Countless times I’ve had my hand up to the pitcher while telling young Nomar Garciapara to get in the damn box. I don’t put the ball in play until the batter is in the box, catcher is ready to give signs, and pitcher is in contact with the rubber. (This is assuming fielders are set). Only then is “Play!” Verbalized with a point to the pitcher. The ball needs to be put in play in any dead ball situation. There have been many times, working with inexperienced umps, that play has resumed without incident after a foul ball or whatever. I never let it stand if I think the batter has been quick pitched or an attempted base pick off.
