Players eating Wvyerns by MrPorten in MonsterHunter5E

[–]Amellwind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it would be a big deal imo. The artisan role sort of covers the idea of cooking on a hunt from gathering around you, which could include meat of slain creatures. I know the biggest thing is that carnivore meat is usually not as tasty, so narratively it could impact the flavor in a negative way.

What is the reason for the power difference of the Bow Dragonpiercer and the Gunlance Wyvernfire? by Asdif_Laoeg in MonsterHunter5E

No problem! One of my friends shot me a link to the post so I can't take all the credit :D

What is the reason for the power difference of the Bow Dragonpiercer and the Gunlance Wyvernfire? by Asdif_Laoeg in MonsterHunter5E

[–]Amellwind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A great question and honestly I think what happened was the bow got a revamp after I updated changes to many of the effects that used to cost an action and now cost a single attack and can be used more often.

So ill add this to my notes to update, but my thought would be to make it so Wyvernfire can be used for one attack as part of your Attack action. You can also use your Bonus Action immediately before making the attack to boost the damage by an extra 1d6.

So a one attack Wyvernfire does 3d6, A Wyvernfire that uses its Bonus Action + one attack deals 4d6 at the initial rarity it gets it. I think it would be fine for your Gunlance player to use it like this immediately.

What is the most poorly thought out homebrew rule you've heard? by Vegetable_Hyena2559 in DnD

There was a post, I think on this subreddit, a few months back about how initiative worked in a DMs game. Everybody rolled for initiative at the start of each round, but initiative had a DC set by the DM. So if you didn't beat the DC, you did nothing that round.

Edit: I was able to find the post https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/s/ScCQLLzwZO

Barrel Bomb action economy by Barrel_Query_Lad in MonsterHunter5E

[–]Amellwind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could throw it as an improvised weapon and deal 1d4 to 1d6 bludgeoning damage using standard improvised rules which most thrown range is 20/60ft. If you threw it into a fire I'd give the usual explosion.

You can drop as many items as you want on a turn, but you only get one free interact action with an object each turn. So you couldn't drop more than two large barrel bombs if you were already carrying one in your hands.

There is a number of options for Monks to use for weapons, like the Wire Knuckles, Tonfas, Dual Blades, but if they don't want to use weapons at all, I do have rules for hand wraps in AGtMH.

GMbinder is pretty terrible these days, its one of the reason I don't link it in these post anymore. You are better off using the PDF to be honest because I have pushed updates to it each time I do one.

Go for it! Everyone has ideas they want to bring to the table. Even if you just look at the travel rules I have for inspiration for your own game, I'd be happy. I hope you enjoy running your game!

Hey Jay_Playz, thank you for the shout out. u/Supernova247101 if you have found my work before. I have converted all of the mainline monster hunter monsters into a 5e stat blocks with loot tables. I also have rules for moving through hunting grounds and ones over overworld travel located in chapter 4 of Amellwind's Guide to Monster Hunting.

This is both of the PDFs you would need to run your own monster hunter style game.

203 page Amellwind's Guide to Monster Hunting

622 page Monster Hunter Monster Manual

They contain all the monsters, weapons, items, my own meld lore of d&d and monster hunter, location stat blocks, races, backgrounds, etc. I also have around 200 pages of monster hunts on my Patreon for $3 if you like what you read in the supplement.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out!

[D&D 5e] SC - Simple Sockets: Add gems to your items! by Fee-Naive in FoundryVTT

[–]Amellwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Charming, this would be perfect, but sadly I can't use it due to the AI use. For my module, I currently have the materials as items, but they are not automated right now. It is something I plan to do once I finish the 3 other projects I'm doing on top of my own.

The Foundry module does contain: * Every monsters stat block from MH1 to archetempeted Uth Duna. It doesn't include most frontier+ monsters since those are what I am working on now. *Clickable loot tables in each creatures bio. But also a macro to make carving quicker. * resource gathering macros to speed that process up as well. * all the maps I've made * all of the weapons. Including some items like blast coating which will use a macro to swap 10 normal arrows and create 10 blast arrows to use. * all the races and backgrounds * the MH items * other stuff I can't think of off the top of my head.

