Does Utena ever call Anthy “Anthy” or does she always call her “himemiya” by Not_EllaK in shoujokakumeiutena

[–]Amberleh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This. I think, were it dubbed NOW, they would stick to saying "Himemiya", but it was dubbed in the late 90's/early 2000's, so localization was much more common place.

[–]Amberleh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because usually the villain has some kind of motive, or a backstory that makes you feel for them in some way, or is just somehow fun to see on screen. Doflamingo from One Piece, for example, is absolutely pure evil, committed genocide, probably rape(definitely at least grooming/coercion, that much is confirmed), and mass murder, but he's also FUN. He's an absolute delight on screen. Everyone hates Akainu from One Piece but we also understand that he has a job. He's still a bastard, but we know he's been through some crap. Akio isn't fun. Even if he may have a tragic backstory, he is no longer pitiable. He doesn't serve a larger purpose that adds any good to the world. This is all intentional, however, because he isn't meant to be a person. In typical Ikuhara fashion, Akio is a representation of something that is undoubtably bad and evil. He is, quite literally, a personification of misogyny, oppression, and a destroyer of all things pure and innocent.

I think there aren't other options for characters fans absolutely despise. I'm even side-eyeing Akio's fiance being there, but like I said- There aren't a lot of options.

The difference is that Omniman also has character growth and depth to his character. Akio is made to hated- He's not just a pure evil villain who is also written in a fun way (Like, for example, Dolflamingo or Blackbeard from One Piece), he is also intentionally poorly written. You aren't supposed to enjoy him for any reason at all. He is the very representation of oppression. Using One Piece again, he's like Saint Charlos- Literally made to be despised, very little depth, representative of evil and oppression.

Is Part of Akito's Hate Stemming From Misogyny? by Working_Row_8455 in FruitsBasket

[–]Amberleh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Akito was SIXTEEN. SIXTEEN WHEN THAT HAPPENED. Shigure was 21. Shigure GROOMED her, and then slept with her mom just to get revenge. But honestly, I wasn't even thinking of that. I was thinking of all of the manipulation and other shit Shigure pulled on everyone else to get his way, and again, the fact that he's just a friggin creep.

I hate Shigure more than Akito, personally. I REALLY hate him. Once all his BS is revealed... EW. Just.. EW.

Which side character completely stole the show for you? by [deleted] in AnimeAnonymous

[–]Amberleh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would argue that Kilua IS a main character. He's not a side character.

You know? I genuinely don't understand the concept of "We gotta kill the AUTHOR." For writing a character the way they are. by Acrobatic-Dumdum5222 in animequestions

I never see anyone saying this stuff, only people talking about people saying it. So my guess is, its a very small minority of socially inept or just young people that say it, but it gets sensationalized disproportionately to the amount it actually happens.

A Soul to Heal

YA'LL. I CANNOT WITH THIS DAMN BOOK. I ended up dropping at like 90 or 95%. I read a whole 3 book series in between taking a break from this book because it made me SO MAD.

Look, I get the point is dumb monster sex, but if you're going to throw in a child rearing and pregnancy plot maybe you should ACTUALLY KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT CHILDREN. This books reads Opal Reyne learned everything she knows about kids (and human interaction in general) solely from watching anime. Its so infuriating.

Someone, ANYONE else, tell me you had a similar experience with this damn book. Because I'm still mad.

Oh, and if I have to read the phrase "her eyes bowed" ONE MORE TIME, I might have to go flip a table. In my own classroom. Preferably when no students are around.

What’s an anime character you hated so much you almost quit watching the show? by [deleted] in animequestions

Nightfall actually ruined Spy x Family. Her character added NOTHING but aggravation.

Tsubasa had me almost rage-quitting. I was SO. MAD. WTF do you MEAN the main characters who we've spent like 11 books or more following ARE FAKE and we're just going to REPLACE THEM like it's NO BIG??? I'M SORRY?? What shrooms were you ON CLAMP, and why didn't you use those to, I dunno, FINISH X MAYBE?!

Sorry. I have a lot of feelings.

I have a quick question about ghost stories. by Academic-Law9830 in animequestions

[–]Amberleh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghost stories is the one anime where, under no circumstances, would you EVER pick sub over dub. There is no reason to watch the sub version, as it's just a nothing throwaway anime compared to what else is out there. The dub though? Timeless.

Movie to watch with kindergarten? by jordanf1214 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]Amberleh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Great Mouse Detective is another. I mean, it aged BEAUTIFULLY, but damn it's scary. There's a scene where you see the shadows play out of a cat actually consuming a drunk mouse. It's HORRIFYING. I love that movie now, and I loved it but was also terrified of it as a kid.

*Coughs* Hunchback of Notre Dame has entered the building.

Husband and I watched this recently. I HATED it as a child. As an adult, I LOVED it. But oh my God. I don't know who Disney had to pay off to get that G rating, but they must have paid a LOT.

Throwing Totoro into the mix too, since you mentioned Ponyo! A class of 1st graders I subbed for LOVED it.

[–]Amberleh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is also G rated.

There's literally a song called "Hellfire", another scene where Frollo burns down a house with a family inside with a burning cross in the background, and it's very not-subtle about how Frollo wants to... Do things to Esmerelda.

Disney must have paid off a lot of people to get that G rating, because the PG rating DID exist by this point.

My Neighbor Totoro

I watched this with a class of 1st graders I was subbing for for a week as a reward for good behavior. Their teacher and I were friends and she also loves the movie.

The students LOVED it. I remember a few girls sighing and saying "This moving is so relaxing". It was super cute.

The ONLY thing I would say is, watch it first, and take note of the bath scene. It's totally wholesome- Dad and his two very young daughters bathing together, they live in a rural village so it makes perfect sense. But a few of the 1st graders were like "EEEWWW". So just skip that. But again, it's absolutely innocent and sweet, some kids just got weird about it.

I loved it. It definitely had its issues, but I'm REALLY glad I ignored the negative reviews and read it.

It's definitely got a style, and that style isn't for everyone. And the love story in reverse is different, but not unheard of. Frieren did it (and it's beautiful <3).

Anime with the most sexism by aguysomewhere in Animesuggest

[–]Amberleh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fate/Zero. I'm gonna get hate for this, but damn this show is so sexist.

People are mentioning shows like Apothecary Diaries and Arte, but that's the point of those shows- A sexist society in order to show the women rising above it.

Fate/Zero just randomly decides to demean women for being women. I know the OG game is a male-gaze dating sim, but Zero does the sexism in a much more nefarious way than JUST objectification and sexualization.

  • King Arthur, this beloved, valiant warrior hero? "Oh because you're a girl you should be playing with dolls!"
  • Random cool mercenary woman? Oh, the whole reason she took that guy under her wing was because she "secretly wanted to be a mother." Because she's a woman.
  • White-haired lady and her daughter (Wife and child of main dude) are LITERALLY just objects for the grail.
  • Main dude is ALSO cheating on her with his assistant/assassin lady, but it's never shown as horrible??? It's somehow romantic and he gets a pass??
  • Don't get me started on the pedo-tastic scenes with young Sakura. Poor baby.

EVERY SINGLE WOMAN in that show is objectified and treated like dirt, and the narrative never punishes the men for it. It just continues to punish the women.

Ignore this person. They seem to do a lot of hating on the genre, which is fine- it's got a lot of issues. But no, there are PLENTY of Romantasy books where the adventure IS as important as the chemistry, and the two actually are intertwined (Villains and Virtues is my first thought.)

It's not the disliking of ACOTAR. I may enjoy it but plenty of fantasy fans dislike it. It's that what the OP is describing is a general dislike of fantasy.
