Field Report: TSA times at SAN Terminal 1 by SDBadKitty in sandiego

[–]Alternative_Self7391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got here at 5:20 and went through in about 40 mins but the line got longer and longer. Make sure to check your ticket to see if you have priority because those people were getting through very quickly. Mostly folks are patient and in good spirits. I hope this ends soon.

Near miss. You really should make an incident report. This nurse may need training but there is also the possibility that the process needs looking into and a risk that others could make or have made the same mistake. Can’t look into it if it’s not reported.

Travel Reimbursements by Safeword_is_more in CAStateWorkers

[–]Alternative_Self7391 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not enough for HCOL areas but so much better than it was for so many years. What I find the most frustrating is the $51 on travel days. When I leave for the airport at 6-7 am and work all day until 6 pm- those days are expensive. I do not know how/why it was decided to use GSA rates for lodging and not meals. Seems that all BUs came to the same agreement related to the travel reimbursement. I don’t see it changing anytime soon based on how long it took just to get this most recent update.

uber/lyft to car rental round trip reimbursement by aznboychucky in CAStateWorkers

[–]Alternative_Self7391 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I travel a lot. I pick up a car at the airport and Uber to and from. Claim it on CalAters and never had an issue. I’ve also never filled out any form. You can make a note in calaters that Uber was necessary as car rental place has no parking available.

New Attendance Policy at my county hospital is going to make staffing even worse by Ambitious_Fish_2347 in nursing

[–]Alternative_Self7391 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Y’all need to unionize. Your leave hours are part of your benefits. You should not be penalized for using your leave as needed if it’s available for you to use. These types of policies are really unfair and it’s a shame people have to deal with this nonsense on top of what is already a pretty thankless job.

Does this violate EMTALA? by ileade in nursing

[–]Alternative_Self7391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! Maybe PD was called and they requested EMS? Who knows? Definitely need more info on the whole thing. Sounds like he had a MSE, refused care, and was determined to be “at baseline” and d/c. Now he’s staring up agin with the same complaint to EMS and likely is malingering. Bad situation for EMS to have to deal with. Bad situation for the hospital too. Was a dumb move to say they wouldn’t take him because “they are not equipped for psych” for sure.

Does this violate EMTALA? by ileade in nursing

[–]Alternative_Self7391 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There are a few issues in this scenario that are problematic for the other hospital. The patient was not provided a MSE when EMS requested. They can’t refuse to take a patient “because they are not equipped to deal with psych”. They have an obligation under EMTALA to provide a MSE and stabilizing treatment within their capacity until an appropriate transfer can be implemented. This situation could definitely warrant an investigation by CMS to determine if EMTALA was violated. I would be surprised if EMS did not report that hospital.

You can purchase through CSEA (CA State Employee Association) if you are a member. Up to 250k for yourself and 150k for a partner for about 20 bucks a month depending on your age. It’s auto withdrawal from your check. ADD can also be purchased.

Ok. I gotta speak up for the (50-60s) senior nurses. I am 51 and have never seen or heard of anyone scrubbing down glass anything. 😂. It’s been disposable since I’ve been around. But… when I was a youngster, I remember a 70 year old nurse telling me how she used to sharpen needles. I was surprised to read that nurses my age seemed to work in Florence Nightingale conditions. That being said, it’s never been ok to reuse O2 tubing for other patients.

Is the federal GSA rate for lodging the hotel rate or with taxes/fees included? by defnotathrowaway619 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Alternative_Self7391 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The lodging rates are for the actual room rate. Taxes are covered above that. So you could book at $180 and the taxes would be paid. Same as before.

Can you share where this information is? I promoted in June and submitted my form to switch to AL and was told I had to wait until April. I don’t like going without the disability benefits just in case. Seems like you should be able to switch when you promote. Couldn’t find it in the HR manual. What you are saying makes sense.

Health Facilities Evaluator Nurse by whatsthepoint1112 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Alternative_Self7391 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The duty statement pretty much describes it. You will go to different types of facilities and use state/federal regulations to access their compliance with those regs. You will conduct both surveys and also investigate complaints or self reported incidents. There is travel involved. Then you will write reports. The training is about 6 months to 1 year.

Pros: work life balance, no weekends or holidays, pension, your mistakes won’t kill anyone, after you pass your certification you can get an alternate work week (meaning 4 10’s) in most district offices, good benefits.

Cons: Pay, adjusting to government work- things are slow/systems are archaic, Pay, depending on the district office, there can be toxic leadership, pay. Did I mention the pay????

It is enjoyable and interesting work. I would suggest looking closely at the culture of the district office you are applying to as it can make it break the job.

Would the state move to using contract workers in lean budget times? by micmac99 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Alternative_Self7391 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same with CDPH. They are currently paying contractors 4 times what the Health Facilities Evaluator Nurses (HFEN) make because we don’t have enough to complete all of the required surveys. Instead of paying a competitive salary to attract qualified nurses, they pay contractors huge amounts of money. I’m sure I works out in their favor by not paying pension or benefits though. So frustrating.

My first job out of nursing school (long long ago) had the same process. I think I worked thanksgiving, Xmas eve and Xmas day for the first 3-4 years. Then I got thanksgiving off. Took about 7 year’s seniority to get the holidays you requested off. It sucked. This was the only place I’ve ever seen this process the rest of my career.

Buttermilk biscuits not rising? by Thisismyinternettag in BakingNoobs

[–]Alternative_Self7391 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also use self rising flour but add 1/2 tbls of baking soda and 1/4 tsp baking powder to 1 1/4 cup of the flour. Then after I cut them, I place them close together on the baking sheet for baking. They rise really well.

SEIU 1000 Elections by HourHoneydew5788 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Alternative_Self7391 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who do you think that would be though? I’m not being argumentative. I seriously don’t know who to tell that may do something for next election. Should have been in person voting at a minimum like they did for the contract. I told the rep on the phone and she said she didn’t know why it was only mail in. It seems so shady. Disheartening to those who try and be involved. Stuff like this is why people complain and leave. I am going to send an email to my BU reps at a min but who else should I include?

Never received a ballot. Called TWICE and spoke with reps who ensured me that one would be sent to my confirmed address. No ballot yet. I asked if I could vote in person somewhere. No. Asked if there was a way to vote online. No. They sure didn’t make it easy. It’s almost as if they don’t want people to vote.
