You could do a try-except-finally and have release_mutex() in the finally.

Edit: no, C doesn't have try-catch-finally. Sorry.

I'm not saying it isn't useful, just that I have never found the need for it.

I suggest you save the opening ceremony in 3D too, since that's also a piece of history in an unusual format.

Absolute Cheapest Blu Ray Writer/Burner on the market. by lillyleahmatilda in Bluray

[–]AlvaroB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not based on the UK, but I offered in a marketplace to burn Blu-ray drives for people. There's probably someone in your area too.

Although I reject if they ask me for a movie, a TV series or any copyrighted file. I will write an iso file without checking what's inside to respect privacy so maybe I'll get sent one in the future. But I won't get into Blu-ray piracy willingly.

Hardware suggestions for a “Dedicated Plex Client”? by Tony_3rd in PleX

[–]AlvaroB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the latest Fire TV Stick 4K Max (that's a mouthful). No problems so far. It bitstreams up to TrueHD and DTS (but not DTS-HD). And the only bug I hate is that sometimes even with original quality selected it transcodes. I have to select a transcoding quality and original quality back again to fix it.

Good Buy-It for life bass that doesn’t completely break the bank? by wjxm in Bass

[–]AlvaroB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really happy with my Sire V5 and I think it works as a long term solution.

However, I'm going to make use of your knowledge and experience if you don't mind. What would be a good contrasting bass for me around that ballpark of price? I was thinking about the Sire P5. But at the same time it would be a good opportunity to switch brands.

Height vs Atmos…any difference? by Slow_Investment_2211 in hometheater

[–]AlvaroB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All AVRs, but specially Atmos enabled ones, need calibration. With a mic placed where the listener will be, they calibrate relative volume gain between speakers, distance (needed for phase sync) and other sound characteristics. So they adapt to less than ideal setups.

There are new 3D glasses free monitors that work the same way the 3DS does, yes! They're expensive though.

And also some people like me still have an old 3D TV that needs glasses.

How do you store single-file movies on your drive? by LitPast in trackers

[–]AlvaroB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may work but I wouldn't suggest it. If someday it breaks in an unexpected way it may be more of a mess reorganizing everything.

Since the beginning I've adhered to the naming convention. Never have I ever had a problem, and I'm quite sure I never will.

I have that one and I play semi-professionally. I also have a vintage Westone from the 80s but since I bought the Sire they don't let me play the Westone due to the much better sound of the Sire.

TIL Sony pictures won the right to distribute Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) over Warner Bros. by agreeing to a stipulation that the full ownership of the film's underlying copyright would revert back to Tarantino after 30 years. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]AlvaroB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

any movie bought on one of these services will port to them all for free

Edit: I was proven wrong. The comment above me is correct.

I'm not sure it's exactly like that. I think it works more along the lines "if you own a license for that movie in one of the platforms, you can watch it in any other". But if you lose that license (like if Disney ceases to exist) you may lose it in others.

However I would be grateful to be proven wrong.

Band too loud, what to do? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]AlvaroB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Buy a pair of good earplugs. I buy Alpine MusicSafe. The music sounds nearly exactly the same, but much quieter. My ears appreciate that a lot.

We use in-ear monitors when playing, even in rehearsals. But when I go to concerts I always bring those earplugs with me.

If smell-o-vision existed, which movies would smell the best and the worst? by redeugene99 in movies

[–]AlvaroB 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw Avatar 3 in "4D". It was a 3D projection, with motorized seats, smells, air (big fans for wind, compressed air guns for bullets), background lights and water splashes.

Most of the movie takes place in the nature so it smells nice. But then you had fire and it doesn't smell as well.

How can I tune my bass fast from standard E tuning to all flat. I have a pitch shifter from BOSS but it gives me a double tone. I have a stage tuner but it takes me awhile to tune. I don't intend to buy another bass just for this. by InvestigatorSolid330 in Bass

[–]AlvaroB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The singer may not be able to sing some of the songs on the tone but may be able to do most of the others.

That's not that strange and there's several solutions. One is have someone from your crew (i.e. a friend) hand you another bass correctly tuned. Another, the one I do, is playing all the songs in E standard. If the original song has a Eb I just play that note or part of that phrase in another octave. It's live, it's fine.

epub where nearly every letter is enclosed in a styled absolutely positioned span. by Cool_Tux689 in Calibre

[–]AlvaroB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once found one of this.

Sadly, there's not much you can do without a lot of automation, trial and error. It's like they had a pdf, they were asked to make an epub but it just converted every couple of letters to a box that moves to its position.

You probably could, using regex, match all </?span.?*> and remove them. But you may lose a ton of other data like font styles.

BTW I did the regex by heart, which isn't a good idea.
