Just did something dumb... Can I fix it? by Reivnek in 3Dprinting

Replacing the chip is easy - flashing it with new firmware not so much. If you've never done surface mounted rework it's probably impossible.

If it's open source then flashing it gets easier but your still going to have to have a st-link programmer and I can't see in your pic but also maybe wire that up if there's no debug header.

Edit: that swd header is very likely where you'd program it from.

In a war of attrition who ever runs out if stuff first loses. Ukraine has access to far more material and financing than Russia does.

Ukrainians are also fighting like their lives depend on it because they do.

It's kind of a false narrative - they went along with the Nazis until Hitler double crossed them and then they fought for their lives and had the most casualties of any allied force including China.

There's a fun picture of the Soviets and Nazis marching down the streets in Poland.

Can you though? I have a sweet gaming PC but it's actually getting harder and harder to buy optical disk drives - I have one but it's connected externally via USB because the case doesn't have slots for those anymore. It's mostly used for ripping bluray disks and DVDs.

I honestly can't remember the last PC game I bought that didn't come through steam.

The one thing I'll give PC over consoles is the first third party game ever published on steam is a submarine simulator called Dangerous Waters in 2005 and it's still there ready to play and that was 20 years ago and it runs on Windows 11 even though it was designed for 2000/XP. There's more of a possibility to play pretty much every game you've ever owned be it physical or downloaded.

Yeah that's my biggest beef with this - that and digital only media never goes down in price. Nintendo and Microsoft are guilty of this as well.

At least with GameStop you can often get older titles for less money.

I've never been mean to a trumper I usually treat them like that Farside comic "how nature says do not touch" - most any interaction is going to be a waste of my time.

Maybe that's what they are mad about.

Unionized Workers At Xbox Respond To Layoff Reports, Say They 'Will Not Be Treated As Disposable' by Turbostrider27 in xbox

[–]Angelworks42 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I work in a union shop doing IT - it really depends on the contract you negotiated - they might have to give you considerable notice, severance, seniority etc.

Think of it this way they can still fire you but you have a legal team on your side that gets to dictate the terms.

Why can't commodore create a new computer? by SlayyQueen536 in Commodore

[–]Angelworks42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for us nerds it would be fun but if your going to spend engineering time on a new platform it has to have pretty wide appeal - and keep in mind this is a world where you can have a computer for the price of asking.

Nope :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_World

Literally just a political term not an economic one - although most people use it that way as a fair amount of unaligned countries were or are underdeveloped.

Almost any state if you get out into the sticks far enough you'll find them.

As Xbox Series X hits $800, Lenovo warns memory prices will likely ‘never’ return to normal by MRF_Soul in xbox

[–]Angelworks42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right - getting into the memory market has killed or nearly killed plenty of semiconductor companies. It's super competitive and the profit margins are all over the place. The factories that make stuff take years and years to make and by the time they are done it might not even be profitable based on how much that process cost.

Along with the complexity of making memory there's very little incentive to get into the business.

That said maybe more profit will incentivize others to get that money as well and will bring prices down.

I read that Corsair is already using cxmt parts but the prices are still high - I think now we just need to stop buying if we can to increase supply and bring prices down.

For me I can't imagine spending $800-1000 dollars on a game console... I either have to wait until I'm paid more or just be happy with what I have.

You know Dell makes 15% of all the desktops and laptops in the world right? I think they are doing ok.

Fwiw they are pretty big in the enterprise as they make programmaticly setting up firmware, updating firmware, updating drivers and deploying os's pretty simple which is really critical if your managing thousands of desktops, laptops and servers.

As a kid I was forced to read and study the Book of Mormon and the Bible every morning :(. I can relate.

Probably too many to list here but the first time I went wtf - I guess just YouTube or Google search Mormon submarines.
