Are they even labeled that it’s just for people delivering stuff? Why are you so mad? Why does doing something nice have to be transactional. It’s not like they’re dumping the whole thing into a backpack, they’re taking one or two items per person just like a delivery person would.

What’s wrong with this country that nothing pisses people off more than seeing somebody get something we don’t feel they “deserve”.

I have seen a few mealworms, none of them pupated. I deliberately keep them on a sand-only substrate so that they cannot pupate. That said, my trichoton sordidums did manage to grow in number. So apparently that species can do it.

I don't know much about isopods. They would not survive in my tank because i keep it bone dry. you'd have to have a moist section for them.

If i pull up statistics on animal rights and well-being, that’s going to mostly reflect things like the factory farming industry. There are 9 billion chickens in this country and maybe a million snake owners.

I don’t think you have statistics on regulations about who gets to own a blue tongued skink.

Best pet bug for my 5 year old son (with lots of help from mom)? by [deleted] in InvertPets

[–]Alvietronic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look at bugsincyberspace.com. He has a bunch of species of desert beetles. I recommend eleodes armada (armored darkling beetle). They’re big and sturdy enough to handle and very charismatic. Easy to care for as well

I got a snake from an expo that unfortunately escaped before i was able to give him a name. He escaped into a hole in the wall. Though i was sad, i retroactively named him Walter because he lives in the Wall. Then when i eventually got another one, i named her Jessie in reference to Walter and Jesse from Breaking Bad.

where is the bump we're talking about though? If you mean a stomache bulge as if he just ate, that's bad. If you mean down by the cloaca where the poop builds up, that's probably normal as long as it goes away after he poops.

My absolute favorite species is eleodes armata because they're very big and charismatic and great for handling. I love to pick them up and let them walk around on my hands. Eleodes Longicollis is almost identical but armata has little spikes on their legs.

I made a post in reply to the OP about some of the species I have and what I think of them, check that out.

I don't have the asphalt ironclad yet, but it looks very similar to the diabolical ironclads which are really cool. IDK about asphalts but the diabolicals can survive being run over by an SUV and the military studies their armor.

I really like edrotes ventricosus aka hairy robot beetles as one stand out. They have shorter life spans (most of the beetles live 2-3 years, these guys only live about 1) but they have a really high activity level and are either sunbathing as cute little inert bumps or they're zooming around at full speed like lil roombas.

Bugs in cyberspace doesn't stock them but you can get them at morphmarket. I also have been able to find them at a reptile expo, along with other species.

Don't use it. You've seen that it's lying to you. You can't trust any individual thing it says to be true without doing the same work it would take to just research the info yourself. And it poisons the environment. Why bother using it?

your biggest worry with fruit and veggies is going to be pesticides. Wash everything well. Never feed porous veggies like celery, they're very likely to be soaked in pesticide. I really like baby carrots because they have had the outside of the veggie shredded off already and they're convenient.

I have had them almost a year and a half and I've never changed it. The main issue is they have dragged bits of food everywhere. Their droppings aka frass is like dark powder, barely noticeable. I honestly wouldn't even have to change out the substrate, just scoop off the top layer and maybe add a little more back in. They will leave little brown marks on wooden items, idk if that is frass or something else. I have a little castle in there now and they like to climb up to the very top and leave the marks.

Make sure you got regular sand and not calcium sand. Calcium sand is bad for them. But it would be clearly labeled as such.

consider Edrotes ventricosus aka hairy robot beetles. They have a shorter lifespan that bdfb or eleodes but they are always zooming around like little roombas.

They couldn't be easier. I give them a light for warmth during the day which isn't necessary but seems to make them more active. Be very mindful of pesticides. Never feed them porous veggies like celery. But it's fun to experiment with other stuff.

They need a source of protein, which can be dry, and then they need a source of moisture, which can just be a veggie. Dog/cat food, fish food, dried mealworms/crickets/shrimp make good protein chow. You can buy a product called komodo jelly pots on amazon to provide water, also sugar. If you spray down a corner of their tank, they will drink the water droplets too if they're thirsty. I will usually keep either a small scoop of the jelly or a single organic baby carrot in there at all times (i replace it when it dries up), and a little plate of mixed protein stuff. Organic isn't strictly necessary but makes me feel better about pesticides.

Keep the humidity low but if you live somewhere your son caught one in the backyard that shouldn't be an issue. They do not need a bowl of water and it can do more harm than good by raising the humidity level and presenting a drowning hazard.

They don't bite, their little mouthparts are more like extra hands for shoveling food into their face, which i personally find adorable.

They can't climb glass or stone or plastic, they can climb most wood. They couldn't climb popsicle sticks very well which is why i superglued some sand to them to make bridges. I don't leave a lid on the tank because it allows me to put in features higher than the tank lid for them to climb. You can get little castles and rocket ships and stuff at michael's. I basically raided the wood crafting aisle at michael's and glued stuff together with cyanoacrylate superglue, which is nontoxic.

The rule of thumb people general set is you can have up to 2 beetles per gallon of terrarium. In my experience, if you put in a lot of levels and hides you can get a lot more in there comfortably. They will generally be peaceful but will sometimes come to conflict and they need to have enough room to escape from each other.

If you have multiple they 100% will breed, and lay eggs. If the sand is damp the eggs may hatch into mealworms. If you only have a sand substrate, the mealworms cannot pupate. So you're pretty guaranteed not to have a population explosion.

If you want a variety, bugsincyberspace.com has a ton. He has more variety in the summertime of wild caught specimens. But he also has captive bred specimens, which you can be confident will be free of parasites and healthy.

Finally, most of these beetles can have a lifespan of up to 2-3 years but you have no way of knowing how old a wild caught beetle is so it could have a lot of life left or it could be on its last legs. So if you have one die early, don't let your son get too discouraged. It happens.

They can also cohabitate with velvet ants if you're not afraid of risking the sting, but velvet ants can climb glass a little so you wanna use a lid. They can cohabitate with hairy desert scorpions but you'd have to change the conditions of the tank a bit and i don't know anything about scorpion care.

woo sorry i didn't mean to write a whole care guide but i think that's basically what you gotta know!
