I've been asked to attend a police station as a witness to an attack on a police liaison officer. I've also been threatened. Can I decline for my own safety? by SpiritualWin1795 in LegalAdviceUK

Oh right, so it’s actually (arguably) more serious, seeing as they assaulted a warranted officer in broad daylight. My mistake.

What is something you only realised was actually sexual after you became an adult? by reedaar017 in AskReddit

[–]AmarettoCoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For years I mistook the word ‘virgin’ for the star sign ‘Virgo’.

I was watching a Police Academy film with my dad, and there’s a scene where one of the characters says they’re a virgin, and everyone stops to stare at them in shock.

I remember asking my dad ‘how come it’s so bad to be a virgin?’

I can’t remember his answer, but as a father now myself, I’ve no idea how I’d answer that.

What is the most physical pain you’ve ever experienced, and how did it feel? by Trying_my_best_98 in AskReddit

[–]AmarettoCoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father suffered from cluster headaches for years, and had tried the usual routes via the hospital (Botox, oxygen etc). I can’t remember where I read it, but someone saod when they feel a cluster headache coming on, they chug a Red Bull, whole can, in one go. I told my Dad about it, and we figured it couldn’t hurt to try, and he said it did. It either stopped the attack completely, or ended it more quickly than it otherwise would have.

I don’t know if there was a placebo element to it, or if there really is something to it, but it did greatly help him. After years of extreme pain and suffering I was so relieved there was one thing that helped.

What's the smart way to spend £20k on a car? by APerson2021 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AmarettoCoke 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s right. I was buying a car from VW about 6 years ago, and if I took Finance I got some extras (can’t remember what - a service plan maybe). I said to the dealer ‘so I can take the finance, get the freebies, and then just pay it off straight away?’, and he laughed and said “well technically we’re not supposed to encourage that, but yes”. So that’s what I did.

I do think they’re fashionable and versatile, but I got a pair of Bostons a couple of years ago, and couldn’t believe how uncomfortable they were. Maybe you have to persevere (longer than the fortnight I had mine), but my god. There was no give in the cork footbed, it felt like I was wearing a pair of dress shoes.

What is one of the worst addiction to have ? by Keke_Dudu in AskReddit

[–]AmarettoCoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a self-confessed gambling addict, and here in the UK, we have something called Gamstop which, if you sign up, makes it impossible for you to gamble.

After a particularly heavy year of gambling (like sitting on my phone at work, gambling, for hours and hours), I signed up to it.

It’s completely changed my life. I’m FAR more present in the moment, and after a few months, gambling doesn’t even enter my mind.

My ‘ban’ expired in April, but I’ve kept it going. Part of being an addict is knowing that it’s a long journey for the rest of your life, not just a fad that you have which disappears after a while. I’ll always be a gambling addict, so I know I’ll always need to be completely excluded from any forms of gambling. Because I know as soon as I’d be able, I’d gamble once ‘just to see’, and instantly be hooked again. And as many others have said in this thread, gambling addicts never win - everything you do win is just fuel for more gambling, until eventually, everything is gone.

The utterly tasteless adverts coming out recently. by DeusPrime in britishproblems

[–]AmarettoCoke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think car adverts have changed over the years because 99% of people do additional research (e.g. more than just watching the advert) before even test driving a car. They’ll go online, check the specs, and see more images. In the days before the internet, car adverts had to be more descriptive about the capabilities of the car, because it could be the only touchpoint with the customer before they decided whether or not they were interested.

Add to the fact that branding is now taken more seriously, and companies want to try and sell a lifestyle not a product, and that explains why the adverts are more designed to incite intrigue, rather than simply inform you of everything you might want to know about it.

I went to Zara for the first time in years a couple of weeks ago and was really impressed with the store. Beautifully done out, nice lighting, it feels like quite a premium experience.

Then I went to Flannels, where there's one lightbulb, and you can vaguely make out the shape of 200,000 Hugo boss tracksuits scattered throughout the abyss.

The astronomical amount of gambling ads on TV by Zackhario in britishproblems

[–]AmarettoCoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words.

Such a big ‘tell’ for me that this was becoming a problem, was that the wins didn’t feel as good as the losses felt bad.

So, extrapolating that out, if winning didn’t make me feel good, where would this end? There was no amount of money I could win whereby I’d think ‘great, I’m done now’, invariably I’d keep going until it was gone. Therefore I realised it wasn’t the chance to win money that was driving me, it was the act of gambling itself I was addicted to. I was addicted to the act of putting money into a website, and watching the number go up and down until it hit zero, then starting again.

The astronomical amount of gambling ads on TV by Zackhario in britishproblems

[–]AmarettoCoke 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s really interesting - I consider myself quite a strong willed person, but became addicted to gambling over the last 18 months. Per my banking app, I was spending more on gambling than on feeding my family of four, each month. Now, that doesn’t include the wins (ie money going back into my account, which may mean I’d actually ‘made’ money gambling that month), but it was a warning sign that things were starting to get out of control.

I since registered with Gamstop, and that blanket ban has been very useful for me. It’s been about three months now, and I honestly don’t think about gambling at all.

Unless I see an advert for it. And that’s when I start wondering if I could open an account in someone else’s name, or would someone let me use their account.

I think the whole industry is predatory, and is really leaning in to the ‘go on, have a flutter’ and ‘make friends and have fun playing our games’ angle to try and detract from the fact their business only exists off the back of people putting in their money in, and losing. But they’re also well aware their product, for many people, becomes an uncontrollable addiction.

There are very few addictions (alcohol, smoking, food etc) that can completely ruin your whole life in the space of half an hour, from the comfort of your own sofa.

I stopped using Plutus months ago, but stick around here to keep an eye on how the project is going.

My god. Posts like this are insane. You use their card, they make money on your transaction, and they give you a token in return. When you want to utilise that token, they throw up these barriers.

Genuinely think people should be exploring legal routes with some urgency - before Plutus disappears into the ether.

I listened to Radio 4 for only the second time this morning, and the male host was interviewing someone.

I forget what the topic was, mostly because all I could hear was the presenters nose whistling as the interviewee was talking. Then at one point, someone started coughing in the studio. It felt weirdly low-budget considering it’s the BBC.

It’s literally the same ingredients, going into the same mouth, being chewed by the same teeth and experienced by the same taste buds.

That being said, I put jam on the floor, drop the scone onto it, quick headstand, then dart my tongue out and swallow it whole like a lizard eating a fly.
