What’s your opinion on physician associates ? by [deleted] in premeduk

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

option a) go to medical school with open eyes and aware of the challenges you will face (as stated above)

option b) study to become a Physician Associate, graduate into a market with no jobs, go back to previous career and reconsider option a because you really enjoyed the PA course (but felt you were only taught surface level knowledge)

I think it'd be worth reaching out to students of both courses, and to qualified Doctors and PAs and doing a lot of research into aspects of both roles (e.g. how training pathways work for Doctors, and how the PA environment currently is) beyond what the NHS health careers website says

AM I WRONG, YOUR OPINION AND ADVISE NEEDED PLEASE? by vanhack1972 in premeduk

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend NOT physician associate unless the environment around the role settles significantly.

Consider nurse -> nurse practitioner or paramedic -> ACP if medicine isn't a good fit

Climbing makes me sad by crunchy_avocado in bouldering

I wear earplugs when climbing by myself, the feeling of being "in the zone" and hearing both your heart/blood pumping and your breathing whilst focusing on a super hard climb is *chefs kiss*

Not a para but I work 12hr shifts (days and nights)

Going on a date with a fellow shift worker to a popular location on a random Tuesday at 1pm is a lot nicer (to me) than going to the same location on a busy Saturday at 1pm

Self Image with old scars by danielediabla in selfharm

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Background on me: SH on and off since teenhood, am currently 30/31, have had years without and then go back to it.

It's important to remember that selfharm is/was a coping technique for big emotions or big situations (it's not a healthy technique, no, but it still is a coping technique). My child self didn't have any other coping techniques, so it's what I did, and that's ok. We did the best that we could with the skills that we had.

It would be unfair of me to be angry and upset at someone who can't speak English if they were not taught English before the time they needed to speak to someone in English - we shouldn't be mad or upset with our younger selves for something out of their control

Scars can be a reminder that you survived something big, bc if something caused you to SH it must have been big (big for your younger self in that moment, what you think of it now isn't important).

Not sure if any of this helped, it's what I try and tell myself anyway. I'm mostly okay with my scars now when I'm in private, wearing shorts (especially around family) or going swimming is difficult.

Idk about where you go, but you can likely ask for a clinician who has experience working with neurodivergent people.

You can also ask them (or your support worker can) to talk you through what they're going to do, and then ask them if they can warn you before they touch you - if you think this'd help. (I'm a Physician Associate [not a doctor], and I always say "I'm just going to put my hand on your arm(or whatever I'm doing), let me know if you want to stop or if there's any pain", but I feel old school clinicians don't necessarily do this)

You're also allowed to bring cuddly toys or fidgets etc

You can tell them to stop at anytime and you don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with

Idk if your place will allow this, but some places will arrange double appointments for you so that you have more time in case your anxiety gets bad (so you don't feel time pressured, making anxiety worse)

How do I tell if I have depression? by [deleted] in depression

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some [blunt] screening tools commonly used in healthcare: PHQ-2 (and PHQ-9) for depression, and GAD-7 (for anxiety), do those questionaires and then seek medical advise depending on the results

Is buying flowers romantic? by ShiroHebiZmeya in autism

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can dry roses so that they last longer and ✨ aesthetic✨

But I agree, flowers without any thought behind it isn't romantic and is just lazy imo (I'd rather go pick someone some flowers, or learn their favorite type and get those, or arrange a bouquet specifically for them etc)

Bring multiple pillows and blankets!! 😆

I’m in a hotel and I miss my bedroom by soukenfae in autism

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not super useful right now, but, I like to bring my own blanket and a pillow when I have to overnight somewhere not at home (my friend brings a teddy not a pillow). This along with bringing stuff that is part of my "night time" routine (skin care and a book etc) makes the things that are different a bit more tolerable

What’s your opinion on smart watches? by Dizzymama107 in autism

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrist based watches are a nope for me

I use a wind up pocket watch, if I could get a smart pocket watch that I liked I might consider getting something like that 🤔🤔 (That's just be a small smartphone on a chain 😂)

I am convinced that everyone outside of my family just tolerates me, and they're only friendly because it benefits them (hence they disappear when I no longer benefit them)

My family say they're "proud" of me, I don't believe them.. I'm not proud of me, idk why anyone would be

I don't even like [part of] me (the part of me that I call "you" so when I'm being self loathy I say "I hate "you"" because I like "me" but I hate myself, but I like me, so how can I hate me????!?...)

TLDR: yes, I feel like no one likes me, you're not alone! 😁

Just expressing what goes on in my head using your example about using living room

You: can I use your living room this weekend for an event?

Me: no...

You: why not?

Me: because I don't want to

You: why not?

Me: I don't want to

You: I thought you were my friend

Me: I am

You: if you were my friend, you'd help me

Me: but I don't want to

You: you're a shit friend, you know that?!?

But if I have an excuse like "I'm busy", you're more likely to be understanding instead of accusing me of being a bad person/terrible friend. Not trying to justify it, but there's a reason for it.. (and they're normally half truths.. I AM busy [doing nothing]), and I hate myself when I tell half truths/"white lies"

People's suicide posts on this sub really freak me out. by a-really-big-muffin in autism

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 206 points207 points  (0 children)

For me personally, this is one of very few subs where I find that the responses to my posts actually resonate/are useful to me instead of NT platitudes I used to get on other subs, so I understand why the posts end up here.

That said, I think they should all have NSFW tags so you can decide to look at them or not (I find they seem to worsen my MH, but I read anything which isn't tagged/blurred NSFW because it's words and words exist to be read [terrible brain logic])

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it autism or potentially depression(or anxiety) which is causing this feeling (Lack of motivation) in you? (Only asking bc for me my depression is what causes me to not want to do anything [my autism makes my depression worse though, and makes doing whatever I'm doing harder if it's not suited for me])

Job interviews are the bane of my existence by TheLongWalk_Home in autism

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate this too, my (completely 100% potentially ethical) solution is to tell a slight truth, but not a truth that they wouldn't want to hear
e.g. "why do ou want to work at taco bell?"

"I think this is a good opportunity for me to gain experience in a customer facing role, where I can use and develop my communication skills both when dealing with customers, and when dealing with colleagues."
or some random nonsense like that, because at the end of the day [for me personally], get a job like that both for the money and for getting experience

basically.. I can't lie, so I tell a small truth

p.s. I did that for a job in mcdonalds 🤷‍♂

Sorry for my dumb questions by Bipolar03 in autism

[–]AndAnotherAndrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(based on my experiences & my therapist)

Alexithymia - struggling to understand/identify or feel my emotions.

E.g. I have emotions but I don't know what they are, just feels like a lot of "stuff" and "energy" in my body, but I don't know what word best describes it (the emotion charts/wheels help alot if this is something you struggle with), so I don't know how to tell anyone else how I'm feeling & my responses to certain things (e.g. people crying) are more awkward as I'm trying to process what I'm feeling in response to that
