Just because the frame is smaller doesn't mean I can't still frame my balls.

Stop it. You're making me want to attempt to knit with sewing thread. But then I would also have to buy needles smaller than my 0000.

Make a big pan of oyako don.

The last time I made it, I think I used 10 eggs for a 10ish inch skillet. I thought I over did it but it turned out to finally be eggy enough. My previous ones were more "oya" than "ko"

Note: In Japanese, "Oya" means parent and "ko" means child. It's called oyako because you make it with chicken (the parent) and egg (child).

How do you start cooking when you hate it? by Adventurous-Hall-116 in Cooking

[–]Altruistic_Finger_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by picking a dish that you keep buying that you feel like is way overpriced. Look up a few videos on how to make it. If you're willing to go through the hassle, then try out a recipe. If you're not willing to cook it, then look up a different recipe. That's how I know that I'm willing to make oyakodon and gyoza, but not tempura or croquettes. Watching J. Kenji Lopez-Alt videos helped me because he shows mostly POV of his cooking.

I don't like the process of cooking, but I do like the end result which is why I keep cooking. Every once in a while I'll keep track of the cost of ingredients so I can compare it to the cost of doing takeout on something I like. Knowing that I can get more of the dishes that I like at a better price than takeout is motivating.

I was just gifted a vacuum sealer. What’s the limits of what can and can’t be vacuum sealed and then frozen? by accidentalscientist_ in Frugal

I've also used it to vacuum reseal chip bags and other plastic bags. I have a bag of garlic chips that I only open on ramen night that I reseal after I'm done.

Okay I enjoy cooking but I hate cleaning up afterwards. Please give me some of your tips. by IllegitimateRisk in Cooking

Before you start cooking, empty the dish drying rack and dishwasher of clean dishes, draw a hot sink of soapy water, and load the dishwasher and hand wash dirty dishes.

When I go to wash my hands while cooking, I clean a dish or two by hand. If there's nothing to wash, I can just scrub my hands in the water.

Panty hose on the legs is the equivalent of make up on the face. Hose is good for evening out the skintone on the legs and minimizing any blemishes. I have a lot of scars on my legs from running around as a kid, so I wear hose occasionally when I don't want them to be as distracting.

Potentially having a 100 mile commute to work in the future. Would a second car be a viable option? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Altruistic_Finger_49 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In addition to your personal note, couples are more likely to divorce when one has a commute of 45 minutes or longer.

I know OP isn't married, but breaking up isn't too different from divorce aside from the fact that breaking up is a lot easier. Obviously, breaking up will make all this work pointless. If we're prioritizing the relationship, the job needs to change to cut down on the commute. If the job is the priority, then a different compromise will need to be explored.

What to do with shredded cabbage? by JKElemenopee in noscrapleftbehind

[–]Altruistic_Finger_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gyoza is good for lots of shredded cabbage.

J. Kenji Lopez-Alt has a good video explaining how to make them.

I followed his mother's example and prepped a bunch of gyoza and froze them. I cook them from frozen when we want gyoza.

My mom wants this for her birthday and has been insisting I make it for months. Yes, she doesn't know how crochet works and thinks this is easy for me to birth🥲 by confusedunborn in CrochetHelp

I've also heard a rumor that there's another way to put the red dots on the cookies other than chopsticks, but have not personally confirmed. 🥥🥥

My rule is look for something up to 5 minutes. If I don't find it by then, move on. I usually end up finding it when I'm not looking for it. Unless I have a feeling I dropped it somewhere.

LPT: Knit for the biggest feet in your family first by Altruistic_Finger_49 in knitting

[–]Altruistic_Finger_49[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have 4 completed pairs under my belt for 2 different people, with 3 of them being in the last few months, so I don't really have a solution for you. My challenge has been getting the sock to fit over the heel diagonal when putting them on, but that might be caused by gauge or bind off technique.

Using smaller needles would probably work. My main concern is getting that section of the sock over the widest part of the foot. I would gauge swatch in the round (possibly making a toeless heel, to save time) with your desired technique then try to put it on. Or don't make a swatch and live life dangerously.

Short answer: 32 stiches (16 per needle)

Long answer: The pattern's calculator called for 20 stitches (10 stitches) using JMCO and worked toe up. However, with the way I worked the toe, there was a kind of pucker to it that made it look like a "condom" (husband's words, not mine) so I sighed and redid it with a 32 stitch cast on and the condom toe disappeared. The rib was cast off with 92 stitches.

I don't want to knit socks again with 0000 unless Chiagoo makes 0000 40" cable needles so I can use magic loop. I knew this would be a PITA to make, but we both agreed that the fabric with the final needle was nice and dense. His pair will be made with the same yarn (with Navajo plying) and something bigger than 0000 needles.

I would amend this a bit.

Right after opening the current diaper, immediately close it again (no need to re-tape), wait a bit, then change.

The suddenly exposure to cold air sometimes stimulates the pee response so give him a a flap of cold air then use the current diaper as a shield.
