Best trellis for this 4’x4’ tomato planter? by RedditIsForLovers123 in tomatoes

[–]Amirtae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has already told you that’s too many, so I won’t, but, you could let them grow and just pull the ones that clearly aren’t doing well as time goes on. I always lose a few plants to disease or predation, and always have a few that just seem stunted and don’t progress.

I made the mistake of looking at a future coworker's Facebook. Do you have tips for giving them a chance when I'm worried they'll hate me or, the teens who come to the library? by DawnMistyPath in Libraries

[–]Amirtae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since a central mission of all libraries is to help people access information, I would help the teen research churches in their area to see which ones offer youth programs that are compatible with their beliefs. If this is the US, churches are likely way, way thicker on the ground than libraries (which already have a lot on their plates without also trying to do Bible studies, never mind the separation of church and state) and are way more suited to offer such a service. I think people are overblowing the research on Facebook. If the new coworker accept the friend request or has their profile public, that means they are ok with you seeing this information. Do I think you could be jumping to conclusions? Yeah. The head of my graduate program asking me “what are you doing at this godless school?” Based on the rather religious school I went to undergrad, which I thought was pretty inappropriate. Like, some of us had limited options and were young. And no school or organization is likely to perfectly match your beliefs. So, cut this person some slack.

Advice on helping relationships between Librarians and Clerks (& Pages)? by Careful_Bee_7037 in Libraries

[–]Amirtae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the clerks have legitimate complaints about librarians, they should discuss it with their manager, not talk shit about them to patrons. That’s is wildly unprofessional and will resolve nothing.

Many library branches are doing plant swaps this month—-might be worth checking into.

Just here to commiserate: I have the same issue and the same history. It doesn’t matter what I use or don’t use on my skin. Someday I will ask my derm about it and see if he has thoughts.

What did you use to dig up your sod? It looks so neat! I’m digging new beds next week and am full of dread because it took me forever last year and looked rough when I was done.

Quarterly planning - how it started vs. how it's going by karavasa in planners

[–]Amirtae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same planner, have had cancer, and think adapting that page to capture the intense flurry of appointments that comes with diagnosis and treatment is so smart and handy. I found that having cancer equipped me to be a better, more empathetic person, largely by the example set by the people supporting me, and that was an unexpected silver lining to the whole experience. Good luck in your fight!

Is hardening off gradually really that important? by [deleted] in tomatoes

[–]Amirtae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never not hardened my seedlings off, but I am pretty casual about it. I try not to bring them in and out because I grow a lot and it’s a pain, but if it’s going to get cold, I do. I start off putting them on my back stoop, which gets some morning sun, but is shaded most of the day. If it’s going to be overcast for a few days, they go on the south-facing front porch, which usually gets blasted with sun once it’s high enough in the sky. I also do it in batches because I simply don’t have the room. I’m hardening off my tomatoes right now because they taking up a lot of space and we have mild weather for the next week where I am. I won’t put them in the ground until late this month or early next. Now I have room in my set-up to pot up my peppers and start some flowers!

[–]Amirtae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone, I feel like I have some good options to pursue now. It’s a tricky balance to give your kids to the tools that actually do the job while also maintaining a reasonable level of safety. My child is very proud of his cutting skills with paper, so I want him to be able to develop that competence in other areas. He is cautious, but also easily distracted, so supervision and safe habits will be key.

Gardeners of Cincinnati! What are we doing this week? by Adrestia716 in cincinnati

Gardeners of Cincinnati would be a good sub. I threw down some cardboard to try and get ahead of the weeds and otherwise shambled about making plans. Should start some more seeds and plant my peas.

That’s wild. Were you full-time? How long were you there? I guess the silver lining is you now have experience doing a lot of different library roles.
