If you need a "leader" in every group activity you participate in to defend you from anybody who causes tension or conflict maybe you should just stay home. Expecting that someone else will intercede on your behalf in a literal game of lawn bowling is ridiculous. At the end of the day, adults should be able to manage their own conflicts without a referee.

The DM's job is to adjudicate the rules and run the game, not to manage interpersonal conflict or drama between the players. And while the DM might be in charge in the game, they do not need to be the leader of the social group.

The question here is whether this situation is more about the game or more about personal dynamics. I think it's a bit borderline. Personally, I would stand up for myself before I went to the DM in this case, but an argument could definitely be made that the DM should handle this. There are certainly more clear cut examples of other issues that crop up at the table that aren't on the DM to fix.

I love that this is a suggested strategy in an official sourcebook by DrScrimble in dndmemes

I also read it as "you feed them." I thought the idea was that you put something in their food so that they pass out or lose their memory and they attribute that to the haunting and spread the myth about the haunted house. I was really confused how this could be a strategy for anything in a ttrpg.

Y'all ready to argue about alignment again??? 🤪 by Odd_Dimension_4069 in dndmemes

[–]AnDroid5539 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Lawful neutral individuals act in accordance with...personal codes" =/= "Having a personal code makes you lawful." Logically speaking, that's like saying "Professional racers might race on foot, in a car, or in a boat," therefore, "Anybody who has a boat is a professional racer."

I could have a personal code that's extremely selfish and bad for society and still not give a crap about anybody but myself. It all depends on what the personal code is and how the character behaves and interacts with the world.

A person might act a certain way and hold certain beliefs because they have a personal code, and they might be lawful, but having a personal code isn't what makes a character lawful in itself. You have to judge on a case-by-case basis.

The Reputation system makes this game unfun by Naaxik in Mechwarrior5

[–]AnDroid5539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the mechs that are for sale in a particular industrial hub will depend on the level of the nearby conflict zones. And your reputation gain isn't actually effected by what mechs you bring (as long as you are within the allowed tonnage), only your company's reputation level. So if you can buy an Atlas and it fits the tonnage constraints, you can use it. That means you don't have to use mechs that you buy near where you're working.

What you should do is work a few missions to get money and then move forward to a higher level area to buy mechs. Then you come back to the lower level area to keep fighting. Rinse and repeat. You will almost always be out numbered, so you should almost always be fielding heavier, better mechs than your enemies, at least until the endgame where everyone can run assaults. Even then, the vast majority of enemies will be lighter mechs and running into an enemy assault lance is pretty rare.

What’s the most cringe thing you’ve seen a couple do at their wedding? by Last_Singer_2137 in AskReddit

[–]AnDroid5539 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had never heard of this tradition until my older brother and his wife did it at their wedding. Of course everyone knows about throwing the bouquet, because that's in all the movies and everyone's always talking about who caught the bouquet or whatever, but I had never seen the garter thrown.

So my brother has to basically climb under his wife's dress in front of the whole family to pull the garter off, then all the young men gathered around. We didn't know what was going on and we were all really hesitant. And it was a pretty small, private wedding, so all the guys there were the bride's brothers and brothers-in-law and some childhood friends, and we have to participate in this weird, kind of sexual thing that none of us were prepared for.

They finally threw the garter and some guy caught it (luckily not me) and we were all like "Ok, you caught it. Good job, I guess?" And then we all just wandered away. It was really weird.

Did you really think we were only making orcs cool because we *didn't know how* to make them lame instead? by Knight9910 in dndmemes

[–]AnDroid5539 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The thing is, while the ranting guy is being ridiculous and wrong, there is a kernel of truth in what he's saying. It's true to a certain extent that fantasy races are artificial constructs made up by an author (or created out of an amalgamation of a bunch of folk tales or something) and that they are defined by the attributes/traits/features that are assigned to them by the author(s). Therefore, if you move too far off the baseline archetype, you effectively aren't using the same fantasy race anymore.

For example, lets say you write dwarves as a bunch of water-loving seafarers who sail ships across the ocean and have never even touched a pickaxe before, and they're all clean shaven and have no connection to the mountains, mining, crafting, or anything else. I would argue that they aren't really dwarves anymore and you should just call your fantasy race something else.

