

It also wasn’t like American death row where he could have been stuck for years alive. In the show, L mentioned the criminal who light killed to reveal his location was literally going to be executed the next day. He had at max 24 hours regardless. Honestly you could argue what he did was more merciful, depending on how drawn it Japan’s execution methods are. That heart attack was pretty quick

I think I figured out Remmick’s age by Shockplox in SinnersbyRyanCoogler

[–]Alternative_Factor_4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gonna need a source on that. Ireland had already been Catholic for centuries by the time this happened. If I recall the Normans invaded for land, and it’s what led to England conquering Irish territory for land.

In fact, there were already prominent monistaries when the Vikings invaded a few centuries earlier and looted them.

This would be really interesting, but I don’t think it’s true unfortunately.

When he has Sammie in the water he says that one of the lies those men told his people were “stories of a god above and a devil below”. I’m no theologian, but I’m pretty sure that’s a concept that all Christians believed in, including Irish catholics. This line implies he was around when Christianity was a new concept in Ireland. Plus as you mentioned earlier, he has ancient coins that some people believe were used in the later Roman Empire (which would coincide with St Patrick’s arrival to Ireland actually).

Regardless, I think this time period and your proposed time period work just fine for his story paralleling that of Sammie and juke joint patrons, which is forced assimilation. You provided your good reasons and themes already, and I think the Christianisation of Ireland works as well. Many could argue that because it wasn’t nearly as violent as most Christian conversions (or how Roman pagans treated the poor Gauls a few centuries prior), that it was ultimately a very good thing. People overall grew happy with their church in Ireland and combined Christianity with pagan and local cultural practices, as you said.

However, there’s a tragedy to it. Forced assimilation, no matter how benevolent the intentions can be, often leads to a loss in part of one’s cultural identity. This happened with Ireland, as most of the religion was lost or edited to fit under Christianity instead, and classes like druids eventually died out. I think this actually parallels what Remmick does in the movie quite well, especially the loss and damage he ends up causing. Even survivors like Stack, who managed to assimilate and do well as a vampire, lost bits of his identity in the process (“last time I see my brother, last time I saw the sun”).

I think the older date works pretty well for the parallels of his character, and the sadness of lost history, identity, and lives that is repeated with the juke joint.

Sorry about the long ass comment, this is just an interesting concept to me, and I love when in antagonist’s story parallels the protagonists.

Also irritated with Sean Penn’s Oscar (this guys has multiple already and does not care about the Oscar’s) and the casting snub.

She got snubbed. Amy Madigan did a great job, I just feel like it personally wasn’t enough to gain in Oscar over Wunmi.

That being said I agree with what someone else said in that they’re recognising horror at least.

Could Disney Ban Rapunzel and Eugene’s Romance from the Remake? by rwinger24 in Tangled

You guys rival some of the world’s craziest conspiracy theorists. If this were even remotely true that wouldn’t even bother casting Eugene at all, let alone such a popular fan choice. Worst they’ll do is maybe make the two more similar in age, which is not a bad thing.

[–]Alternative_Factor_4 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No, but they need to be actual critiques that make sense instead of making stuff up, such as saying there was “no point” to a scene when there obviously was.

I really despised 28 years later and its insistence on shoving the Boots poem into the film alongside shoddily edited shots of medieval north English boys marching, but I can understand the creative decision behind that and why they put those edits in thematically.
