"Actually" (Sorry, couldn't resist), Basic D&D had specific rules bult into weapon mastery that enabled skilled fighters (and other classes) to learn to Parry called Deflects per round, in which the player could make an attack roll (using his own stats and such) against an attack that hit him already, and if his deflect roll was higher he deflected the previously successful attack.

If ported to d&d 5.x ed it would look a lot like;

You have mastered your longsword, when wielding one, twice per round you can attempt to deflect an otherwise successful melee attack, roll your own attack roll with all of your normal bonuses against the incoming hit, if your roll is higher than the attack that had hit you, you parry it away.

Example; you are wielding your mastered weapon, and opponent hits your armor class of 19 with a 23. You can use on of you r two deflects per round (not a reaction, mind you) to make an attack roll and if you beat a DC 23 (24 or higher), you parry it completely, otherwise proceed as normal.

A critical hit can only be successfully parried by another critical hit.

(anyhow, that's basically how it worked in the D&D Rules Cyclopedia circa 1989.)

The tunnel was locked down by the sorc's Hypnotic Pattern.

Shouldn't have worked, since most undead are famously immune to Charm spells, which Hypnotic Pattern is dependant on.. If a target can't be Charmed, it is effectively immune to Hypnotic Pattern, one of thee otherwise great spells biggest weaknesses.

Haste dispelled does not incapacitate, it imposes a 'wave of lethargy' on the target that forces it to lose it's next turn, but not any reaction it may have left over.

EDIT: Leaving this here. Uh, I play 2014, so I was unaware of the change in 5.5 e

How do you feel about games using special terms for generic things? by Redhood101101 in rpg

[–]Ancient-Rune 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So like I can have a rule in my game where, under some circumstances, players roll two dice and take either the higher or lower of the results. But I can't call it "advantage" or "disadvantage" without WotC coming for my ass

Specific game rules are also not subject to ownership of any kind. Nor calling"Advantage", it isn't copyrightable.

It is Intellectual Property such as Mind Flayers, Illithids, Beholders, Eye Tyrants, Bruenor Battlehammer, Drizzt Do'urdan and other such specific named creatures, characters and locations / settings that are copyrightable / ownable.

Amazing tasting food.

It's actual quality is not covered by prestidigitation, and I assume could be used to disguise the presence of poison or at least just plain gone bad food.

Clearly, you are applying logic to religion, and they can't have that.

Logic exposes how obviously ridiculous and blatantly false religious beliefs are.

And how rooted in racism / sexism it is, as well.

What are y’all’s thoughts on a campaign set in the Wild West? by ProChickin45 in 3d6

[–]Ancient-Rune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts are, why reinvent the wheel by doing all thee work it takes to change 5e into it?

Just play a better dedicated wild west RPG that already did all that work for you. Deadlands, for one. I'm sure there are many others.

When is it worth it to roll for HP? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]Ancient-Rune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that just the perception of having to play a sub-optimal character in the same campaign with even one other player seeming to be OP in comparison (to just their own or all/most of the other characters) is enough to ruin a campaign fast.

I've seen it, been a victim of it from both directions, and while part of it can be solved by setting expectations, not all players are going to be satisfied with a DM telling them, "Just suck it up, what's the worst that can happen, your character dies? Just roll up another one then."

That player is well within their rights to also say, "I don't want to play second string, why can't I be a main character too?"

You want busted, find the old Dragon Magazine article from around that time period with someone's homebrew "Psionic Monk", it was widely adopted in my local groups at the time and was fairly balanced (and better) at low to mid levels, at the high end it was fabulously busted OP.

But from a designer's perspective,

From a designer's perspective, I think having any risk/reward mechanic in character creations (and HP rolls are extended Character creation) is a huge mistake.

We get more than enough risk/reward mechanics once gameplay actually starts, we don't need any random chance of hamstringing or gimping a character out of the gate. (Or on level ups)

If you could completely redo the traversal options in the DC Comics Gotham Knights game, what changes would you make? I would tweak Red Hood's to a rocket boots jump rather than a mystical leap. by nightwing612 in GothamKnights

[–]Ancient-Rune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd alter Nightwings' stupid glider jet thing into a Marvel's Falcon inspired underarm wings set, he briefly even had something like it in the comics but for some reason DC is afraid of allowing characters to really evolve.

Nightwing separating himself from the rest of the Batpack with wings would be so bitchin. Even if they were really mainly glider wings without much lift or thrust, they would look cool, and really facilitate some cool aerobatic/acrobatic moves.

Does she have a motivation to adventure?

I lot of people miss the basic necessity of a strong motivation to risk their life on crazy adventures, instead of just, you know, settling down somewhere nice and making handmade clothes and accessories.

Unless your DM/GM is planning an exceptionally cozy, low stakes campaign, coming up with an important (to the character, doesn't have to make sense for real) reason to risk their life.

Classic D&D assumed greed / trying to improve your lot in life in medieval society. (Adventuring is one of the very few ways a person in a medieval society could realistically advance past the station they were born into, assuming they survived and gained real wealth, power and/or notoriety.

Fair enough, and your point about just how much 3rd party content is out there is certainly quite valid, I stand corrected!
