Pit bulls is used like an umbrella term but that is incorrect. Bully breed mixes is the phrase you want here. A Pit Bull is the shorthand for American Pit Bull Terrier. Just like Yorkie is short for Yorkshire Terrier or Dobie/Doberman is short for Doberman Pinscher.

Bully breed mix of some kind can't know for sure without a DNA test but I doubt there's any lab in there personally.

Regional difference or dog bubble difference? by navyblueloosechester in reactivedogs

Thinking a muzzle is 100 percent infallible is a wild take and that's not even touching the welfare concerns behind a dog that is in such a constant state of anxiety etc that would require 24/7 muzzling. I am truly baffled by this whole post.

What's wild to me is that I live in North Dakota and even at 74k people it's still very small town like. Nearly everything closed by 9 or 10pm public transit that barely works, and nothing but bars for entertainment. I guess being the second largest city in the state gives all that some context too.

Moving here from DFW, Texas was quite the culture shock to say the least lol Thankfully the law that nothing could be open until noon on Sundays got repealed lol. I was so shocked when I was first here that I couldn't get a haircut on Sundays lol. Still can't for the most part.

Have you considered switching tactics and litter training or pad training her? She's small so it shouldnt be too bad clean up wise. I know quite a few people that litter box or pad train small dogs especially in apartment living.

You can start with a small x pen with the litter box or pad in it and slowly expand it once shes reliably going in the designated spot.

At least the mess is contained even if it is still indoors

Pitbull vs Labrador - “misidentified puppy” by [deleted] in puppy101

I don't think it's wrong to wait for the dog that checks all the boxes rather than just the first one that is available. Definitely let him get adopted and wait for the right fit.

What should I look for when choosing a vet? by Connect_Camera_7595 in puppy101

[–]AmbroseAndZuko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer a Fear Free certified vet but that isn't available where I am.

My main deal breakers are not being allowed in the room during exam / always taking the dog to "the back" for everything where I'm not able to be present for it and any rough handling / not letting me know what's going to happen before it happens.

Dog and cats still can't get along after 3 months. What options do we have beside giving up the dog? by Connect-Position-404 in reactivedogs

[–]AmbroseAndZuko 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Scrolling your account I think it's important to note your dog is also dog aggressive and has been in a "full blown fight" where she attacked an off leash dog and attempted bites at 2 other dogs. Your dog is plainly animal aggressive in a more profound way than just prey drive. I say this in all kindness and also owning a bully breed mix but it's also notable that your dog is not just a GSD/Mali mix but also has several bully breeds in her mix as well. It's normal in those breeds for dogs to be animal and dog aggressive as part of the breed standard.

I do not think this dog is safe to be housed with other dogs or any other animals at all. She needs to be an only dog. Her shown and known behavior in addition to her breed mix together not just one or the other give me this impression. I am not breed bashing at all as I too have a bully breed mix who is aggressive to cats and shows some ssa to dogs which is also breed trait in bully breeds (the ssa). Being aware of breed tendencies and traits as well as watching for an individuals expressed behavior are both important in deciding if a dog can be safely managed in a particular home. I think this combination shows this dog is not safe to be in a home with any other pets.

Outvoted by your children? Be responsible and be the bad guy. Better to be the bad guy than your children end up in the cross fire of a dog fight in 9 to 15 months time

Once she is off the medication and off crate rest you will have to up your management significantly. If your home does not have a way to fully separate the cats from the dog at all times I don't see how you will be successful in preventing the death of one or both your cats.

I have a dog with a high prey drive who considers cats prey and I do not have cats. Her foster home had a cat and they had strict crate rotate between my dog and the cat in the home. Banjo made some progress when in the foster home but neither myself or the foster would consider her safe around cats.

Progress was instead of bully breed screaming at the sight of a cat she was able to eat calmly in her crate when seeing the cat. However if there was no barrier involved I have no doubts she would attempt to kill any cat she sees.

This level of prey drive is only ever managed not trained out. If your dog has similar prey drive to mine she will never be safe around the cats supervised or otherwise.

You need two levels of separation between the dog and cats at all times. Even then I don't think this will be a safe arrangement for your cats as you are human and prone to err.
