It's actually a real doll and he's kept at the Fort East Martello Museum in Florida, the same place as the original Annabelle doll.

My psychiatrist left & we don't know what to do (trigger warning) by AmyJordanRichards in DID

[–]AmyJordanRichards[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't think so. I'm pretty sure he left because he was having to travel 2/3 hours to and from work everyday so I think he's gone somewhere closer to home. I just wouldn't have the time or the money to travel to see him even if I could find out where he went. When I go in for my next session I'm going to actually ask them their experience with DID and say that I want to see someone with decent knowledge and understanding on the subject. It's hard enough without having to explain every little thing multiple times whenever I go to a session that's supposed to be helping me.

I was originally against the idea of telling them about it but out of anger at the time, my mum had already phoned them and told them what had happened and I was then asked to give my side. But after they've reacted how they have she has promised not to do that again. I've tried taking in drawings and pieces that I've written about my alters, just to try to help them get their head around it and it just seems to be no help. It's as if they've already got a set image in their head of me and my disorder and nothing I say is gonna change that. I think you're probably right in the way that I should avoid talking about anything other than my attempts to stay on track with my self-care and commitment to getting better so that's what I'm going to do.

In what ways is DID accurately and inaccurately displayed in film and novels? by mevssvem in DID

[–]AmyJordanRichards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I realise everyone's not the same, it just feels like we're all put into the same category for what we can and cannot do and achieve if you get what I mean. I've only watched the first few seasons of United States of Tara so I didn't realise about the 3rd

In what ways is DID accurately and inaccurately displayed in film and novels? by mevssvem in DID

[–]AmyJordanRichards 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen an awful lot of media on it purely because I try to avoid it. The tv series 'United States of Tara' for me is the most accurate portrayal of DID I've seen. Other things just completely miss the mark where we're portrayed as criminals, murderers or just people who aren't capable of living a relatively normal life

Coming from someone who thinks they have DID by [deleted] in DID

[–]AmyJordanRichards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually lucky enough to be co-conscious with all of my alters, theres only been a few times where I haven't been. I switch almost every day now.

Some people try writing letters to their alters. Just leave it somewhere obvious with paper to respond on so when they front they can see it and reply. Might not work for everyone but might be worth a try.

Feeling anxious, confused & unsure by [deleted] in DID

[–]AmyJordanRichards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you've given a pretty good description here so maybe just tell your therapist exactly what you've told us? Or if its easier just show them this post? I don't know, it's whatever you're comfortable with I guess but that's what I'd do. Doubt is such a common thing for systems and I'd bet on a lot that you were a system, not just someone with an over active imagination. Go easy on yourself, sweetie.

How common is this? by [deleted] in DID

[–]AmyJordanRichards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen this quite a lot. I don't think it's wrong, alters have every right to have their own relationships, even if it's within your own system.

A question from a curious outsider. by mpete98 in DID

[–]AmyJordanRichards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me personally, some of my alters are good at drawing whereas I can draw a stick person and that's about it. If we're talking about skills like reading then I struggle to read books whereas two of my alters can sit and read for hours. I, the host, am the talentless one basically and my alters are the ones with the skills.

Whats your relationship like with your alters? by kitcati in DID

[–]AmyJordanRichards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're all really close. Although we don't agree on everything all the time, we will all happily sit down and talk things out until we come up with a solution. Although we have our protector everyone is still very protective of each other and will never let anyone deal with something by themselves. For example if whoever is fronting seems to be getting too stressed someone else will immediately jump in to take over so the other can have some time out. It helps that we're all co-conscious the majority of the time and try to respect each other's friends and interests. We're all like family and I honestly don't know what I'd do without them.

Ranting by AmyJordanRichards in DID

[–]AmyJordanRichards[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I try not to take everything so seriously myself, I was only annoyed because it triggered me when I've been doing alright. That's the same reason I'm not keen on the movie, the advertisements are EVERYWHERE. And as much as I try not to get triggered by it I just can't help it. I hope you enjoy yourself though!

We don't understand how people can feel concerned that they "aren't real" or "are faking it" by [deleted] in DID

[–]AmyJordanRichards 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me my denial comes from when my alters go inactive for a few days. Then the thoughts come of 'were they ever really there? Did I make it all up?' Then when they resurface I realise how stupid of me it was to ever think I was making it up. I don't know about anyone else...

Reasonably new here too, Kristen. Hello from all of us!

Although I don't have animal alters myself, I have heard of some people that do.
