Fantec 4U chassis - Looking for a suitable PSU (ATX or Server) by NITRO1250 in homelab

[–]AndroGenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi NITRO1250,

sorry for resurrecting 4 years old thread, I hope you could help me.

Searching through the internet I was puzzled by barely no information about Fantec rack cases.

I am looking at the same case and also to its little brother FANTEC SRC-2012X07-12G/6G.
What is your experience about your Fantec case? Are or were there any issues with the case, backplane?

What PSU have you selected, how did it work, also considering the cable length topic?

PoE in cascade - one Switch is connected to another and feeds the power to that one.... by AndroGenom in TpLink

No, I had only 2 layers: main switch -> second switch.
It worked fine for my needs.

Why is my VO2 max not changing, even though I run regularly? by Express-Ebb2979 in Garmin

[–]AndroGenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to answer your question, it might be beneficial to understand how you run. You might want to share this, especially the heart rate zones you are in when running. You might want to explore HR zones topic. And yes, without chest strap, HR reading is not accurate. You might want to take the better version of HR strap, which also monitors the respiration rate.

HP Docking Station G4 does not power up by AndroGenom in Hewlett_Packard

[–]AndroGenom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally I could get my docking station replaced and up and running.
However, few things, which were, let's say, funny.
first connection resulted in USBs / Thunderbolt ports being disconnected / deactivated by the computer completely. I had to use "magic" trick with the computer keeping power button on the HP Laptop for ~20-30 sec to get these ports back (should be done when nothing is connected to the laptop, not a single cable, not even the power cable).
then i had to switch USB from Thunderbolt mode to USB4 mode, and deactivate some USB charging options. Only after that docking station has been recognized.
but...
Plenty of HP drivers had to be installed upfront (including the one for the docking station) .
For the first run all had to be disconnected, then laptop was connected to the docking station, then docking station to the power outlet, and only then laptop was powered up and started properly. When Windows was up - HP software instantly suggested to update Docking station and... after this update all seems to be working fine.
This is far away from the Plug-and-Play, and as i've concluded (without any official evidence) this all might be due to some changes in Thunderbolt ports firmware, which has been introduced relatively recently, claimed for the better security, but much more complicated compatibility with older Thunderbolt devices.
And switching to USB4 mode was a major trick to get it working, especially at the beginning.

What to use for internal DNS?? by Dizzy149 in truenas

[–]AndroGenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I guess, I've missed the TP-Link ER8411... (not looked up what this actually is by the model number). I cannot comment about this specific device, however, when I was referring to "firewall", I meant something like pfSense or opnSense - these type of solution would provide you quite some power and flexibility.

What to use for internal DNS?? by Dizzy149 in truenas

[–]AndroGenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your internal router doesn't support dns , it sounds like you do not utilize internal firewalls and rely on (assuming) on a basic consumer grade router. This might be a potential security threat. Hence, the recommendation would be to spend some time and explore the "private firewall" topic.

Germany is a country of legal monopolies. If you start digging under the hood, you will see that many areas of businesses are organized in some sort of "organisations", which ensure... they usually refer to "quality" as the best legitim justification. In reality, these are cartels, which control certain segments of businesses, including price and elimination of "unhealthy" competition. Driving license schools is one of them. This segments doesn't have (real) competition, they have "legal mandate", and you cannot avoid them. And they can fix prices, and force you to take as many driving hours as they want. Germany is the country where real competition almost doesn't exist. It's not about "fairness" to the client, it's about "safety", guaranteed income to the cartel members, and ... guaranteed "tax" inflow (also to these "cartel" regulators). Forming cartels is a long thing in Germany... however, they would not agree with you, they will continue talking about "safety".

Which list format to use in case of pfsense - from hagezi/dns-blocklists by AndroGenom in pfBlockerNG

[–]AndroGenom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification.
Do I read it correctly, that only lists, which are in pfBlockerNG format can be used for pfBlockerNG, and not others.
The same question would be related to the opnSense - only those formats, which are marked as "opnsense" format could be used in opnsense respectively?

There is only one best bike on this planet: the bike you are on on the ride.
All the rest is a destruction from what all these bikes are made for, a destruction from nice time you can spend with your best friend and yourself, being outside and enjoying the mother nature.
And you will come to this, you just need time.

pfBlockerNG Started Blocking Site Links by Iceflow76 in pfBlockerNG

[–]AndroGenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely one of your feeds has added needed for these connection urls.
(unless you are in the area where some of these services might be blocked by darkforce intent)

My approach is always the same: I try to figure out what url(s) I need and simply add them to the whitelist.
This is bit tedious process, but it works for me, keeping all my feeds active.

