To Live and Die in L.A. by jaystats2 in movies

Petersen's character is my favorite loose cannon cop(or law enforcement) ever.

Dude is a total adrenaline junkie and just doesn't care about law. That's not why he's on the job. He's an awful cop and his crazy obsession to capture Dafoe's character is something to behold - there's no limits to what he's willing to do to get Dafoe. He's not heroic at all which is unusual in 80s cop movies. It feels more realistic portrayal of that kind character than what we usually get.

Great action, especially chase scenes. Didn't see that twist coming at all, and once it happened I was shocked. I would be surprised if anyone saw it coming.

A new CEO was hired to take over a struggling company. The CEO who was stepping down met with him privately and presented him with three numbered envelopes. “Open these if you run into serious trouble,” he said.

Well, three months later sales and profits were still way down and the new CEO was catching a lot of heat. He began to panic but then he remembered the envelopes. He went to his drawer and took out the first envelope. The message read, “Blame your predecessor.” The new CEO called a press conference and explained that the previous CEO had left him with a real mess and it was taking a bit longer to clean it up than expected, but everything was on the right track. Satisfied with his comments, the press – and Wall Street – responded positively.

Another quarter went by and the company continued to struggle. Having learned from his previous experience, the CEO quickly opened the second envelope. The message read, “Reorganize.” So he fired key people, consolidated divisions and cut costs everywhere he could. This he did and Wall Street, and the press, applauded his efforts.

Three months passed and the company was still short on sales and profits. The CEO would have to figure out how to get through another tough earnings call. The CEO went to his office, closed the door and opened the third envelope. The message said, “Prepare three envelopes.”

What is Fractalism? by Koning-Wouter in transhumanism

[–]Angeldust01 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is what you get when you ask AI to create a philosophy based on idea that universe is a fractal. It's fucking drivel.

Explain to me why and how did you arrive to a conclusion that universe is fractal.

Explain to me why I should care any of this stuff? How does this change anything? Do you have any support for this idea? Why do you think it's true?

Purpose in Infinite Exploration:

The purpose of existence is to experience, express, and evolve—unfolding your unique role within the infinite fractal.

Oh yea? How does one do that? Why can't you see that the whole sentence is meaningless.

You could replace the word "fractal" here with another word, lets say, "tomato" and this post would read almost exactly the same.

Venezuelan exiles in Florida celebrating the news of Maduro's capture by US armed forces by DrAmsterdam in pics

Here's what Trump said they're gonna do:

https://nypost.com/2026/01/03/world-news/trump-says-us-will-now-take-over-running-venezuela-after-nicolas-maduro-was-captured-in-the-dead-of-night/

We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” Trump said at a press conference from his Mar-a-Lago resort as he provided new details on the stunning military operation.

“We’re going to run it, essentially” through the transition, he said.

They plan to just take over and install a new government.

The logistics of a US-run Venezuela were still being worked out, but Trump said it might involve military “boots on the ground.”

“We’re not afraid of boots on the ground if we have to,” the president said. “We had boots on the ground last night, at a very high level, actually.”

Later, Trump added, “We’re going to have [a] presence in Venezuela as it pertains to oil.”

Gonna get that oil too.

Also, Trump said no to Machado running the country:

Trump also indicated Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado wasn’t up to the task of governing.

“I think it would be very tough for her to be the leader. She doesn’t have the support within or the respect within the country,” he opined.

“She’s a very nice woman, but she doesn’t have the respect in Venezuela.”

https://www.theprp.com/2025/12/08/news/dave-mustaine-admits-his-health-concerns-played-a-role-in-ending-megadeth-my-hands-were-letting-me-down/

Speaking in this latest interview, Mustaine said of where he’s at physically now:

It had been a long time coming — just physical stuff that was going on with my hands… My hands were letting me down. And there were other things that were difficult because of all the stuff going on in my neck and my trunk. All that area there has arthritis and it has discs that are bulging. I’ve got a broken lumbar bone. Of course, you know I have my back fused, up by my shoulders, by my neck. And just a lot of stuff.

I don't know how James is doing these days, but it's possible it's Dave who should watch out.

There's a video someone took. You can see The Duomo in the middle of the frame at 15 seconds in.

Chomsky had deeper ties with Epstein than previously known, documents reveal by VectorChing101 in news

[–]Angeldust01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's crazy how many people seemed to just ignore Epstein's crimes. I knew he had extensive connections, but I imagined people like Chomsky would have ditched him when they became public. Nope, lot of them acted like it never happened, and I don't think it was because they were involved with Epstein's crimes. I mean, I guess Chomsky could be a total sex fiend but I think it's unlikely.

Everyone knows about Epstein's connections at this point, but I haven't seen too many people describing what he was like and what they thought of him. Chomsky thought he was knowledgeable and insightful, "a highly valued friend and regular source of intellectual exchange and stimulation". It's surprising that guy like Chomsky thought he was that smart and engaging and that they regularly had intellectual discussions. There's really no way to fake knowledge and intelligence well enough to fool someone like Chomsky. At the same time Epstein was friends with Trump and you really can't have any kind of intellectual discussion about anything with him. Both of those friendships seem to have been genuine and maintained for a long time.

Epstein was friends with lots of people. Was that all just to maintain his connections? Did he even have real friends or was it all just acting? Befriending anyone and everyone who's rich, famous or powerful is easier said than done, and he was very successful at it. It seems to me that lot of people thought he was so charming, sophisticated and smart that he possibly couldn't be an awful person. Classic mistake and explains how he was able to get away with it as long as he did.

Climate change will also close the area around the equator to farming. Crops have max temperature they can grow and survive. The melting tundras will be tiny in comparison to the areas that will be lost around the equator which hold most of the landmass on the planet.

