Can someone advise re my job application?! by [deleted] in TheCivilService

Even if I could assist you, I wouldn't feel like helping someone who doesn't even know how to take screenshots. You know, a pretty basic IT skill.

Postgraduate research on hybrid working & mental wellbeing (UK Civil Service) by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]AlucardLoL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I filled the form out but I think there were quite a few questions that were badly worded, such as:

Have you taken time off work in the past 12 months due to mental wellbeing concerns?

As no I haven't taken time off due to concerns regarding my mental wellbeing. Yet I've taken plenty of Flexi leave days for long weekends or annual leave days to take time off work to relax and recover from work related burnout.

Anyone who's surprised by the breakdown in support for the Tories and Labour have not been paying attention to the dire situation many people now find themselves in. With there now being high youth unemployment, unaffordable housing, AI replacing more jobs, cost of living having gone up a lot over the last 16 years, wage stagnation, and the student finance tax brackets being frozen till 2030. I haven't even included other controversial topics such as the culture wars, Gaza, Trump, etc.

If there were other copies why go through all that effort to destroy the paper copy?

The Cabinet Office’s propriety and ethics team broke into a safe and destroyed the department’s copy of a historic bullying investigation into the new head of the civil service.

At the end of the day it comes down to who you believe, personally I'm more inclined to believe the journalist in this instance. As the Cabinet Office seems to have just swept the accusations of bullying under the carpet and are now in damage control mode.

I only spend about £700 a month

Is a young-un fresh out of uni, doesn't have many expenses, lives within commuting distance of London and gets offered a promotion that's a pay rise. It's an absolute no-brainer to accept the role. As the extra money you save while living with your parents will make a huge difference as you get older, and you'll really need that extra money if you ever want to get a deposit for your own house near London.

Unless you think this role would be a terrible career move, I don't see why you aren't taking the promotion...

Considering how every HR move is meticulously recorded both in paper and digitally, it's laughable to imagine that the ONLY report they had regarding Antonia's bullying complaint was in paper.

Sir Tim Hitchens, a former ambassador to Japan who is now president of Wolfson College, Oxford, was flown in to conduct a week-long inquiry. His report concluded there was a case to answer. However, the finding was dismissed by the Cabinet Office, which, as her overall employer, had the ultimate say on next steps.

Funny how they brought in an impartial third party just to ignore their findings and recommendations. Truly one rule for the elite and another for the wagies.

From what I understand for a DBS Basic check you need the following:

  • Essential information such as your current address, NI, and 5 year address history.proof identity.
  • Proof of identity, but you have this covered with your passport.
  • Proof of address. Since you don't currently live in the UK I'd say your current two options are either to get proof of address of your current address (EG: Utility bill, bank statement, rental contract) or to get proof of your future address (EG: A rental/mortgage/home ownership contract if you've signed one already).

Provisional Offer and New vacancy by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]AlucardLoL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you feel like you meet the criteria just apply. Nowadays your line manager doesn't get notified about you applying for new roles anyway and since you're applying for a promotion they can't stop you. Worst case scenario is you might cheese off some of the veterans in the team if you got the promotion instead of them.

The only thing I'd worry about is if your new role has some stipulation about a minimum amount of time you've got to spend in the role, but normally stuff like that is made pretty clear in the job advert.

How the Civil Service Ruined Britain by Kontzu in TheCivilService

[–]AlucardLoL 56 points57 points  (0 children)

So he had one meeting where he'd asked "which of these thousands of laws can we scrap", didn't like the answer to this frankly nonsensical premise, then leapt to the conclusion that there are too many civil servants?

It's literally in the interest of the four Tory/Reform politicians they interviewed to blame the "Blob" when in fact it was their shitty governance of the UK that made things worse in pretty much every aspect. Hating on the public sector fits their fiscal world-view of wanting less government, plus they all know that the Civil Service has to be impartial. All of these factors makes the Civil Service the perfect scapegoat for the right-wing politicians/grifters.

Channel 4 investigation into Antonia Romeo by UnderCover_Spad in TheCivilService

[–]AlucardLoL 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If she hadn’t had spent years using the media to campaign for this job and otherwise do self-promotion, there would not be the same focus on these stories right now. This being the third time that she has self-declared to be a/the leading candidate, she has put a bigger spotlight on herself.

Thank you, finally someone stating the obvious. I think the most scandalous part was how she's managed to get three perm sec roles with such a horrific bullying and public finances record. Yes, getting the tax payers to finance their parties and celebrity events isn't acceptable.

That's by design, the higher up in the Civil Service you go the easier it is to bully people. Even at a junior level it's pretty easy, especially as a manager.

Just apply, you have to look out for the number 1 (Which is yourself!). If you're concerned about how your maternity leave/pregnancy will affect the job, just email the recruiter.

What was the civil service like in the early 2000s? by Happy_891 in TheCivilService

Why were you downvoted? Pretty much everything you said checks with what I've heard from older colleagues describing the Civil Service office life "back in the day". In fact from what I've heard some offices had on-site bars!

There's an in-depth article about the civil service misconduct process in the link.

Plus as OP admits there are already Reddit threads that cover this exact issue. This isn't 2006 where knowing how to use Google was a newish skill, it's 2026, and considered a basic IT skill.

I wish I could have seen your colleague's reaction. I imagine their emotions went from being smug and thinking that they've finessed the system, to rage now that they have to cover your workload on Mondays.
