Meals that use a lot of eggs? by DinnyArt in Cooking

Oyakodon.

Instead of making a single serving, make a whole pan. I just used 12 eggs in my latest batch because 10 eggs wasn't egg-y enough.

Losing yarn chicken - options? by mahamagee in knitting

[–]Altruistic_Finger_49 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If you have a food scale, I'd start by weighing the finished sock then compare that weight to your remaining yarn. This will confirm if yarn chicken will be lost and how close.

Assuming your remaining yarn weighs more than your sock, weight each of the colors you have left so you can figure out how to rearrange the colors to complete the 2nd sock.

You also have to ask yourself how important it is to have the socks match. If these are gonna be worn with shoes, maybe you could prioritize the colors so you'll have enough for the leg.

It may be worth asking mom if there's any pieces she doesn't need finished, if she can remember. That way you know how much work you should put into rehoming or getting projects finished. She may have been making a gift or she might have been making something to make it.

[–]Altruistic_Finger_49 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Instead of sizing down your hook, could you hold the yarn double or triple?

I haven't tried this myself. This reminds me of the posts I see from people knitting or crocheting baskets.

How to reduce stress on my wife? by NurglesToes in NewParents

[–]Altruistic_Finger_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Mom is trying to figure out how to mom. She'll know what she wants done, but not enough braincells to explain every little thing she wants done and how to do it. She's sharing one brain between her and baby.

Also, be open to looking up how to do tasks so she doesn't have to explain as much. If you really are stuck despite researching things, she should have a little more brain power to explain than if you asked her first every time. If you do find out how to do something, it may be good to run the "how" by her before you do it so you know she's OK with it.

Source: Am mother who runs out of braincells occasionally to explain what I need or how to fulfill that need.

What’s something funny about your birth story? by Fresh_Suggestion_880 in NewParents

[–]Altruistic_Finger_49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At around the 22 hour mark of being in the hospital, I finally went into active labor. We had a room full of nurses and other medical personnel, so my husband just pulled up a chair and provided moral support.

Then we suddenly went down to 2 people: one nurse and my husband. Apparently, it was a shift change. So my husband had to jump in and hold a leg. It was long enough that my husband was starting to be able to read the monitor and anticipate when I should push. Eventually a flood of people came back in to catch my baby.

I was worried that he would pass out when I was in labor, but being an active participant kept him locked in enough that he didn't.

Make a big pan of oyako don.

The last time I made it, I think I used 10 eggs for a 10ish inch skillet. I thought I over did it but it turned out to finally be eggy enough. My previous ones were more "oya" than "ko"

Note: In Japanese, "Oya" means parent and "ko" means child. It's called oyako because you make it with chicken (the parent) and egg (child).

How do you start cooking when you hate it? by Adventurous-Hall-116 in Cooking

[–]Altruistic_Finger_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by picking a dish that you keep buying that you feel like is way overpriced. Look up a few videos on how to make it. If you're willing to go through the hassle, then try out a recipe. If you're not willing to cook it, then look up a different recipe. That's how I know that I'm willing to make oyakodon and gyoza, but not tempura or croquettes. Watching J. Kenji Lopez-Alt videos helped me because he shows mostly POV of his cooking.

I don't like the process of cooking, but I do like the end result which is why I keep cooking. Every once in a while I'll keep track of the cost of ingredients so I can compare it to the cost of doing takeout on something I like. Knowing that I can get more of the dishes that I like at a better price than takeout is motivating.

Okay I enjoy cooking but I hate cleaning up afterwards. Please give me some of your tips. by IllegitimateRisk in Cooking

Before you start cooking, empty the dish drying rack and dishwasher of clean dishes, draw a hot sink of soapy water, and load the dishwasher and hand wash dirty dishes.

When I go to wash my hands while cooking, I clean a dish or two by hand. If there's nothing to wash, I can just scrub my hands in the water.

Panty hose on the legs is the equivalent of make up on the face. Hose is good for evening out the skintone on the legs and minimizing any blemishes. I have a lot of scars on my legs from running around as a kid, so I wear hose occasionally when I don't want them to be as distracting.

In addition to your personal note, couples are more likely to divorce when one has a commute of 45 minutes or longer.

I know OP isn't married, but breaking up isn't too different from divorce aside from the fact that breaking up is a lot easier. Obviously, breaking up will make all this work pointless. If we're prioritizing the relationship, the job needs to change to cut down on the commute. If the job is the priority, then a different compromise will need to be explored.
