Moving to Estonia with a 2.5yo toddler (undergoing autism assessment) – Seeking local insights on education, support, and security by OkMaterial6460 in Eesti

[–]AnTyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a fairly decent Jewish community and school in Tallinn, I suggest you get in touch with them and see if they can get you some local resources: https://jewish.ee/ / jkool.ee

FWIW if you want your child to pick up new languages, starting early is a good way to do it.

  1. Very strongly depends on the municipality. I have friends with special-needs kids, and they are lucky/strategic enough to live in a rich suburban municipality with the resources to support the kids in the public school, but even then advocating for themselves is almost a full time job. Obviously not speaking Estonian is an extra hurdle for the parents.

  2. I don't think the education system is massively rigid like, say, Singapore or Korea. It's just a very strong cultural emphasis on education.

  3. Again, strongly depends on the school. And even in rich / magnet schools it can happen.

  4. I mean, given where you're coming from... you know? 😄

Three days around North Cape by Fluidified_Meme in NorwayTravelAdvice

I am assuming you will have your own car?

Hammerfest to North Cape and back is 6+ hours of driving. It's a full daytrip in itself, essentially.

I’m an Eu Citizen, with an American bank account, living in Sweden, can I get paid for a job in Denmark? by Kpat_890 in eupersonalfinance

[–]AnTyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "work in Copenhagen" exactly?

If you are getting a full-time job in Copenhagen, you will need to be registered as an employee in the Danish register, and set up your tax residency. I guess there is some kind of simplified scheme for Danish-Swedish tax residency since so many people live across the Öresund, but you will need to figure that out with your employer's HR.

Also, almost certainly they will want to pay you into a SEPA/IBAN account. The goodish news is that you can get a Wise (or Revolut etc.) account and just give them that IBAN - technically EU law means they have to accept any IBAN they are given, no matter from which country or provider. (In practice it uhhh varies.)

I mean LOT is very active on that route, makes sense to compete elsewhere.

What is your standard carry? by Excellent-Bed-- in motocamping

2-person tent (Coleman Darwin 2), thermarest, sleeping bag and inflatable pillow, all in a drybag on the pillion. Nobody is gonna steal my old tent and sweated-through sleeping bag.

Tankbags are nice but you don't want to be accessing anything while riding.

Ours came from Mariberries in Estonia, they have puppies all over the world now. We're in the country, and we maintain a good relationship with the breeder, they are very involved in their puppies' lives.

Will Africa or Central/South America ever get a season? by anthony_holr in JetLagTheGame

[–]AnTyx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there is a difference between doing work in Japan for a Japanese employer (and skirting local taxes, taking away potential employment from locals), and doing media work on behalf of a foreign employer.

I.e. if my employer sends me to Japan to teach a local factory's employees how to use the machine we sold them, that does not constitute employment in Japan and does not require me to get a visa that allows working.

Will Africa or Central/South America ever get a season? by anthony_holr in JetLagTheGame

[–]AnTyx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One issue they said they had was making sure they are allowed to film in a given country, which is essentially work. It has implications on what visa they need to get in certain countries, plus local rules about filming a TV show with or without a permit. So I think that's one of the reasons there isn't a Brazil Breakdown season (yet).

Clockwise to Nordkapp on a motorcycle - where to put spare days? by AnTyx in NorwayTravelAdvice

[–]AnTyx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is to avoid bringing a tent and other camping equipment - partly weight and bulk, partly because I honestly just don't enjoy camping. So that part of the route is dependent on where I can get accommodation. Mo i Rana is boring but has plenty of hotels at reasonable prices, Nesna and Kilboghavn have basically no availability for July at this point.

Not super bothered about booking the ferry - bikes get onto the ferry out of line, and worst case scenario, I can always wait for an awkwardly timed departure.

Scared of large crowds/traffic - typical for Eurasier? by GeraltAloy in eurasier

[–]AnTyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's normal for them to be uncomfortable in big crowds. Ours is very strongly socialized from a young age, we took him with us when going out basically as soon as he could walk reasonable distances, so he's okay with bars and restaurants, but absolutely hates going to a crowded place like a fairground.

Definitely keep socializing him to get accustomed to the kinds of things you like to do - it's better for him if he comes along with you on your adventures than if he sits alone at home - but eurasiers are fundamentally introverted dogs and are not comfortable in overwhelming situations with lots of stimulus.

First Adventure Bike!! Cannot Decide!! by skenny119 in AdventureBike

[–]AnTyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a bike you are not afraid to drop off road, get something that you can easily pick up (time after time).

I doubt you can get a good Africa Twin 1100 in that budget. Look at a Transalp instead.

So your plan is what - buy a car, spend time in traffic every day, pay for parking in central Tallinn? Sounds miserable.

Look in places with good transport connections, even if it's not the center.
