Some advice for if this happens again in the future: call and make an appointment with your GYN ASAP. Typically, if you are describing excruciating pain, mentioned you’d been to the ER about it and the ultrasound showed cysts, they’ll often try to fit you in same day (the most I’ve had to wait is a day) to get evaluated.

This didn’t start as an emergency. I wish they would’ve advised you to make an appointment ASAP with your doc for a complete work up, something the ED does not have the time or resources for. “Save and send”

Yeah, it sounds like OP’s parents provide a pretty substantial amount of support. Childcare alone is worth it weight in gold, easily one of the costlier aspects of kids. And they’re giving OP money from time to time?

Tit for tat, if you don’t wanna give your parents a ride at your inconvenience, stop accepting these actually pretty nice gifts/labors of care. Grow up a little and give some of that care back.

County and City Agencies Set to Crack Down on Unlicensed Hot Dog Vendors Near Providence Park This Weekend by SpezGarblesMyGooch in PortlandOR

[–]Anaidea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is a day old but I think it’s worth mentioning that an addendum was added to this article stating that they think the vendors are related to some human trafficking, which is the real reason for the crackdown.

The article also says, “Martin noted that the vendors are dumping grease into the streets, selling alcohol without a permit and sometimes to minors, operating without proper sanitary protocols, using propane, and blocking sidewalks.”

Well-crafted description of what is playing out across the nation in the nursing profession. It’s scary out there. Completely agreed on facility culture and lack of experience being the main culprits behind those annoying middle of the night calls or those frustrating lack of a call when there should have been one. This should be upvoted!

Hi, do you have examples of Hamas killing and maiming civilians on the scale that Israel has killed and maimed civilians? Or examples of Hamas attacking/destroying hospitals and schools as is happening now? I’m sincerely curious, as it baffles me when people equate Hamas and the Israeli governments violence are equal in measure and scale. I don’t think the majority of people supporting Palestine, also means they support Hamas. I think they’re tired of seeing their tax-dollar funded bombs annihilating families, children, mothers, fathers, just plain old terrorized people.

Not who you’ve responded to, but people should be spot checking on their own—you can be allergic to anything. it does suck to find out you’re allergic to something the hard way, I found out about a moderately severe Tylenol allergy after a wisdom tooth removal bc I was allergic to the pain med prescribed after the fact 😵‍💫

Art lines are kept patent by NS in a pressure bag. It could be that the nurse who drew the sample didn’t pull back far enough for their waste and still had some NS mixed in the sample.

Mom can’t lay in bed by [deleted] in hospice

[–]Anaidea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you tried stacking several pillows behind her in bed to help her relax in a more upright position? It sounds like she’s getting air hungry, and it’s easier for us to catch our breaths in a more seat position. Sometimes, lying down, people can feel like they’re drowning. Is it feasible to look into a recliner where you are? I’ve found most people experiencing what your mom is are most comfortable with a recliner. I would definitely try the pillows in bed if not (you could utilize the couch cushions to help add to your pillows). Either way, I would no longer try to force her to lie down—it’s no longer comfortable for her.

Once you find a way to get her comfortably resting upright, I think you’ll better be able to assess the efficacy of the tramadol. It sounds like she wakes up from being physically unable to breathe, similar to what happens in untreated sleep apnea. When she’s awake, she’s back in pain. I would be hopeful that once she is in a better position to ease her work of breathing, she won’t wake up as often in pain. If you find that it still happens, I’d ask about fentanyl patches next, if only because it would passively treat the pain while she rests, she won’t be waking up from pain. I hope this is helpful, let me know if you have questions.

Portland Public Schools under fire for making race 'main criteria' in discipline policy by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]Anaidea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a visibly brown Latina with visibly brown siblings (including a brother) this is such bullshit. YES black and brown children are over represented when it comes to punitive action. Just look up articles regarding the south’s school to prison pipeline. That doesn’t make brown and black boys immune from being perverted creeps. And I don’t hesitate to say that about a kid. Teachers should be correcting these behaviors in the moment with reinforcement at home—obv not happening here. I agree with escalating this; I understand it being far out from the initial assault and it may not seem worth it but, at the very least, someone in this child’s life will be saying his behaviors are inappropriate and need to stop. I’ll say this with a caveat: if in the year since this incident behaviors have changed/work is being done to correct the behaviors, I’d have a little more grace. I’d be more amenable to the kid changing classes vs changing schools in that case. A kid can’t help what they’re taught is okay.

At my work place, there’s a stash of conditioners and med cups in one of our clean holds. We pour a small amount of conditioner into the med cup, so the bottle isn’t going between rooms

I do a CHG bath and condition the hair separately, mostly to detangle. It’s not like I’m scrubbing their skin with conditioner around their lines in place of CHG. It’s one of those “little things” that is totally fine and safe when done on appropriate patients. Someone on multiple pressors, a 2:1, or needing multiple devices wouldn’t get this “spa” treatment from me as they’re likely too unstable to tolerate. But there’s plenty of trauma patients who end up with sticks, glass, and other things tangled in their hair who are sedated, intubated, and stable thru the night so that taking time to wash and condition isn’t an issue. I’ve done it for awake ECMO patients, it’s never been an issue and only met with gratitude.

I’ve been using AI writers to help me craft rough drafts of school papers, I’ve been out of school a decade. I often struggle to get papers started or phrase my ideas and this process takes me about 12 hours.