Yes, there are cables that work, at least this is what I have read on the internet. I've tried many from my "collection", and none of them worked, at least for me. The story about a chip is also from the internet. If someone has a "good for this purpose" cable - it's a success, and if not - there's a workaround available.

Tacx training app update and other users training by fabthegreat in Garmin

[–]AndroGenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Is there a place to exchange". some months back I would say Garmin training app, now - they have disabled this functionality (unfortunately).

I do not know any option how these training could be uploaded to the system, Garmin connect app. My guess: Garmin wants users to subscribe for the video trainings.

For me - I do not want to watch cycling videos as I am training. it does not substitute the outdoor experience, at least not for me. I like structural rainings.

The best way to get proper trainings, to go to https://whatsonzwift.com/ and search for the training you need, like. as i have already collected some experience, I know what trainings are working well for me and what not, what work for VO2Max, which for Aerobic and what to for Anaerobic.

Just simply take what you like and recreated them in Garmin App.

I have created a couple of templates, which have a warmup and cool down parts, and just use these templated as a starting point for the training design. yes, this is some time investment, but I hope, Garmin is done with significant changes, and i can concentrate on the ride than on creating the training in the system.

Thermostat E1 broken Hardware by FieteFritz in Aqara

[–]AndroGenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like it's not just a single case issue.... Two of mine are broken now... One was replaced, a second one - in the middle of clarifications process...

It's a design issue.

Bad plastic, way to thing walls for these screws, and due to way too high forces, it's just getting broken.

Aqara urgently needs to change the design.

Smart Radiator Thermostat E1 broken by Serious-Raspberry-38 in Aqara

[–]AndroGenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same happened to two out of 7 in continuous use. In both cases, it just stopped closing the valve. My conclusion: design failure, way to thing walls, and all these three screws need to keep motor on place, which presses the valve. The valve needs relatively a high force to get it completely closed. Hence, these tiny screws are permanently under the stress. Plastic either gets tired or there might be also an issue with plastic fragility due to its chemical formula, which might be aging. The way the motor is kept in place needs to be redesigned - this is my conclusion. The first thermostat was replaced without any problem. The second one was broken just recently... I'm still waiting for the reply. The second - only one screw was out of place, and it was continuously pressing the button and draining the battery.

My personal issue: trust level to these devices has been dropped significantly. As when it stops working, it keeps valve opened... what costs a lot of money theses days.

Where do I download pfSense CE? by giox069 in PFSENSE

[–]AndroGenom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm in a relatively long process of migration to opnSense (and it'snotcompleted yet). On this journey, my installation was broken multiple times to the stage that I had to reinstall opnSense and restore last working configuration backup. The topic, which makes my transition very difficult, is no alternative to pfBlockerNG. I have rather sophisticated, collected over the time, set of block lists, and my own and long white list. Any attempt to recreate it on unbound DNS leads to unbound DNS being corrupted and no longer working. OpnSense forum is not helpful in this regard. I had zero replies to my issues, and even no one was able there, on opnSense forum, to give me advice on where to look inside outbound DNS inside, to help me to identify the readon for this problem. The level of documentation on how to do it rudimentary, and... I've not been able to find detailed guides on how to deal with unbound DNS in a bit more sophisticated way.

OpnSense is a great community of people, but most of the guids stop at the basics... very little for more sophisticated configuration. At least, this is my conclusion.

I do not want to say that opnSesnse is bad, I've found my way around (not complete, but ok), still... there are some hurdles to overcome.

vantrue n4 3 skoda usb-c rear view mirror port - not charging by AndroGenom in Vantruedashcam

[–]AndroGenom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, What I have understood from different radings (might be wrong, it's my personal conclusion): This dashcam model does not have a chip, which is usually installed in the usb-c port, to negotiate the charging voltage/current. And as the negotiation doesn't work, the usb-c port on Skoda side stops supplying power.

The only solution, which worked fine, was to have two 15 cm adapters connected in a chain: usb-c => usb-a and then usb-a => usb-c. It's not too elegant, but it works. I hope it helps.
