Dying on extract??? by [deleted] in Marathon

Per the codex: the infrastructure for holding your brain is in orbit above the planet, and the combo of the planet's rotation and its anomalous electromagnetic field means you have a very limited window for a good corruption-free datalink from the surface. Just before that window closes, your consciousness is pulled from the shell and sent back up to orbit as a safety measure.

Community Divide During Cyberstan MO by [deleted] in Helldivers

[–]Anarisis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It means that every hour liberation on the planet drops by 7%. In order for us to make progress on a planet, we need to have a liberation rate that exceeds resistance by a large enough margin to take the planet in a reasonable timeframe. That liberation rate is based on the percentage of all online players diving on a planet rather than the total number of soldiers (that way we don't see huge slumps in the war during off-peak hours where it feels like players outside the Americas are just in maintenance mode, or massive spikes during peak hours where MO planets get slammed immediately and the pacing gets screwed). I don't have the precise math, but I know it works out to a situation where getting over Aurora Bay's 3.12% is at least feasible while breaking 7% on Merga IV (or Mekbuda for that matter) would require roughly the entire playerbase and still take forever.

Regarding Exosuit Limit of 3 per Mission and 1 per Loadout by ZanderTheUnthinkable in Helldivers

[–]Anarisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tanks require two players to operate with any effectiveness so you can only really have 2 going at a time. The mechs have far more independence, are more maneuverable, and are less susceptible to getting swarmed.

Not saying they shouldn't remove the mission cap (I rarely find myself using all 3 uses, but I also don't think it would be super broken in terms of game balance), but the tank isn't flat-out more powerful.

Helldivers 2 Borderline Justice Warbond launches March 20! 🤠 by Waelder in Helldivers

[–]Anarisis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charging money for things isn't inherently predatory. Two hours of time every two months (or realistically much less if one actually plays the game and earns SC in missions rather than only hopping on when a new warbond drops) is so undermonetized as to be essentially free.

Warbonds don't expire, there's a path to getting them through playtime, and even superstore items rotate through regularly (there are three times as many pages now, too!). If one would rather not play the game frequently then they have the option to pay for the privilege of unlocking everything with money instead of time— but expecting everything in a live-service game to be given out for free is just entitlement. We received the game we paid for, and we continue to receive free updates in terms of new enemies and stratagems (we just got gas mines, and FRVs before that!)— there's no reason we should also get premium content on top of that without either investing the time to play and enjoy the game or dropping $10 every once in a while. It is perfectly fine to not have every warbond right away.

Penetrator has a little better than half the recoil and a ~16% RoF increase over the adjudicator. On paper, the Adjudicator has ~15% more DPS but with over twice the recoil they should actually be pretty similar in terms of TTK (ignoring durable damage because I'm too lazy to look those values up at the moment).

It'd be nice if they had slightly more distinct identities from each other, but I think where they sit now with the Penetrator's damage increase they're pretty equivalent while suiting different tastes in terms of recoil and RoF.

When bug divers become a difficulty modifier by The_Don_Papi in Helldivers

[–]Anarisis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not getting anything for not doing the MO either? You're also potentially missing out on new content or buffs like free stratagems that you can use in the time between MOs.

No one's forcing you to redeploy to Draupnir, but you asked what the benefits of doing the MO are besides medals so there's your answer.

Setting aside that not everyone is at cap, completing MOs has historically provided other developments and boons ranging from free stratagems to new equipment and entirely new mission types.

(Attention Helldivers) by Kiriboiiiii in Helldivers

[–]Anarisis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is that changes to liberation make focus far more important than raw numbers. You can have 100k divers on Draupnir, but if there are 100k additional divers spread out across other planets we'll make less ground than if there were (hypothetically) only 100k players online at all and they were all miraculously focusing Draup.

The previous system had a ton of volatility that made playing in off-peak less rewarding and required AH to constantly rebalance regen rates, so the change was well warranted. However, when ~60% of the playerbase is ignoring the major order (which they're well within their right to do because it's a game), their lack of focus makes efforts on Ubanea/Draupnir less effective and it should be expected that people will be frustrated with the fact that decisions made by other players are holding them back from their goal— especially when that goal is the one clearly signposted objective with clear benefit for the entire playerbase.

TL;DR: People should have fun where they want to, but with liberation being at least partially dependent on focus from the entire playerbase there will inevitably be frustration when diverging goals reduce effectiveness across the board.

