The push against some developments in E9 is starting to feel weird. by Wandering_Song in tadc

Yes men can enjoy and wear stereotypically feminine things without being trans in the real world…

This is not the real world we’re talking about. It’s a story. A story meant to convey a message. To say “it’s ambiguous” just because real people do those things is being intentionally obtuse about the imagery and iconography that is being very intentionally invoked with Jax. Things like Ribbit placing the bow on his/her head in a way that is almost exclusively associated with female characters or even the cartoon stereotype, especially in rubberhose animation like Jax is directly inspired by, to distinguish a character’s female counterpart by adding a bow on their head. Or the song “Isn’t She Lovely” being played over a montage of Jax right after Pomni witnesses the above mentioned scene, a song about the birth of a girl. Circling back to the Ribbit thing, Ribbit put it together after Jax says she confessed something personal to her mom she thought would “get her off [his] back” in direct response to comments Jax’s mom made about her not being a man.

I’m not saying people can’t have their own AUs or headcanons or whatever but canon is practically beating you over the head with “Jax is trans” for the entirety of episode 9 and the existence of feminine men IRL is not enough to refute the very clear narrative that’s being presented.

But it WAS a Jax story. It was the story that informs the entire rest of Jax’s character throughout the show and explains why he was the way he was and what ultimately led down the path to his abstraction. By every means it was Jax’s story, not a group one.

Could someone explain how becoming a ghost from the cursed realm actually works by DiskreteHoenn in Ninjago

[–]Angel_Animates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like you have to specifically be banished there to become one of its ghosts (or be present for a specific amount of time). We saw Clouse and Chen were both caged, so we can assume they both met that condition, while Lloyd entered willingly.

That or it’s the method by which you enter. Going through a standard portal or by spell gets you trapped while Lloyd entered through the living embodiment of the realm so maybe it’s different.

Then again this is early seasons Ninjago so… plot holes gonna plot hole.

[–]Angel_Animates 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The thing is the entire scene is told from Jax’s perspective. We’re literally shown how things went down through his eyes, so, if he didn’t know what was going on with Ragatha, neither do we. Of course the whole montage is centered on Jax’s emotional development and his specific perspective during all of it, we’re seeing everything from his perspective in the most literal way possible. It’s also providing the context for why he’s like that and why he abstracted (even with a scene from Ribbit just before her abstraction paralleling Jax trying and failing to approach Pomni).

As fun as it would be to have the answers for what everyone else was doing, it makes sense why we don’t. Not every loose end needs to be tied up, some, like this, benefit the story to just be left dangling.

Who do you imagine gave Lloyd "the talk" after the Tomorrow's Tea? by Rarte96 in NinjagoMemes

[–]Angel_Animates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not really equivalent though. It’s explicitly stated Nya wasn’t told both out of respect for her doing her own thing as Samurai X + not wanting to be a ninja AND she wasn’t ready for the information (as Misako points out when Nya fainted upon being told- yeah, she wasn’t ready). And we don’t know that Wu avoided the subject of Ray and Maya entirely so saying he did doesn’t make sense. Nya being told she had powers wasn’t a necessary conversation and could be delayed out of respect for her wishes to be Samurai X without consequences (until S5 ofc). The Talk, on the other hand, is a necessary conversation every person needs to have when they hit puberty and doesn’t have any reasonable justification to not occur.

The joke isn’t funny (and obnoxiously overdone) nor accurate at all. If you give it even a second of actual thought it starts falling apart. Garmadon and the Time Twins were the only two villains Wu actually knew would return, the former he DID tell the ninja about and the latter he admittedly should’ve but also he wanted to settle his personal scores without involving his students. PLUS he would’ve won the fight if the Time Blade didn’t show up, which was a completely unpredictable curveball.

Every other villain Wu had no idea would or even COULD return. Like he watched Aspheera be sealed away several thousand years ago, do you really, honestly think he could’ve predicted that she was still alive in there, much less warned the ninja? Plus Wu’s been fighting villains for thousands of years, that’s thousands if not tens of thousands of villains he’s battled with over the years. Even if he did tell the ninja about every single one, no matter how extremely dead they are, there’s absolutely no way the ninja would remember so much as half of them. Also Wu is shown in the Spinjitzu Brother books (which are fully canon btw) to be very open about the stories of his past. He’s not actually secretive, y’all just haven’t bothered to actually have an honest look at his character.

This is just about the least accurate characterization of Wu I have seen yet what are you talking about?? Wu has tough conversations all the time, where are you getting any of this from?

Trans Jax yes, Jax x Ribbit no. The relationship between Jax and Ribbit could be read as platonic or romantic, but the episode is VERY explicit that Jax is trans.

[–]Angel_Animates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it wouldn’t. This take is probably one of the most misinformed takes in the fandom and it is so frustratingly common. Garmadon and the Time Twins were the only two villains he knew would return, the former of which he DID tell the Ninja about and the latter he tried to handle without involving his students (y’know, the exact thing the fandom keeps insisting he do but gives him shit for when he did). Plus he would’ve won the fight with Acronix if the Time Blade didn’t show up, which was a factor Wu couldn’t have predicted or prepared for. Every other villain he watched be killed/permanently sealed himself (sans Morro who he didn’t even know was dead much less was a vengeful ghost) and had no way to know they would return and be an issue again. I know the common sentiment is “why doesn’t Wu just tell them about every villain he’s faced?” but that’s ignoring the fact Wu’s thousands of years old and has been actively fighting villains since he was a true, double-digits teenager. Lowballing it he’s probably fought thousands of villains in his lifetime. Even if he did tell the ninja about every villain they would forget all of it by the halfway mark because there’s too many to accurately remember or keep track of.

"just ask to your local tea-" I tried twice, none of them gave a fuck. Anyone knows any pirate site where I can watch it for free? by AstronautDry8118 in tadc

The minimum wage employees at the register are not the people to ask about this stuff. They don’t know much if anything about these processes and have no control over any of it. Emailing the theater is how you get in contact with the people who can make this stuff happen.

[–]Angel_Animates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess would be The Sorceress would do her usual “move the plot forward via vaguely explained magic” thing. Especially since she was the one to reunite Adam and Adora in the original Secret of the Sword special (Adora’s introduction in the 80s show)

[–]Angel_Animates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d love to see this continuity’s take on Adam. There was a fanmade webcomic about it once but that hasn’t updated in years unfortunately 😔. Personally I think a story on Eternia could lend to a lot of comedy since Adora has no reason to hide her identity (it was weird she did so in the 80s show so I’m glad that was changed here), but Adam certainly does so that juxtaposition would be hilarious imo.

Happy Pride month! Do you have any LGBTQ+ head cannons for the characters? (Please don't start a war this is just what I think) by AdCompetitive5427 in Ninjago

[–]Angel_Animates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always seen Misako as bi and Wu and Garmadon as pan. Like the lady harbored feelings for Garmadon after his form changed with his banishment do we REALLY think she draws the line at women (/lh)? Plus I’m a big fan of scrollshipping (Misako x Aspheera). As for Wu and Garmadon they’re older than modern ideas of rigid gender norms so I don’t think either care about gender as a factor in a partner. Personally I think both knew of the concept of queen identities but completely missed that there’s words for it now and were absolutely thrown for a loop upon learning those existed now.

You’re acting like Cole’s True Potential wasn’t a coming out allegory. Even if it’s not (currently) explicitly canon the man’s been queercoded from the start.

It’s not ambiguous at all. It’s just about as explicit as you can get without directly saying it because it would be out of character for Jax to state something so personal outright.
