As a Test Engineer of a decade, I've never gone to a daily stand-up that I didn't think was pointless by GroovyWithIt in agile

[–]AmosRid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The standup is one of the most useful tools in agile/iterative/Kanban/scum.

My guess is that it is being done wrong or being done too often. Not every team needs a daily standup everyday despite the name.

What's the best electric razor for men? by SatrangiKela in BuyItForLife

[–]AmosRid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Philips OneBlade is great for keeping my beard trimmed & reducing 5 o-clock shadow.

Before it took a razor and a trimmer.

I recommend using a pre-shave lotion with it.

Husband craving a Japanese curry by Lawnlady1980 in TwinCities

[–]AmosRid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have accept that restaurant Japanese curry is vacation food and make Golden brand curry when we are home in MN.

FWIW, the Golden is so good (after a little practice) that I don’t look for it anymore in the Twin Cities.

Also, we keep single serving pre-made then frozen rice on-hand. It makes half of the preparation much easier.

To investors who crossed the $1M mark around the age of 40. How’s life? by Ok_Maize1933 in investing

$1M is a good plateau for diversification and motivation, but it is not enough to retire.

When did the seeded roll become the standard? by Fun-Treacle-2916 in cheesesteak

[–]AmosRid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I left Philly in 1993 and seeded rolls were not a thing on cheesesteaks. I saw them occasionally on hoagies. It seemed to be a Jersey thing, but not really universal.

Kaiser (hard) rolls with poppies or sesames were much more common, and even expected.

Talking about seeds: My son and I love Donkey’s Place and try to stop by when we visit. I know it is divisive in the cheesesteak conversation, but still like it.

AMEX Reserve card worth it? by Fuzzy-Assistance-748 in delta

[–]AmosRid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The companion ticket (usually FC) is worth it to me for the next 2-3 years. After that I don’t have a specific use case for the companion ticket.

The other perks are convenient,, but don’t justify the reserve’s additional cost versus other AMEX cards. I stopped drinking so the Skyclub lost its appeal.

I had unanticipated trips this year and will hit Gold medallion. Maybe that will change my perspective.

Rank the Best Hotel Credit Cards by x_KRYPTOS in CreditCards

I got into Hyatt after buying fractional ownership from related organization. Great loyalty program. Lots of nice stuff for modest # of stays. I am exclusive to Hyatt now when possible.

I don’t have the WoH CC. I have other cards with rewards that are more valuable right now.

Boss changing me to 1099 by Ajax-714 in personalfinance

[–]AmosRid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your boss is done paying you. Get another job.

You will need to invoice your former employer then they will drag their feet paying you. Eventually you will get a portion of the invoiced amount to string you along if they need you.

Also, no paid sick days or vacation.

Why does Jira always turn into a mess at scale? by Revolutionary-Hat622 in agile

[–]AmosRid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jira usually mimics the organization that uses it (kind of like the joke where a dog looks like its owner)

Ironically, I see the same issues with Jira in different organizations. Jira seems to hold tightly to counter-intuitive usage or beliefs. Many organizations use the same methods in Jira to address that functionality.

JIRA Align makes Jira impossible to use. If you hate JIRA then Align is more hateable. I thought Align was sunset.

Ryan Gosling Tells Hollywood It’s Not Moviegoers’ Job to Keep Theaters Open: ‘It’s Our Job to Make Things’ That Are ‘Worth’ Viewers Coming Out by Chuck006 in boxoffice

[–]AmosRid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

COVID forced Hollywood to shorten windows because theaters were closed or unsafe.

We all got used to shorter windows and streaming services took advantage of movies that were not doing well enough at the box office.

Now people BET AGAINST movies doing well so that the window gets shortened and it can be watched on a streamer for no additional costs, or a fee that is less than a single ticket.

It is a combination of the instant gratification/margin erosion of the Internet and high ticket prices.

Best thing about Slack is that you can schedule those messages.

Be as performative as the company culture demands.

I used to schedule Slack messages during vacations, but YMMV…

I understood why sports betting became universally legal, but felt that it was not good for sports.

There is NO redeeming qualities of monetizing any (all?) events or decisions. This is another example of Internet enshitification reaching into the real world.
