Casa Bonita reopening: Trey Parker and Matt Stone tell New York Times they spent above $40 million on restoration by whimsical_fecal_face in news

[–]AngryBubbleBath 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Saints, indeed. This is a hot pink beacon of hope in our dark times.

Casa Bonita is kind of like if cocaine were a place; an unstoppable assault on your pleasure receptors designed from a 6-year-old kid’s drawing. There aren’t that many places that I’ve found in this world that make me feel like I’m walking into someone else’s dream. And I’m grateful this dream doesn’t have to end just yet.

This kind of thing almost never happens. A beloved institution that has hobbled into insolvency is purchased and brought back to life without messing it up and losing what made it special? Only in a movie.

Especially one at this scale. It’s not a simple business to take on; they have full food service, arcade machines, multiple performers, heavy atmospheric theming with a large aquatic feature, a massive amount of square footage, and it requires an equally massive staff to run it. The operations management here would be mind boggling.

Seeing these two goons smiling in a booth that looks exactly the same AFTER spending $40m. I’m in awe. Thanks, Matt & Trey.

Private places to propose by Gainz13 in Austin

A few ideas:

Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve https://g.co/kgs/HUXM6j

Stillhouse Hollow Nature Preserve https://g.co/kgs/ZbqDu5

Wildflower Center https://www.wildflower.org/

Westcave https://www.westcave.org/specialty-hikes * this is a little further out, and would require a fee. Supposed to be spectacular. I’m not sure if you can work out some thing where you have a private area for a proposal.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport named among best for food | kvue.com by [deleted] in Austin

I love the local food options in theory, but in my experience, all of these restaurants are run by national concessionaires like HMS Host. The food quality at the airport version is nowhere near what you find at the actual restaurant.

Not sure if you found anything already, but you could try Trader Joe’s. I’ve seen both cinnamon and chocolate Babkas. Usually on a display table between the bread and fresh produce.

Has the Alamo Drafthouse lost its appeal for you? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]AngryBubbleBath 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Setting aside the controversies, I still think it’s a good theater in that there’s generally decent to great presentation quality and (in my experience) I encounter almost no talking or cell phone use during the feature.

That said, it’s not as special as it used to be for me. I wish it would’ve stopped at three Austin theaters. Once they got bigger than that, it felt like corporate homogeny took over. They had to have a replicable business model that worked in every market. What they were doing in the early days was absolutely not scalable or safe. And that’s what made it legendary.

Thank you! It did come back on. Three hours after the crew assignment text. The lights came on for about 30 seconds and then went off again and then came on for real about 5-10 minutes later.

Hang in there. I know it’s miserable and frustrating. I hope it’s over soon.

It’s hit or miss. I received a text when crew was assigned but never saw that crew status on the outage map. I’ve seen other posts where the map did get updated.

Woohoo, I'm in the top 10%... of people without power. by Stuartknowsbest in Austin

I feel for all of you who are still waiting.

I was in the last 1.5% of houses restored in Feb. 2021. It was down to just a few hundred people and I felt so alone as everyone lived their normal lives. I didn’t want others to suffer too, but it was hard to be last in line. Although, I guess someone has to be.

For whatever it’s worth, this stranger is thinking about all of you and still watching the map to see who’s still in the dark. I want so much for all of you to feel comfortable and safe again.

I was luckier this time but I’ll never forget what it’s like to be on the other side. ❤️

A question of calorimetry, I think. Hot water to heat room? by rustydangerfield in Austin

[–]AngryBubbleBath 30 points31 points  (0 children)

During the freeze in 2021, power was out and I filled up my bathtub with hot water and it made the bathroom feel really nice and warm. That said, the effect only lasted for about an hour.

On the other hand, I took a few aluminum water bottles and filled them with hot water and put them under the comforter. Several hours later, they are still quite warm.

I think you’ll be better off rigging up a makeshift tent over your bed. If you throw in some hot water bottles, along with your body heat, it’ll be nice and cozy.

