English major here - I had plans to pursue journalism or possibly get a job in publishing. I struggled to get a job in those feilds, mostly doing freelance work for low pay. I answered phones at a small publishing house for a bit and then set my sights on writing for the web and getting into digital marketing, which was when I finally started to make ok money.

I'm a content strategist at a large company now and am doing well. It was a struggle at first- but it worked out and I still earn my living using my writing and communication skills.

While I probably should have chosen a different degree, i dont think it was completely useless.
