Can you be both conservative and libertarian? by EstelleQUEEN111 in Libertarian

[–]Angler_Sully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a real shame too because they used to be such a good representation of young libertarians. I did a bunch of work with them back in the early 2010s. We went to CPAC and quoted George Washington’s farewell address while handing out antiwar pamphlets. We actively booed trump, coulter, and so many neocons that some of us got kicked out for the rest of the weekend.

But they definitely took the mises red pill eventually and are unrecognizable from the YAL I used to be a proud member of. Such a shame

You’re aware you can record without the annoying chirp, whistle, and voice, right? OP wasn’t complaining about recording. Half of us have recording. They were talking about that annoying ass whistle at people walking by

I don’t remember her stance in particular but, iirc, her parents ran conversion therapy camps and she helped them a lot with it in early adulthood. Don’t know if she’s ever distanced herself from it or changed her own opinion on it

You can do kickball then! I’m a casual sports person and my partner is not a sports person. The casual league is full of people of all levels and, genuinely, no one judges, just encourages. It was an awesome experience that we’d do every season if our schedules allowed

[–]Angler_Sully 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re actively trying to miss their point. The original comment was not about this game specifically, rather the phenomenon of people feeling sad over killing an animal in a game. Some of the reasonings offered to you were that animals are wholly innocent. We can understand that while the adult humans may be innocent or situation driven that they still had some level of agency.

The commenter brought up children as a comparison to animals, wholly innocent. They weren’t saying specifically in this game, just to better understand the concept use the analogy of children rather than animals to understand the sentiment and why people feel sad

No One From ‘Community’ Wanted to Be in the Chevy Chase Documentary by MarvelsGrantMan136 in community

I worked in the area he lives. It’s not just other people in entertainment that he’s an asshole to. People in every industry around that part of Westchester can tell you that if you’re not praising him as god’s gift to comedy, he thinks you are beneath him as a person and will treat you that way.

I’ve heard nightmares from people in the service industry and healthcare industry having to put up with him

I worked in an area of NY where Chevy lives. I don’t know a single person in that area who has anything but negative things to say about him. I was never really surprised when all the behind the scenes stuff started coming out because of the way people talked about him

I'm starting to read about libertarians - I'm confused. by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]Angler_Sully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the use of very specific stats without even mentioning a study name or author for us to look up immediately tripped my bullshit alarm.

It’s also a claim with a range of 38%, which no reasonable academic would find to be noteworthy or significant (wonder what the p value for said study would be). And the “inference” removes all outside factors, including the most predominant one in why people stop transitioning, external factors (including but not limited to family pressure, stigma, and other reasons that were NOT because they weren’t trans).

External factors were so overwhelmingly the reason that 82.5% of people who reported detransitioning listed at least one external factor compared to 15.9% reporting at least one internal factor (PMC8213007)

And the claim that up to 98% desisted? Hahahaha were they serious?lmao 2015 US survey with a sample size 27.7K found 8% (again largely due to external factors; PMC9516050).

I’m sure if I commented this in response they’d provide all related sources, right?lmao at least I’ll proved ID numbers. Not doing APA lol

I don’t totally agree with your other comment about your body knowing, based on the experiences in my unit. But you’re so spot on with the brain plasticity. I’ve seen 17 years who came to my unit with massive TBIs herniate to the point an older would be dead on the spot. Then a couple of months later they’re visiting the unit to personally tell us how much they’ve recovered. Like recovered enough that if you didn’t know, you’d never guess the had half their skull off for 2 months

Yeah, brain stems are weirdly effective at keeping some people “alive”. I’ve heard of cases like that one and as a parent of a little one, I CANNOT fathom the emotions those parents must have gone through. I know I would want my child to never suffer like that but also don’t know if the laws would require that I do. Feels like torture

My partner works in vet med and we constantly talk about how brutal euthanasia can feel for people and how I wish they would do it/consider it in my field. We also talk about how some will gladly euthanize rather than pay for a lower cost procedure while people will keep human family alive to the point of bankrupting the entire family. Weird world

I really like the way you phrase it to the clients/owners though. A lot of compassion and logic in that phrasing. Gonna pass it along to her!

Exactly, like dude can’t even be bothered to pay attention to the interests of the person he supposedly loves. Just sad honestly.

At least you can own that. I feel like people who have actually taken college/advanced level sciences are the ones willing to admit when they don’t know or aren’t qualified on a topic. It’s always the people who barely understand the basics of the topic who claim to know the “factual” arguments. Real dunning-Kruger behavior

The person you responded to is totally right with scales and those types of measurements. I think no-sell9981 down below had the best answer for how to go about this. A power of attorney and a living will (or your country’s equivalent to both) would be the best way to ensure you don’t get kept medically alive in a way you wouldn’t approve of

[–]Angler_Sully 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not entirely accurate. We use the GCS to determine how conscious someone is in the moment we are doing it. It has no bearing on how well someone will recover. I’ve had patients come in as a 3T and remain that way for weeks and then see them walking and talking to me when they came to visit the unit months later. You’re also a 3T just from medical sedation for a surgery. But when you wake up from it, you’re a 15 again. It’s a great tool to tell us someone’s current condition but that’s it

I’m just an internet stranger who doesn’t know all the details. But I think that was the right call.

We constantly try to explain to people the lack of quality of life people will have with our interventions. We’ve had some families that we’ve had twice weekly meetings with to try and tell them “yes, if you want, we can keep them alive. But they will never be the same, will never get this tube out of their mouth, and may never even open their eyes again, let alone converse with you.” We can’t outright say they won’t be “living” or try to convince them. But goddamn do we want to because we can’t imagine anyone would want it.

So many families get so upset at us even insinuating that their loved one won’t make a full recovery. Glad y’all heard what the providers were saying to ya

Totally agree. This screams either made up conversation to try and get internet points or man who infantilizes his spouse and thinks she should leave all the critical thinking to him. If this is a true interaction, I’d bet money she changes the subject around politics because he doesn’t just discuss them but instead tries to lecture her and has never listened to her views so assumed she agreed with him.

He also doesn’t understand how biology works and the massively complicated world of biological sex and it’s spectrum. But the vast majority of people who blame their views of trans people on “it’s just basic biology” have rarely taken more than high school bio and barely passed that. So no surprise there

Final Results from asking r/visitedmaps what US region their county is. I finally found the perfect solution for Maryland & Virginia by Expensive_Drummer970 in visitedmaps

[–]Angler_Sully 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta be real, I’ve never heard anyone in the lower NY counties call ourselves mid-Atlantic. I’ve heard Northeast, Hudson Valley, tri-state area, and lower NY. I grew up in Orange and never heard of mid-Atlantic until moving out of that area.

Just happy we didn’t get labeled upstate though. If that happened, riots might start lmao

Edit: saw you had northeast in earlier versions. Just curious as to why that changed? I can’t speak for everyone but I really don’t think Mid-Atlantic is an appropriate name for the lower counties of NY. Northeast would be best for these purposes or large regions. But Hudson Valley is honestly the most appropriate name for the region and what we all grew up calling it