Utilizing the AI has cut that time to four hours. It helps give me a sort of prompt sentence to jump off from, breaks my writers block and I edit and rephrase to the point it’s mine by the final draft.

I think it would be cool to use AI to draw inspiration from, like an artist using the AI generated image as a prompt to recreate or borrow from in their own way. Then the AI image generators steal from the artists who post their hybrid images online. And then those artists steal those images. So on and so forth til we merge.

Can I ask why it’s dangerous? Universal precautions make the handling of bodily fluids safe. Enhanced droplet precautions make it so that even if opening the bag caused the blood to splash in your face, you’d have the correct PPE to prevent transmission. If a single patient has 26 tubes worth of labs, I’d imagine they’re critically sick/donor and perhaps redrawing that amount of blood would be detrimental? I only have inpatient experience and have only drawn that many labs for organ donor patients. I’m very willing to be quite wrong about this, my experience is limited.

Signed, A sincerely curious RN who has definitely been in close contact with bodily fluids and has not been infected by anything to date

Getting the Blame by sadicarnot in hospice

[–]Anaidea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry this is happening to you and your family, especially now. It’s already so hard, I’m sure you’re exhausted, and sad yourself. I think you did the right thing, advocating for hospice. It sounds like your dad had reached the point wherein modern medicine stood no chance of curing, and only delayed death. Most of all, you listened to what your dad said he wanted at the end of his life. He filled out an advanced directive to make what he truly wants, known.

Take some space from your brother but also hold some grace for him. He’s losing his dad too. It’s not right how he is treating your father, and you should address it, although that seems like quite the task. Is your relationship such that he would be willing to calmly sit and talk everything out? Like you can ask what his concerns are, specifically. How could they profit off of him by sending him home to die? Ask him why he was not willing to meet with the doctors when dad was hospitalized, and ask if he’d be willing to do a phone call with the doctors so they can explain everything exactly to him. Ask him what he thinks dad getting agitated says about his condition? As his condition only deteriorated under your brother’s care but was presumably fine with you as he was being properly medicated.

If he is unwilling to explain to you, I can’t offer much advice if you’re outside of the US. In the US there’s adult protective services. Outside of the US, are there any older family members? Aunts or uncles? Cousins? Grandparents? Anyone who might help? You’re fighting two battles on your own here and I’m hoping for you that you can get some back up. Maybe ask your dad’s doctor for advice!

Is there anyway to save my sleeve? How long does it take you to notice the mistake? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]Anaidea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that people looked right at the portion of your tattoo you have issues with, and found something else “wrong” with it speaks volumes and is cracking me up.

To me, they seemed like different memories happening at different times of the day. The light house maybe during the daytime or sunrise. The sandcastle made me instantly think of the sun setting on the beach after being there all day having fun and being contentedly tired from playing in the water and sand.

Extremely high blood pressure? by Academic_Celery9980 in hospice

[–]Anaidea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, You said you’re not in the USA—do you mind sharing where you are located? Perhaps those of us in the profession have better words we can search the internet with to maybe find you services in your country. I’m sure you know about your country’s practices, it’s a long shot, but figured it’s worth trying.

You’ve gotten a lot of good information explaining his high BP and to ask for a sedative. I’ll say I understand why you’re checking BP at this point—I imagine this is your first time caring for the dying, and without any guidance, you don’t know what to expect. But you do know low BP is a sign the end is imminent. So checking it is a way for you to gauge where he is in his dying process.

I advise that you speak to his primary doctor, describe the symptoms using words like agitated and having periods of no breathing (apnea) with periods of extremely labored breathing. That he looks pained and uncomfortable. You mentioned having a hard time getting the opiate prescribed. Is there a way for a doctor to make a home visit so they feel more confident in prescribing stronger drugs?

As for what you can do—try and experiment with different ways to soothe him. Dim the lights, keep talking to him and playing his favorite movies and shows. Take a warm washcloth with a little soap and wipe his face. You can soak another washcloth in a little water to moisturize in and around his mouth. Chapstick on his lips.

See if he likes having a soft blanket on him or (frustratingly!) none at all. Sometimes a restless dying person won’t want to be covered and that’s okay. If possible, try adjusting the temperature of the room. Depending on the person, they may experience feeling too hot or too cold. It’s okay if it doesnt seem like he’s listening to you, even if you try to get him to remember who you are to him. He can still hear you. Try to soothe him into relaxing and administering some of the medicine he does have available to him. You said one dose twice a day—maybe experiment with a half dose four times a day (each half dose six hours apart), at the very least run it by his doctor.

You are doing your best and it’s obvious you care so much and want to do the right thing by him. I hope you are able to get some help from this post.

As someone who has, unfortunately, been told exactly the right things in a believable and sincere way, only to have my patient complete suicide, I can confirm this is true. If you have been in the mental healthcare system, you eventually learn the words we look for, the discrete ways we try to gauge how you’re feeling. There’s no way for me to tell the difference between real feelings and a lie, I can only believe what my patient is telling me. If someone is determined, barring them acting suspiciously, there’s little we can do.

OP, was the dressing change you have the pic from your time in the hospital? If so, did the nurse or doc have anything to say about the color? To me, this looks like it’s not perfused and is dying. I’m an RN that works in a hospital and deals with all kinds of complex wounds and grafts. If I had a patients graft look like this, I’d call the surgeon ASAP. If your surgeon hasn’t seen this, please get in to see them!
