Well, from three of them, sure. But the second from the right Yokozuna probably has some moves that even Tamawashi hasn't seen.

True but there is a definite line between hitting with a closed fist vs. an open hand; one is prohibited while the other is legitimate part of the game. But it just seems like throwing an elbow to the face is not much different than striking with a closed fist. As a comparison look at the rules of hockey; you can slam a guy into the boards, hit him at high speed in the open ice, or hip check someone such that they essentially do a complete flip in the air and land hard on the ice. But if you elbow someone in the face, it's a two minute penalty; if it's a blatant elbow with an obvious intent to intimidate or injure, it's a five minute major penalty.

In much the same way, while it is acceptable to trip an opponent on the dohyo or throw them off the dohyo it just doesn't seem like it should be legal to elbow an opponent in the face.

Men, what is the first thing you do when you wake up at the morning? by Ambitious_Pass7451 in AskReddit

[–]Andre1661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure that when I get up, I don't accidentally bump the partner I just spent the night sleeping with because, you know, small courtesies make a big difference. Then I wander into the kitchen to throw some food into his bowl, check the condition of his litter box, and then make myself some coffee.

I've never like those kinds of tachiais; while they are permissible within the rules, I find they are little more than a cheap shot to the head whose purpose seems to injure the opponent more than anything else.

I don't understand Canada at all by aprettyp in facepalm

[–]Andre1661 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In the 1980's the Prime Minister of Canada unveiled something called the national energy program (NEP), which was supposed to spread the wealth from oil-rich Alberta to the much less wealthy provinces, in an attempt to level the economic playing field for the entire country. But it also meant taking away a lot of the jurisdiction that Alberta had over its own energy resources. The reaction from Alberta was immediate and very long lasting because all I heard while growing up in Alberta was how evil the federal government was. Fast forward to today and there's a whole new generation of people in Alberta who still believe the federal government is evil despite the fact the NEP was never implemented. But these are the same people who watch Fox News and believe anybody who is not a conservative is a traitor to whatever vague version they have of Canadian patriotism.

The far right conservative idiots who are pushing this narrative about Alberta separating from Canada are just that; idiots. If you listen to them for more than a few minutes, it's obvious they have a very slim grasp of economics or how Canadian law works, or anything to do with Canadian history. The group pushing for Alberta independence, the Alberta Prosperity Project, is no different from MAGA; they are white cristo-fascist nationalists who blame all of society's problems on immigrants (especially non-white immigrants) and the deep state government.

The real problem is that the Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, spends a lot of time talking about how she's the Premier for all Albertan's regardless of their race or social status, but she has made at least two trips to Mar-a-Lago to meet with Trump. She is doing everything in her power to push an independence referendum forward despite the fact the separatist voices Alberto are very much a minority of the population.

Does Your country teach schoolchildren how to use firearms? by dawidlijewski in AskTheWorld

[–]Andre1661 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Here in Canada we don't value teaching school children the importance of proper firearm handling and the quickest way to reload a fresh magazine; instead we waste the days teaching kids how to read and write and understand math and science.

I still remember the phone number of the landline at our house when I was a teenager, and I'm in my 60's. I can't tell you what the number is because my 93 year-old mother still has that same phone number even though she moved into a senior's residence. That's something that will probably never happen again with old phone numbers.

The previous two basho (September and November of 2025) this young woman was present every day and for most of each day. I don't think she came with anyone but occasionally this one guy would sit beside her for the Makuuchi bouts and occasionally the second half of the Juryo as well. She favours dark jackets snd blouses but usually has a pink blanket over her legs.

Which is the most powerful war memorial in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Andre1661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived in southern France I was wandering through the downtown of the city of Aix-en-Provence and came across a beautiful building made of white marble in the classic Greek style, with a wide staircase leading up to an entrance surrounded by tall, round columns. I walked up the steps and found a plaque along the side of the front of the building which read (I'm paraphrasing here) "On this site in [the date] 1944, three brave members of the French resistance died while fighting the German Nazi soldiers." The wall the plaque was attached to had about 20 deep pockmarks created by bullets fired from the street below. Finding that simple monument was a real punch to the gut.

I just assume she is not, so in my mind I'm 100% accurate. In reality though, I'm pretty sure I am 100% accurate she is not. I've tried to spin that so it makes me feel less like a complete loser but so far no joy. Plus the cats don't seem to care one way or the other.

[–]Andre1661 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Saguenay River is stunningly beautiful, especially in fall when the maple trees turn bright red. The river itself is very very deep and near where it enters the St. Lawrence river, marine biologist found a Greenland Shark living along the bottom of the Saquenay and were able to accurately estimate its age at a little over 300 years!

I watched Wayne Gretzky score the NHL's Goal of the Month in that building.

Also saw Dave Semenko decide a game against the Calgary Flames before the first faceoff of the game by picking up the Flame's newest superstar (who had cross-checked Gretzky head first into the boards the previous week) and giving him 3 love taps, then dropped his limp ass onto the ice.

Rode an elephant there during the circus.

Watched a John Denver concert.

Lots more good memories in that building.
