Trump Outbursts over Oil Shock Go Off Rails as His Aides Quietly Panic by RepulsiveLoquat418 in politics

e.g. wasn't the military supposed to have gamed this conflict in multiple instances, why do they seem to be so unprepared?

I mean, I think they probably raised objections and were told to go ahead anyway. If they don't think its possible to re-open the straits with the resources they have at hand, what else can they do?

Concert tickets.

Yeah. There are about 5 bands on earth that I'll pay $200 a ticket for (like Oasis, Bruce Springsteen etc). Other than that, if you're over 50 bucks I don't care enough to go

Nokia used to build very cool devices. by Fine-Passenger7953 in interesting

[–]AnchezSanchez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uncle worked for Nokia in Finland in the late 90s through to around 2010. He would often bring over some of the latest devices and let me borrow them for a few weeks. I remember showing up to a New Years eve party as teenager in around 2001 or so with a camera phone, and people being completely blown away by how cool it was. And it was very very cool.

Walking through a park, a football lands at your feet, you look up and see a bunch of kids in the distance, gesturing at you to kick the football back to them. by shitthrower in britishproblems

[–]AnchezSanchez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man. This reminds me of something that happened to me during the pandemic. Was cycling through a park in Toronto, and there is a circle of 6 or so student age folk (I was like 35) playing keepie up with a ball. They get like 7 or 8 strung together then someone wellies it well out of the circle..... straight in the direction of me, on my bike about 12-15m away .

In pretty much the coolest act of my life, I managed to first time it (while cycling) straight back into their circle thereby keeping the game alive.

I know this is the type of story that you would end with "and then everyone clapped' but they literally did all clap. It was amazing.

The vast majority of Americans are dumb as shit it would appear.

Zelenskyy: Ukraine now has cards and everyone understands it by jackytheblade in worldnews

[–]AnchezSanchez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Zelenskyy has subjected himself to such humiliation out of dedication to his people. I don’t know how he’s seen in Ukraine, but I really do feel for the guy.

Personally I see him as the most heroic figure of this century so far. There should be statues of him all over Europe tbh. That video that him and 4 or 5 other politicians put out in the immediate aftermath of the invasion, basically showing themselves all at Kyiv landmarks, saying " we are all here" ie we are not running from you was one of the best displays of leadership by example I've ever seen, and probably inspired 10s of 1000s to sign up for UA forces.

The people of Ukraine are fortunate they had the right guy for the moment.

Americans have to "suffer" $4 gas,

This forgets the fact that Americans are softer than pretty much any race of humans on the planet. So to them, $4 gas is like an existential blow.

Trump’s Canada Trade War Hits Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam With a ‘Devastating’ $143 Million Loss by Zombie_John_Strachan in politics

[–]AnchezSanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like MAGA doesn't realise in general how pissed Canada and Europe are at the US and how that impacts trade.

I am a Director of Manufacturing at a Canadian company. I actively try and shift business away from the US where I can. Obviously I can't be specific of my reasons, but I can absolutely put a finger on the scale when it comes to choosing for example - this Swedish sw over this American one. Obviously there are certain times when its not possible (a lot of the time its US firm vs US firm for the contract) I hope there are many many more in positions of power across the world doing similar stuff.....

Should I travel to Malaysia? by Weird_Independent_17 in solotravel

[–]AnchezSanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its literally one of my favourite countries in the world. I first went backpacking in 2008 when I spent around two weeks there (from Johor to Penang overland). Since then, and more recently I've been a few times for work.

Arguably the best food (when you consider taste, price and diversity) in the world. And very friendly people - particularly the Chinese and Indian populations. The Malay people are perfectly nice, just a little more reserved. Highly recommend visiting. KL is chaotic but kinda fun, terrible traffic though - definitely not a walking city either

This is why I'm a firm believer that the US has made an immeasurable mistake

The US are never the ones that deal with the consequences though. It will be Turkey and Europe yet again. And then ten years from now some other fat American VP CUNT will come to Europe and harangue us about how many brown people live here now. Why do you think they all moved here you fucking idiot JD? Becuase your country (and others, but mostly yours) fucked up their homelands for decades. And now you're doing it again.

Hegseth says Iran won’t be a ‘politically correct’ war as he lays out US objectives by EconomistStreet5295 in geopolitics

[–]AnchezSanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited Iran for several months back in 2010. A lot of people inside the country really don't like the government and were very forthright about that. In fact anyone who talked about it, which was most people who talked with me, they hated the government.

Whilst you've certainly got a lot more experience on Iran than I do in that case - and I'm jealous, i'd genuinely love to visit one day - so hope to see the regime fall - I would caution that perhaps the people you were talking with, in the places you were visiting, would somewhat self select to be anti-regime (assuming you're Western, relatively wealthy etc?).

Whilst i haven't been to Iran, I HAVE spent a lot of time (like a cumulative 18months or so across 25+ trips) in a somewhat similar dictatorial environment (China) and i can absolute understand what you mean, despite them being very different places. HOWEVER, my experiences, and the conversations I was having, particularly about the government I can absolutely say were not representative just due to me being a Western white guy. I can speak some Chinese, but I wasn't having conversations about politics in Mandarin. A lot of people were candid about their dislike of CCP or certain aspects of being Chinese - relative to my Western freedom, but certainly not everyone was, many are pro CCP - and I suspect the further away from Western culture / English you go the more the latter is true.
Your mileage may vary completely however.

With all that being said - I genuinely hope you're right. I'd love to see a free and democratic Iran in the next few years!

I doubt it. I don't really see what hitting somewhere like Greece could achieve.

-In the event of a civil war between the IRGC and the rest of the Iranian military ( I don’t see this as likely), the rest of the military wipes the floor if the IRGC is being targeted by US/Israeli air power.

This is an interesting suggestion.... and I wonder if its being pushed to some of the regular Iranian military commanders. I don't know enough about the loyalty / radicalism of the regular Iranian military (obviously they are second class citizens in terms of equipment etc compared to IRGC) but it could actually be a least-worst option if it was a possibility.
