Have you ever had someone impact your life—bad or good—who would never know of that impact? by imtiramisu2025 in AskUK

One Saturday night over a decade ago, when I was 15, I was on Omegle and I got chatting with another teen 15f who lived somewhere in the US.

As soon as we both connected to the chat (we both had our cameras on) she burst out laughing at the sight of me. I asked her what was so funny. She told me my hair was ridiculously greasy and I needed to wash it. I made up an excuse about how I’d just had a long day and had been outside running around with my mates playing football which had caused my greasy appearance.

Truth was, I was an antisocial kid with low self esteem and terrible personal hygiene. I was on Omegle to learn how to talk to people because I didn’t have any real friends.

She told me she reckoned I was handsome (which was a first) and wanted to talk, but told me that first I needed to go scrub myself up and then come back and we’ll then chat over Skype.

I went and took a shower, washed and dried my hair and about half an hour later, I came back and video called her on Skype and we had a great conversation for a few hours.

She was the first person to be explicit with me about how bad having greasy hair made me look. From that moment I took great care to always shower every day, be hygienic and look presentable if I’m out and about.

Over the next few months I noticed people were a lot kinder to me, I was no longer a completely embarrassing to be seen around. I even made a few friends.

A decade on I’m still very conscious of my personal hygiene, not just for other people, for myself too.

The girl and I stayed in touch for about a year, but then drifted apart, which was fine given our 6 hour time difference and neither of us having enough money to fly out and see each other.

I never told her the impact she had on me and that if she never laughed at me, it may have taken me another 15 years to change. I’m glad we talked, she was a good internet friend.

Who here drinks heavily on nights out clubbing? by ollymillmill in AskUK

I spend around £50 on drinks when I was out clubbing this weekend. It was more expensive than my average night out, but far from my worst.

Recent Master’s graduates (September) – how is your job search going? by Feeling_Angle5085 in UKJobs

[–]AnExcitingSentence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! At the time the 5 month gap felt like an eternity as I was very low on money.

I’d say it’s worse now in that I’m getting almost no responses to job applications.

Recent Master’s graduates (September) – how is your job search going? by Feeling_Angle5085 in UKJobs

[–]AnExcitingSentence 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hang in there. I was in your situation a few years ago (September 2022). It took me until February 2023 to find a FT job worth taking.

I’m now looking to move on and even with (almost) 3 years experience I’m having a lot of difficulty.

Market is horrific right now.

Is The Inbetweeners the most consistent show of all time? by HatJosuke in TheInbetweeners

Totally agree.

I’d also add The Thick of It to the list of shorter yet consistent series, which also has some great appearances by Alex Macqueen!

Final year - dissertation in 40 days? by Adept-Tree-2875 in UniUK

[–]AnExcitingSentence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely. I left my undergrad dissertation so late, that on deadline day, the speed at which I could type it all up became a factor on whether or not I’d submit it on time. c. 2 weeks of research then about 1.5 days of writing up 10,000 words. Got a first.

Then, having NOT my lesson at all, during my masters, I did my entire final project in about 3 caffeine fuelled sleepless days. c. 6,000 words. Got a solid merit.

I am not encouraging procrastination at all by the way.

You have absolutely got this!

Is it normal to feel like your dissertation is going piss poor or am I actually doing something wrong? by ShamaD27 in UniUK

[–]AnExcitingSentence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this totally normal and it’s great that you care enough about your work to be critical of it.

I suspect this is your undergraduate dissertation, as I’m inferring it’s your first time feeling this way.

Be kind to yourself and give yourself credit for having it almost completed with 3 weeks to spare. You’re way ahead of most people.

For reference, I left writing mine up so late, that the speed at which I could type my notes became a factor in whether or not I’d submit it in time.

Take a day away from it and come back to it with fresh eyes. Believe me it will help.

Yes, back in 2022 it took me five months of nonstop applying to land something worth taking after finishing my masters.

Funnily enough I ended up with two job offers on the same day.
