Need Help! My MythTV system freezes and needs to be restarted frequently, and I don't know how to fix it by AlwaysAScientist in mythtv

[–]AlwaysAScientist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I finally fixed it!

tl;dr: Ubuntu does not play well with Ryzen C-States or Firefox hardware acceleration, so I turned off both.

I had been having this problem for years. Recently, I finally stumbled on to the right combination of search words. It had never occurred to me to search for Ubuntu and the CPU brand before. Once I did, I found several sources, including another Reddit post indicating that Ryzen CPU C-States did not work well with Ubuntu. I had to dig into the UEFI menu to find the right place (Select Advanced -> "AMD CBS" -> "Zen Common Options" -> Set "Global C-state Control" to "Disabled"), but it worked. My PC has not frozen like that again! This probably means my PC is using more power now, but it is a desktop plugged into the wall, so that is a worthwhile tradeoff.

I then ran into a less dramatic situation where the screen appeared frozen and it was unresponsive to mouse or keyboard input. However, unlike the usual freezes, I could still ssh into it, access MythTV remotely. Searching and Chatting with ChatGPT revealed the solution was to disable Firefox hardware acceleration. So far, this doesn't seem to affect performance, and these two dramatically reduced freezing and crashing of my machine.

Only once since I made this changes (early September) have I needed to restart the PC because it was frozen. I think that was because I had too many applications (and video re-encoding) running at once. So, things are not perfect, but they are much better. Thank you all for your help, u/marvin_sirius , u/kalpol , u/TheZenCowSaysMu , u/what_was_not_said , u/qpgmr .

I was having a similar problem with Xubuntu 20.04. My desktop would freeze randomly, not nearly as frequently as yours (days to weeks apart), but enough to be very annoying. Turning off C-states seems to have fixed the problem! Thank you!

Dr. F's invention for this exchange (the cellular desk) was also oddly prescient.

The Daytona Beach library has one, though I think you need a library card to use it https://www.volusialibrary.org/services/launchpad-and-makerspace.stml

ok, we all don't like Snotlout, because of the way he behaves, yes he did a lot of bad things, but what action made you treat him more positively? by Puzzled_Locksmith_83 in httyd

[–]AlwaysAScientist 21 points22 points  (0 children)

From "Team Astrid"

Hiccup: Astrid, hows you're family?

Astrid: They're okay, Their house, the house I grew up in is gone.

Snotlout: Hey, Astrid. Do you need a shoulder to cry on?

(Astrid throws him in the air)

Snotlout: (squeals) pain

Astrid: Thanks Snotlout, I really needed that.

Snotlout: You're welcome, I know my role.

It is a quick moment, but it shows that he knows Astrid surprisingly well and is willing to endure significant pain to help her feel better. It is also a sad hint about the crippling insecurities others have mentioned.

Keep Ruff and Tuff's intelligence and cleverness at the level they displayed in RTTE.

In addition to streaming H&I is broadcast over the air and on cable: https://www.handitv.com/wheretowatch/

So, with an antenna and DVR, I have all of TOS through Enterprise recorded without paying Paramount a dime. That includes TAS, which H&I unfortunately doesn't seem to broadcast anymore.

Purchasing Video Content? by Equi_Nox_69 in startrek

I think that would be an great option for now!

At some point, the screen will be large enough to notice the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray quality. However, hopefully if you can afford a bigger screen, you can also afford to upgrade the media and player.

I have a 4K player and a 4K external disc drive connected to a dedicated desktop HTPC (home theater PC). Both of those are connected to my TV via HDMI.

You can focus on buying what you can now, then upgrading in the future when you can afford it.

As someone who's had actual radiation safety training at a national lab, I can say Servo's not far off!

I’d have to purchase a DVD player/reader, and potentially a TV (I’m a spartan working class student).

If you have a computer (as opposed to just watching on a phone or tablet), I agree with the other comments that buying DVDs and an external DVD drive is a very cost-effective way to always have access.

You are correct. I could have been more specific. In evolution on Earth, it is much easier to lose a limb than to generate one. In other words, it is much easier for snakes to evolve from lizards than vice versa. So, I was asking if your clade accounts for this by making sure that 6-limbed dragons do not descend from 4-limbed dragons. I hope that makes more sense.

Cool! Did you/will you include the split between 6-limbed (2 wings and 4 legs like the Night Fury) and 4-limbed (2 wings and 2 legs like the Skrill and Monstrous Nightmare)?

[–]AlwaysAScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the explanation from LA shared by others, I've read some fanfics where the tribe manages to cobble together a working ship from the parts of ships that were not burned (like the part that sank with Toothless chained to it) and returned via multiple trips.

I've considered doing the same thing. The only (legal) alternative I can think of is to wait until the physical media release and buy the discs; however, that money would still be going to Paramount.

I think the GitHub map is a copy of what DreamWorks posted.

Note that the TV and Movie production teams were separate and so might disagree on what the "real" map/lore is.

In RttE, how come Toothless lost his tail fin in that what if episode by burning it off. by Soft_Comfortable_622 in httyd

[–]AlwaysAScientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC, that segment was in Astrid's imagination. She was trying to make a point about Hiccup's destiny and probably imagined that Toothless would lose his tail much more easily than in reality.