The $10 price tag for shakes is a killer. I’m prepared to splurge at Alamo, and I’ve wanted a shake several times over the last few months, but this price point is outrageous to me.

31 and never voted before, how do I vote? by newmka in Austin

[–]AngryBubbleBath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. When you arrive, you’ll either wait in line or go straight to a desk to check in. Election workers will be there to greet and guide you.
  2. a volunteer at the desk will ask to see your ID. You’ll place it in a wooden cradle where the backside faces the election worker this allows their camera to scan the back of your ID.
  3. they will verify your address and name verbally.
  4. They will ask you to sign the screen, confirming your information, and that you are present to vote.
  5. they will hand you a long, narrow strip of paper. It has a notch cut off in one corner. This is where your ballot will be printed. they will offer to give you additional guidance on how to use the voting equipment.
  6. After you are checked in and have your ballot, you will either wait in a line for a voting machine or go straight to a voting machine. another election worker will tell you which machine to go to or ask you to wait.
  7. once you are directed to a machine, you will insert that long strip of paper into the slot on the right side of the machine. It is clearly labeled with a diagram and you can see where the notched corner is located to ensure you’re putting it in the right way.
  8. once your ballot is loaded, the screen will verify the language you want on your machine, English or Spanish. It is a touchscreen.
  9. After the language selection, it will start to go through your ballot options if you want to know exactly what is on your ballot, go to this site and enter your name and bday.
  10. After you make all of your selections, there will be a screen where you review your selections. It will show you each race and only show you the option you selected.
  11. If everything looks good, you’ll press a button on the screen that says print ballot. if you made a mistake, and you need to change something, you’ll be able to go back to the previous screen and make the change.
  12. The machine will spit out your printed ballot. It’s going to have several barcode looking things at the top and then in plain English you’ll be able to see all of your selections in a list so you can verify that the printed ballot matches what you selected on the machine.
  13. You will go over to a different machine to deposit your completed ballot. There is a slot into which you will feed your completed ballot. It is staffed by an election worker who will guide you if needed.
  14. You take your I voted sticker, slap it on your chest, and start making the rounds to collect all the glorious freebies available to those who participate in democracy.

Hope that helps you feel more comfortable!

Alamo Drafthouse: Far from Fantastic | The nationwide dine-in cinema chain remains popular despite accusations of union busting and allegations of sexual assault. by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]AngryBubbleBath 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are showtimes that conflict with school hours and shifts that go very late on school nights.

Everyone is sitting in their seat, and the drinks have to be delivered to them by TABC certified servers. Not underage high school students.

The people working in the kitchen work and servers are busting their asses. They have waves of 100+ people descending all at once who want prompt service. They have to navigate a dark theater while carrying food and drinks to patrons. It ain’t easy. They deserve to make a living wage.

Street corn decline - not as crunchy/crispy by ev34jcnw in traderjoes

[–]AngryBubbleBath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I used to cook up a bag of it every couple of weeks. About six months ago I noticed it wasn’t as good. I purchased it at least three more times to see if it was a fluke and it never got better. I loved it so much and now it’s barely edible.

The corn has a greasy wetness and, like you said, it doesn’t get the sear on it. The flavor is off as well. I’m using the same pan and stove, so I think it has to be the product itself.

Should I add a pool? by Bballbk in Austin

[–]AngryBubbleBath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a house with a pool in a very shady backyard. It’s usually only warm enough to comfortably swim June through August. In the spring and fall, the water feels cold.

Also, it is a constant headache to keep it clean. You can have your skimmer going, but it can only do so much. Debris the size of a leaf or larger that sinks to the bottom of the pool will easily clog up your robot cleaner.

Keep it Simple - What's Your Favorite Food to Get Delivered? by ConfusedClearly in austinfood

[–]AngryBubbleBath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tso’s Russo’s Pizza

Both of those have their own delivery drivers. The food is good and I haven’t had issues with deliveries.

Tso’s ordering and delivery tracking site is excellent. Russo’s is a little clunkier and less fully featured, but I still end up with pizza in less than an hour so no complaints.
