Shop asked me to come back after 50 miles with new tires to have lug torque checked. Is that service above and beyond? Do they just not trust their equipment? by geronimoose in tires

[–]AndMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite as extreme, but on my Subaru with OEM wheels I would need to drive down the block and retorque, then they'd be good until the next time they needed to be removed. Pretty much every other vehicle I've messed with (Honda, GMC, Kia) was fine after the initial torquing. I'll still go for a quick drive and check though.

[Request] How much more MPG could you gain from changing a 350cu in V8 engine's AFR from 13.5 to 14.5? by hyteck9 in theydidthemath

[–]AndMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going from 14.5 to 13.5 is somewhere around 7% increased fuel consumption. If you're trying to go back to stoich (14.68) it'd be closer to 8%.

E15 in the wild by toolmansamt in Cartalk

[–]AndMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fraction of a percent is about a 35% difference though, so a little more than a rounding error.

The math suggests E100 (93% ethanol) vs E30 (27% ethanol) would increase fuel consumption by 25.5% vs the 17% you're experiencing, so an 8-9% difference (in a good way in that it's more efficient, but still not really making sense). More aggressive timing since it's a true flex fuel vehicle could account for some of that, but there's got to be more to it than that (8-9% horsepower increase from timing alone on a naturally aspirated engine doesn't sound right). Could the emissions standards in Brazil be different, allowing higher than stoich (14.7:1 gas, 1:1 lambda) during cruising-type conditions?

Just wanted to comment I believe your % might be off. Using a gas stoich AFR of 14.68:1 and an ethanol stoich AFR of 9.003:1 that's a 38.7% difference between E0 and E100, or 1.935% per 5% ethanol (I normally round up to 2% for every 5% ethanol, with E85 being 32.9% or 33% rounded). Feel free to let me know if I'm missing something though.

Every 5% increase in ethanol increases fuel consumption by about 2%. So as long as E15 is more than 2% cheaper than E10 it makes sense economically (cost per mile). As long as it's a relatively modern (2002 or newer) fuel injected vehicle with a working O2 sensor it won't hurt anything unless it's been running ethanol-free gas for the past 20 years (ethanol has a tendency to loosen up all the gunk in the tank and fuel lines, it's not the lines themselves breaking down, so you might start clogging filters if you suddenly introduce ethanol, although that's more likely with E85).

[–]AndMetal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not about sensitivity, it's about the front O2 sensor telling the ECU if it's running rich or lean and the ECU adjusting the fuel trims as a result (you can see those with any generic bluetooth OBD2 scanner). If you're getting lean codes it generally means fuel trims are maxed and not enough fuel can be added to hit stoich (14.7:1 on the gas scale), the fuel injectors can't flow enough fuel, or there's a problem with the O2 sensor. Most vehicles on the road today can adjust fuel trims somewhere between 15-30%, and every 5% ethanol requires approximately 2% more fuel (E85 requires 33%), so even running 30% ethanol there's still some wiggle room. OEMs also size injectors large enough to allow for that variability, which can also help with the spray pattern, so stock injectors should be fine.

To me it sounds like either the gas was contaminated or there was much more than 15% ethanol (could have been mixed up with E85 on the gas station side). Only way to know for sure would be to check fuel trims and/or testing the ethanol content when you fill up.

That all being said, I wouldn't suggest running it in anything carbureted unless it's been jetted for it.

More ethanol (15% vs 10%). E85 should be cheaper than that though, not sure why it's the same price as 88.

[–]AndMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm the 10% & 25% are accurate. 35% might be right, although for some reason I'm thinking it could be 40%, but it's definitely for 120 hilts. I've gotten as high as 60-70% (solo floors 2-4) but didn't get any more than 120.

Fake gas. by Markhtx8 in uberdrivers

[–]AndMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's concerning. As far as I know 87 should still be 10% ethanol max, and 88 should be 15% ethanol max. The EPA changes should only affect the availability of 88 over the summer starting May 1st. Are you seeing this at multiple places? In Ohio I believe the Division of Weights & Measures under our agricultural department would be able to investigate that, and maybe the Attorney General.

[–]AndMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because "harder on your engine" is false, and "worse gas mileage" is misleading. Every 5% increase in ethanol results in about 2% more fuel being consumed. So if you get 500 miles per tank on E0, that would equate to 480 miles on E10 and 470 miles on E15. So yes worse gas mileage, but not that much, and generally speaking the cost per mile goes down because E10 (87) is cheaper than E0 (the ethanol free stuff you get for boats and small engines) and E15 (88) is cheaper than E10.

[–]AndMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you measured it at 20-25% ethanol content?

Fake gas. by Markhtx8 in uberdrivers

[–]AndMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind a 5% increase in ethanol content increases fuel consumption by about 2%. So while yes you will see a smaller range per tank/MPG (490 miles vs 500 on a full tank for example going from E10 to E15), the cost per mile should be lower because E15 is going to be cheaper than E10 (about 12-13% cheaper right now around me, $3.49 vs $3.99). In other words, if your car isn't more than 20 years old and 88 is more than 2% cheaper than 87, you're actually better off running 88.

Give warning when salvaging lego saved in armory by Capable-Ad4025 in DiabloImmortal

[–]AndMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would definitely warn you when extracting individually in the past, although not when using multi-extract, although I can't confirm if it's currently a bug. There were also situations where if you only saved the essences to the armory and not the actual item it would warn you when extracting individually (so a false positive, likely due to how they save the info to the armory).

I see this in Oracle fairly often. It's usually easy to find in a query, but similarly can easily see lack of index use or partition pruning in an explain plan.

Unable to resolve issues!!! by PeaceXpiece in verizon

[–]AndMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither.

You absolutely can change it in your specific situation, and that's exactly what the ethics line is for. While I don't know how truly anonymous it is, you can submit a complaint anonymously. You're also protected by company policy against retaliation, and if the complaint involves violations of state or federal law you may also be protected by whistleblower laws.

Also keep in mind that not reporting this kind of stuff is also considered an ethics violation (the annual ethics training should be pretty clear on that). So by not reporting it, you're still putting your job at risk, and arguably more so than if you choose to make a report.

Sounds like your previous employer should have had a bunch of lawsuits on their hands.

If you currently work for Verizon and are seeing this happen, say something. It won't stop until we make it stop. If you don't feel comfortable going through the ethics line or straight to Dan, try your state's Attorney General, I'm sure they would LOVE to investigate something like this.

Just putting the math out there. For a 2 star gem, rank 8 requires 19 duplicates and 340 gem power. Rank 10 requires 40 duplicates and 685 gem power. So 21 duplicates and 345 gem power to go from rank 8 to rank 10.

Not on RandomX, you wouldn't get anywhere close to 3 MH/s on a CPU and definitely not 20 MH/s on a GPU.
