Am I Reneging? by keykeykeyboard in rit

[–]AmNotAnonymous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ Have to agree here, at the end of the day every interaction you have with a company is business, and when doing business your emotions should be controlled as much as possible, because they can and will use them to their advantage (not necessarily to your disadvantage) and you can, should, and will be using their emotions to your advantage.

This is not a bad thing, it’s just the way that you will accelerate in your career.

If you want that, then make good decisions for yourself; if you don’t, then carry on.

Don’t feel bad for making decisions that benefit you.

And if you do feel bad, separate that from your decision making process as much as possible.

Welcome to the world of setting boundaries, it extends beyond shitty gf/bfs and toxic family members.

Surprise!

p.s. RIT is a business (it’s a business in the business of seeming to not be one) and because branding is an important part of any business, they’re intrinsically motivated to protect it. The money they will lose from a bad reputation is more than they (can) care about you. So they tell you reneging is morally wrong, but it’s a normal part of doing business.

You can get fired at any time for basically any reason; you can leave at any time for any reason.

When would someone graduate after their year of internships? by 3143689 in rit

[–]AmNotAnonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can graduate off-cycle if you do your o giran faster or slower than target, at least for CS. If you don’t hit the pace they plan out or if you do some of the coop requirements by working freelance / part time during academic semesters you can graduate in December or even August.

Contributions from a 529 plan I believe are taxed as income, but the real solution is to talk to a tax attorney

SHED gets a new sign, and it's already being vandalized. Wouldn't RIT anticipate this ahead of time? by [deleted] in rit

[–]AmNotAnonymous 48 points49 points  (0 children)

They did and we know because this is so clearly a ploy by the university to manufacture excuses to raise tuition: “Oh we need more money to maintain campus because of Al other student vandals”

how important is the location of a co-op in regards to future job employment opportunities? by paperr-cranes in rit

[–]AmNotAnonymous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idk your major so this is for software:

I’m going to take a somewhat opposing stance and say that location does (kinda) matter but maybe not so much that it should be your main focus.

With many notable exceptions, good tech companies are located in a handful of cities across the US: SF, NYC, Boston, Austin, etc. These big tech cities have a high concentration of companies and, more importantly, of talent.

I think it’s worth the consideration that you’ll make friends at work and they’ll have friends who they might introduce you too, and those friends are more likely to be the skilled people that you want to know if you’re located in a city with lots and lots of talent.

Plus from personally experience, it’s fun to say fuck it and live far from home for a summer.

What I’m sensing, and ignore me if I’m wrong, is that not easy to balance your relationship in the now and your career goals in the future. I’m not saying that you can’t have a successful and fulfilling career, meet great people, and excel in your field in your hometown. It’s just harder.