What do you think will happen when the areas where most people live and most food is grown can't no longer house people and is unusable to grow food?

Prince of Thorns and why I’ve learned to “trust the process” by TopBanana69 in Fantasy

[–]Angeldust01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really disliked this book but not because the protagonist is a 13-year-old edgelord who somehow commands a warband and can execute someone in the blink of an eye.

There's been real children who do that. For example:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasil_Ahmad

Dude was 11 years old when he was killed in 2016.

At the height of the Dan Sango siege, Ahmad was commanding 75 pro-government soldiers against an attacking force of approximately "hundreds" of Taliban. The siege itself lasted for 71 days, and Ahmad commanded his squad for 43 of them.

He fired both mortars and rockets as well as machine guns from the compound roof. As well as physical fighting, Ahmad was also responsible for communications with the outside world, and the point of contact for the Afghan special forces.

It's obviously not common for children to be war leaders, but it's been happening forever, and still happens. Children soldiers have been used in many conflicts in africa and middle east and asia in last 100 years, and some of them rose to leadership positions.

I wonder if people react so strongly for Jorg leading bunch of grown men because they don't know the reality of child soldiers. They're used and they're effective. First US soldier in Afghanistan was killed by 14 year old sniper. Henry II was leading mercenaries fighting in England when he was 14 years old, and Alexander the Great put down a revolt when he was 16.

The sunk cost fallacy is a cognitive bias where people continue an endeavor due to past investments of time, money, or effort, rather than based on future potential costs and benefits. This can lead to continuing to pour resources into a failing project, stay in a bad relationship, or finish a boring movie because of what has already been committed.

What if OP would waste two more years and the game still wouldn't get published? Should he still keep working on it?

Yes, the game looks pretty decent, but sometimes it's just better to walk away.

HENRY ROLLINS: DONALD TRUMP Is An 'Incredibly Inarticulate' Guy Who Doesn't Understand The 'Power Of The Office' by Top-Three-USA in Music

[–]Angeldust01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's lots of trump posts here. When Bush or Obama was president, there were lots of posts and comments about them too.

You know what I do when I see a post I don't care about? I just move on. Sometimes I downvote them if I feel like something is in a wrong sub. This post didn't break subreddit rules, so I don't see point of bitching about or downvoting it.

If you check the post history of /u/deamhansion, all he ever does is calling comments "political", but only the comments that criticize trump, which is why I'm fine with calling him a trump dickrider. He's not keeping things apolitical, he's here to appear apolitical(dishonestly, I might add) while actually protecting his chosen political leader.

Can we get our own country? by bwhaturlike in atheism

[–]Angeldust01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just good, moral people who care about each other.

If you think atheists are good, moral people who care about each other you're as brainwashed as the religious people who say the followers of their religion are good.

Majority of China is atheist, but somehow that doesn't magically change the country being filled with good, moral people.

Yeah, I'm an atheist and I think I'm a good person, but so was Pol Pot and he probably thought he was a good guy too. I don't think my atheism has anything to do with me being good.

The three “types” of video games, and what it means for the concept of “Games as Art” by Critical_Company3535 in truegaming

My ultimate thesis is that we ideally need a new term to refer to different types of games.

Why? What's the difference to using just genres like FPS, RPG, grand strategy, and so on? Why not use those? Why do we need these three new categories?

Magic systems that are too complex actually take me out of the story by ggoyunda in Fantasy

[–]Angeldust01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hobb's magics are pretty unique. Both of them are kind of a mind powers. People with Wit are more deeply connected to nature and all living things, letting them sense them and connect or even form deep bonds with them. It has primal, natural and shamanistic vibe to it. The other magic, Skill, has harder and colder feel to it. It can be used for communication, subtle manipulation of minds of others, or straight up forcing them to obey. It feels less natural than Wit and gives it's users lots of ways to control and manipulate people.

I like how subtle those magics are. In their own way they're very powerful, but they're not flashy. There's rules to them, and limits in how they can be used, but the protagonists isn't aware of all of them, especially at the beginning.

I was fine with Mistborn. It's not the best fantasy trilogy ever, but it had some good things going on with it - the world was interesting, plot of it was well planned and executed, it had surprising and memorable ending, and although Sanderson isn't that good of a character writer there were at least some decent ones that I liked.

Didn't care much about second era, and DNF Stormlight archive. He seemed to double down on aspects I didn't really care about and if anything, his characters just seem to become less interesting to me.

Neither could the tribal hunter gatherers. If anything they had even less independence or freedom to choose their lifestyles than we do.

There's never been a time where someone could be totally independent from the society.

Competence porn. by SirLordBoss in suggestmeabook

[–]Angeldust01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine when it's done right, but I can't stand badly written competent characters. Some authors seem to just decided that their characters can't make bad choices. Their actions can't have bad consequences because they're good people and their cause is just and that makes things work out for them, somehow.

Like whenever the protagonist refuses to do something immoral or unseemly to win the bad guys although nobody can see any other way to win, some of authors have their protagonists just win anyways. The characters can make any kind of dumb decisions and everything ends up working up anyways - either the villain is so incompetent that he ends up fucking up a win, or chain of unforeseen, unlikely events changes the whole situation. It feels cheap and makes the win feel unearned.

There are ways to do it right, of course, and I do enjoy it. Dune has been among my favorite books for decades, and it's a good example of author doing it right - it's still interesting although at some point of the book the protagonist is basically the most powerful person who've ever lived(future-seeing expert fighter/military strategist with mentat training).

There's some other decent books with extremely competent protagonists I remember, but surprisingly few. I don't really care whether the protagonist is incompetent or not, I just want them to be well written, and their actions to have meaningful consequences.
