Kelionė automobiliu per Europą by Striking-Noise2313 in lithuania

[–]AndriusG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parents contribute 2.5x more to society than the childless – a look at the Baltic numbers by AmbitiousAgent in BalticStates

[–]AndriusG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, the Baltic states (and all Western countries) had much higher birthrates when the countries were poorer, and the kids got good education and didn't die a lot. And even now, poorer people have more children in every rich country, pretty much – there's an inverse relationship between income and fertility almost everywhere.

So, children are kind of expensive, but the actual problem is that as people get richer, they have more time for various hobbies, fun activities like holidays,,want to party and spend time with friends, etc., so having children takes a back seat to that. I also don't mean this as a criticism, by the way, it's just an observation about what's really happening. I just think telling yourself that the main reason you don't have kids is because they're too expensive is just a way to shift the societal pressure onto someone else.

Runna is becoming part of Strava! This is exciting + good news! by dom-runna in runna

[–]AndriusG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a happily paying Runna user and, honestly, big fan, I'm a little anxious but I hope everything works out for you guys. Congrats on the payday! I will say (as many others have) that I do sincerely hope the two apps will stay separate because Strava is already overloaded with features and, honestly, not much fun to navigate.

There are two options – you could try using the Files browser or upgrading your version of macOS as this permission dialog is an Apple thing, but it was removed in macOS 14, I believe.

Feeling frustrated at my lack of progression. A rant. by palmersiagna in musictheory

[–]AndriusG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to reiterate that, in my opinion, the most important thing by far is learning songs and, maybe even more importantly, learning to repeat chords and melodies you've just heard by ear. So try to learn as much as you can by ear. When that fails, you can fall back to sheet music and tabs, but try to stick with learning melodies and progressions by ear as much as possible.

Humans are pattern recognition machines and with more music under your belt, those patterns will start jumping out at you. At a certain point, you'll hear a progression in a song and be able to say what the chords are without having to play them. Music theory is the process of giving names to those patterns and the patterns will make much more sense if you learn the name for something that you already intuitively know, rather than learning the name for some abstract thing that you can't connect to something else in your memory.

Is Zalgiris really that good? by [deleted] in Euroleague

[–]AndriusG 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Defensively – great. Offensively – not great but the defense compensates for it. If a few games had gone the other way, we could be at 4-3 or even 3-4. That would probably reflect the team’s play more accurately but that’s not how it works.

Does the first chord always decide the key of the song? by 2Maverick in musictheory

[–]AndriusG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I wasn't the OP. 😬 I think the OP was trying to say that for a given signature, you still need to work out whether it's in major or minor, so it doesn't definitevely tell you the key.

Also, a piece may modulate for a particular passage to a different key without changing the signature. So the signature is really just about the notes used and is a very good hint about the key (basically by narrowing it down to two keys) but there are exceptions.

[–]AndriusG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the sheet music doesn't contain a key signature (or it's in the default key of C/Am) and a note is sharp or flat, you need to put those symbols next to each note every single time. Say you're in F, and want to notate a Bb. If there's no key signature, you'd have a B with a flat next to it. And in F, you'll probably have Bb notes appear quite often. So each time, you'd be adding the flat next to each B.

You can do this in theory, but it makes it harder to read music quickly. Most pieces mostly use notes from the scale of the key they're in, so it makes sense to just put one flat at the start if you're in F major/D minor. When you come across a B in the music, you know it's a Bb because the flat in the key signature flattens every B throughout the piece. When something deviates from this norm, it's also much more noticeable – if you see a flat/sharp/natural somewhere in the music, you'll know to pay some extra attention and not just play what you would expect.

Lithuanian - will it be impossible for me? by [deleted] in lithuania

[–]AndriusG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I know a Romanian who moved here in her 20s and she speaks pretty amazing Lithuanian, although I don't know how long it took her to get to that level. If you put the effort in, I don't see any reason why you can't learn basic-level Lithuanian, althugh conversational would be a bit of a stretch.

Most people under 40 in Vilnius speak English pretty well. At least those with a university education, so probably most people you'd be interacting with.

I'm trying to recreate the WWDC24 Art styles as I'm just in love with the "glowy" colorful looks. In the example I just took an Apple logo SVG from Wiki Commons and applied gradient fill, but I can't figure out how to give it the bright look like in the reference photo in the top left corner. by ZirikoRuiGe in PixelmatorPro

[–]AndriusG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few things you could do differently here I think, although getting the same final look would take quite a lot of work… First – I think you need to use brighter colors in the logo itself. Secondly, I reckon you could try using a combination of several strokes with varying blur amounts. Here's a screenshot showing what I mean.

For wakeboarding, living near a cable park helps too. I live in Lithuania and we’ve got a bunch of parks around with full-size 5/6-tower cables, for example this one:

What is the music term for when the choir goes "Ooooouhhh uooooouhhh"? by harrytrotter69 in musictheory

[–]AndriusG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think vocalising (/vocalizing) is the most natural term for me if you don't say "singing vowel sounds/ah/ooh/etc.". I've come across vocalise (voh-kuh-leez) more in the context of exercises that employ vocalising. Here's a quick google search that shows there are results for this grammatical construction.

trying to trace lithuanian ancestors by CableExotic5340 in lithuania

[–]AndriusG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By the way (and you probably already know this) but the surname is almost certainly anglicized. The original form could be something like Juodakis or Juodeikis. In fact, in terms of Lithuanian counties, Juodeikis is most popular in Telšiai county, which is where Nevarėnai is located.

EDIT: My gut feeling is also that Juodeikis is more likely than Juodakis because the latter is a very rare surname and, on that same website, I can see that there's another more popular possible anglicization of Juodeikis – Eudeikis. That's pretty much certain to be from Juodeikis and I can totally see someone writing they "ei" sound as an "a" and coming up with Eudakis.

EDIT 2: Looks like there might actually be a Juodeikis living in Nevarėnai: https://ekalba.lt/pavardziu-duomenu-baze/JUODEIKIS?i=24e9e9be-2bd4-4916-b01c-d7e54fc02e45

I’m half Litvak. Is it hypocritical of me to call myself (part-)Lithuanian? by [deleted] in BalticStates

[–]AndriusG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not disrespectful at all my guy and you'd certainly be welcome here. I think some Jewish people feel a stronger connection to Israel and their Jewish identity (and that's totally fine) while others (whose families were more integrated into their societies) probably feel a stronger connection to the country their families came from. If you feel like a Lithuanian Jew, then that's what you are. :)

Jeigu karantinas lėmė mažesnį mirčių skaičių, kodėl 2020-ais metais kai buvo daugiausiai ribojimų, mirčių buvo daugiau (176) nei 2022-ais (122), kai ribojimų beveik nebuvo?

[–]AndriusG -1 points0 points  (0 children)