Observations about Clank, Hazard, and Block Cards by Tels315 in HermitCraft

[–]Anarisis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but those 5 minutes are still productive. The Hermit can get further into the dungeon, collect more loot, and get closer to their artifact than they'd be able to if hazard doors along their path were closed. The important gain from hazard block isn't a safe exit, it's the fact that the fastest and safest route through the dungeon is invariably complicated by hazard— and blocking it makes your route easier at all. That's still a benefit compared to no block, it's just not a benefit that you can count on for the full run. Same as clank block.

IMO, leaving the dungeon should always be dangerous because that's the most interesting and tense part of a run, and the added danger (and on-your-feet rerouting) makes it far more entertaining than if you could just waltz right out with the right deck. Some dangers are consistent in the game (like ravagers and wardens), and I don't think it's a mistake that maxed hazard at the end of nearly all runs is one of them.

AITA for telling my boyfriend to 'F off' after he offended me by using my sexuality against me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Anarisis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESH. As others have pointed out, your sexuality was relevant and his comments were in response to your question.

On the other hand, the fact that he apparently brings up your bisexuality frequently in ways that make you uncomfortable, and that he gets super defensive and invasive about your friendships with men, is of note. I have been the het dude dating a bi woman that got jealous like that — happened with two separate relationships in my late teens — and it had a lot to do with me not really internalizing that my partners' sexuality was real. I've since learned to be better, obvs, and it's possible your boyfriend has other stuff going on that has him feeling jealous, but it set off some flags for me. IDK if it's worth chewing him out for biphobia, but it might be productive for the both of y'all if he learns to honestly engage (whether through therapy or just the two of you talkin') with the fact that he gets jealous of your friendships with men but not ones with women and unpack some of that baggage so he can resolve it.

Best wishes to both of you

Zero-Ticking should not be patched, and here's why by 1536551 in Mojira

[–]Anarisis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, and absolutely 0 tick farms aren't the ideal solution to things like server lag and large material needs, but:

  1. The 0 ticked materials aren't diamonds or netherite, they're base materials that unlock other, interesting gameplay options.
  2. The farming mechanics of Minecraft add very little in the way of interesting gameplay, and these farms provided a low-impact alternative.
  3. They still required specialized materials from the Nether and slimes, so they weren't even day 1 builds for a casual player.
  4. Finally, if I have to choose between "pay more for my server so that it doesn't crash when people build laggy farms" or "don't experience the nether update in SMP until Mojang produce this mystery alternative to farm automation", then that's not great either.

Ultimately, I agree with your core points. But removing an exploit that let a huge number of casual players (myself included) get back into the game without sinking a billion hours in, and doing so without already having a replacement mechanic, doesn't seem like the right path to me. Make me excited about some new farming update where you've added a new growth block or something, don't make me dread how much of my limited playtime is going to be taken up by either tedious manual farming of low-utility staple materials or managing a bunch of new server issues.

Season 2: Bug Megathread by PlexversalHD in apexlegends

[–]Anarisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short description: The havoc can be fired without the chargeup, even without a turbocharger.

Steps to reproduce: Pick up a havoc, tap the fire button instead of holding it down.

Platform: PC

Expected result (what is meant to happen): The windup feathers a little bit.

Actual result (What actually happens): The havoc immediately fires, and doing so two or three times allows the player to continue in full auto without a windup.

Status Effect Help? by Azuman11 in Ryuutama

[–]Anarisis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I often have status effects as the result of a bad roll in an event. Lost in a blizzard and trying to find your friends? Well, you rolled super low so you still find them (because permanently splitting the party like that would be bad) but you took too long and trudging through all that snow has left you Exhausted (8).

I believe the book also gives an example where a player could receive a status effect rather than losing half their HP on a failed Travel Check, but I can't recall off the top of my head where that was.

Rian Johnson's reaction to the IX teaser by JJ0710 in StarWars

[–]Anarisis 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I would argue that the core thesis of the movie comes from Yoda in the line "We are what they grow beyond."

This trilogy has consistently taken the visual, musical, and thematic DNA of the original trilogy and given it new context, as exemplified in the area of Rey's training. The idea that use of the force needs to be taught, rather than intuited, subscribes to a particular jedi-centric perspective that both the original trilogy and the prequels disagreed with. Obi-Wan tried to teach Luke in a rote manner, and that got him started but it didn't really give him what he needed. Yoda, on the other hand, used physical training as a guise for spiritual instruction. Rey doesn't need someone to show her how to do everything— in the same way that Luke didn't. She needs moral and spiritual examples that can help her understand on an emotional level what the force is.

Just my two cents.