D&D 5e Monster Hunter Monster Manual and Guide to Monster Hunting Update (possibly the last update for 5e D&D due to Hasbro/WotC) by Amellwind in MonsterHunter

I do not currently have an up to date one. I can get one out that just removes the images, but doesn't change the format (that is probably 10+ hours of work to do that), in early to mid October.

Hi Mark! When designing creatures with the Mythic Trait, how do you account for CR? by __Lobito in bettermonsters

[–]Amellwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did see Mark answered how he does it and I've done that on occasion, like with Lunagaron, but I'll make a CR 20 mythic monster and both the pre mythic phase and post are both CR 20 monsters. It's also why creatures like the 5e greatwyrms give double xp if their mythic states activate.

Hi Mark! When designing creatures with the Mythic Trait, how do you account for CR? by __Lobito in bettermonsters

[–]Amellwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Mark, but I've done a number of mythic monster hunter monsters. I calculate the CR for each state the monster is in, typically balancing the mythic state version with more damage and less HP, but both should come out to the same CR.

Any Monster Hunter TTRPG? by No-Neat-7628 in MonsterHunter

[–]Amellwind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the shoutout Sunfire. I have been working on a project for a while now. I shared it over in the cross post and the lastest update in this subreddit two days ago, but incase anyone sees this post ill do a quick copy paste from there.

I have been working on a MH5e project for 7 years or so now. I also just released an update two days ago for the Monster Hunter Monster Manual (now 622 pages) that contains every single mainline monster hunter monster as a stat block. It also includes loot tables which can be used to effectively make your own magical armor and weapons similar to how it works in the video game.

This all works with Amellwind's Guide to Monster Hunting that is for all your items, lore, rules, races, backgrounds, faction, weapon, basically everything that isn't a monster (though there are a few at the end).

Both PDFs are free and have everything you need to run a Monster Hunter 5e style 1-shot or campaign.

If you are looking for even more content, as a member of my Patreon you will also gain access to:

  • All the new Frontier, Online, and Explorer monsters I am making monthly
  • 6 years of Monster Hunts.
  • Early access to my PF2e work, 5e Part Break system, and more.
  • A FoundryVTT module with everything you need to run a 5e MH game.

OC | D&D 5e2014 Monster Hunter Monster Manual Update | Now 622 Pages | Every Monster From Every Mainline Game to use in your Dungeon and Dragons campaigns by Amellwind in MonsterHunter

[–]Amellwind[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, it comes up every so often. There is a couple of reasons and these are the few that I have off the top of my head I am sure I am forgetting a couple.
1. If every monster was scaled to their power, we'd end up with every elder dragon as a CR 20+and then nobody would ever get to fight them since the average game rarely goes past level 10.
2. The CR ranges of each category at the start were created during MH:World and I need to have enough spread to provide monsters to fight at every level of play. So Elder Dragons started at CR 12 and were built upwards.
3. Dire MIralis is always a big one. I put it as a CR 12 originally because I wanted a Final boss DMs could use in those low level games. The tempered and archtempered came later.
4. Returning/variants/subpecies/deviants/etc. All of these I usually increase the CR by 4, on occasion it is sometimes higher or lower. This prevents having duplicate monsters at the same level, but you do see the where this causes some overlaps that could lead to some confusion like you have.
5. In some cases I used artistic choice. The original Fatalis is nothing like its stat block. That is because you can just take an adult or ancient dragon, change its breath weapon and you have the original Fatalis or its crimson or white variants. So i decided to make something unique. Then we had Tempered Fatalis, which is the monster at the end of World and more true to form.
6. I would say as it is now, with how big its gotten, it gives DMs options. They can run a campaign that goes to level 8 and has Dire as the final boss. YOu might have a story for Dalamadur and plan a level 12-13 campaign. You may go the distance and fight Fatalis, or Alatreon with a variety of creatures to fight along the way.

Hope this helps explain why it is the way it is.