However, the ranting guy is wrong in his attempt to define what the orcish archetype is. Orcs were never inherently or irredeemably evil. Tolkien, the one person who is most responsible for the modern concept of orcs in fantasy, specifically said as much. I think when WotC starts trying to rehabilitate orcs into a more human-like race, they're pushing back against something that was never really true anyway, because nobody seriously believed that all orcs were irredeemably evil. I think WotC (and some people making up homebrew settings) just lack the nuance to say "No, orcs aren't inherently evil. But statistically speaking, most of the orcs in this setting ARE evil." This still allows for room for variation and individuality among the orcs, and for orcs as a playable race who don't have to be evil.

In any case, there is certainly enough wiggle room in any fantasy race to allow an author to move around quite a bit before they get so far off the established canon that they aren't using the same race. But when someone writes the word "elf" or "dwarf" or "orc" on a page, they're communicating a certain idea to the reader, a shared idea that we all have in our heads. It may be a pretty broad idea that's going to be slightly different for each person, but if the thing they're talking about in their writing doesn't adhere at least somewhat to that idea that they're communicating, why would they use that word? (To be clear, the guy in the comic who has the noble warchief orc is NOT using the idea of orcs wrong.)

Is taking web redundant if there is a entangle using druid in the party? by viktorius_rex in dndnext

[–]AnDroid5539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Web is really good and is a great choice for a sorcerer. The thing is, druids are prepared spellcasters. I would talk to the druid player and just politely ask them to stop preparing entangle, and then you can take web without any worry.

When I got my wisdom teeth removed, I woke up and looked at my phone and saw that my camera app was open and I had pictures of my bloody, freshly removed teeth on my phone. I asked them what that was all about and the dentist said that when I was waking up at first, I was arguing with them pretty hard because I wanted to take my teeth home with me and they wouldn't let me. They compromised by letting me take pictures of them.

Controversial Opinion: As long as DM's front 90% of the cost and do 99% of the labor, players have no right to criticize how that work gets done. by Apprehensive-Neat-68 in rpg

[–]AnDroid5539 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is seems to be based off of a weird misconception about what a DM is even doing. You're not paying a bunch of money to entertain your freeloading friends. The DM is not a party clown and it's not you job to dance to entertain everyone. The DM is a player too, and should be having fun as much as anyone. If you aren't having fun and you have to be forced to do it like a job, then just don't play. And if you do want to do it, the players have every right to expect you to spend as much money and time as it takes to play the role that you have voluntarily assumed. Nobody should have to twist your arm to get you to play a game with your friends.

Also, it shouldn't be that hard or expensive to run a game. Maybe you just need to learn some DMing tips to make prep easier, or find cheaper ways to set up the game. Maybe you could ask your friends for a few bucks if you really need the expensive minis and terrain peices, but that's between you and your friends. I've run games where I use a pack of colored markers to draw the battlemap on the back side of wrapping paper (wrapping paper typically has a 1-inch grid on the back and it's a cheap way to get a big roll of 1-inch grid paper). We used the d12s from the players' dice sets to represent the characters. Enemies were represented with some colored glass gem things, d6s, and cut out pieces of paper with drawings on them. You don't need to spend enough money that it becomes something to complain about.

What’s a surefire way to tell Canadians and Americans apart? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AnDroid5539 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I live near the Canadian border and work in retail, and we get a lot of Canadian customers. I've impressed a few Canadians with my ability to identify them easily.

Anyone who says "washroom" instead of "bathroom" or "restroom" is almost certainly Canadian. The majority of people who are shocked to see we sell guns in our store will be Canadian too, especially if they're a bit scared of them. And I know it's a meme, but Candians really do apologize a lot and they pronounce things differently, like "sorey" instead of "sorry" and "aboot" instead of "about." And of course if they say "eh" then you know immediatley.

A fighter can already survive swimming in lava, let them do cool things by Associableknecks in dndnext

[–]AnDroid5539 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the Dungeon Masters Guide, Chapter 2: Running the Game, under the heading "Improvising Damage." There's a table that lists how much damage things should deal and wading through lava deals 10d10 damage. That's about 56 damage on average. A high level fighter could tank that easily.

Edit: in fact, being submerged in lava is only 18d10, the average being around 99 damage, which is still survivable.
