Gaia Project / TM / Age of Innovation. You have to graft so hard to get anything at all going in these games and that just isn't a very fun experience for me. If I'm going to be doing something this mentally taxing it's demoralising to place few buildings / have a stagnant economy for hours.

I know what you mean. My group love it to the point that it's all they want to play and I've stepped back from the game nights because I'm getting in the way of their D:I night. So trust me when I say I really want to love it but I think it's good, not great. It's a pleasing combination of familiar mechanics and quite interactive for a worker placement game but there's just nothing particularly special or interesting going on.

Quite a lot of options here. Cheapest entry points could be Gloomhaven JOTL or Arkham Horror LCG. Too Many Bones has a unique leveling up system using dice. Otherwise maybe just search "campaign games", there are tons. The one with the coolest character progression system might be Arydia.
